Can You See A Five Thousand Dollar Diamond Difference?

Got an Extra $5,000?

We had a Customer in the other day, who was comparing Diamonds and Shopping for an Engagement Ring.

He had gone to Jareds, and was looking at a 1.25 Carat, SI2 Clarity, E Color Round Diamond selling for $10,800.

(Similar to this Stone)

He wanted to see what we had in 1.25 Carat Diamonds.

We had a few (Big Stones over 1.00 are not readily available in Stores).

Our Stone was Lower in Color, but Higher in Clarity. Not to mention the Fact that ours was Slightly Bigger in Carat Weight too.

Ours was a 1.28, SI1 Clarity, J Color

(Similar to this Stone Here)

So the Quality was Very Close. Jared’s Diamond was a Tolkowsky Cut (Supposed to be Ideal), but it Wasn’t Certified.

Ours WAS Certified by GIA, and also had Very Good Polish and Symmetry!

Our Stone was selling for $5,800 (A STEAL)!

But the Color!?!

The Customer was really Stuck on the Fact that the Jared’s Diamond was E Color (And I would be too – That’s my Favorite Color).

But our Diamond LOOKED Great!

It had Beautiful Sparkle and was HUGE!

The Customer kept pushing E Color. He really liked that.

So I asked him point blank:

Do you see a $5,000 Difference?

(Look at these Two Diamonds as an Example)

Can You See A Five Thousand Dollar Diamond Difference?

And the Customer looked at the Stone, looked at me, looked back at the Stone and said:

“Nope! Not Really!”

It made him really Think Hard about the Price. Maybe their Stone does Appear Better (but it wouldn’t under a Microscope or a 10x Jeweler’s Loupe). Ours was Cleaner, theirs had Better Color. Theirs also had a Better Cut, but ours is GIA Certified (Worth Every Penny).

And Side by Side, like the Two Diamonds shown above, SURE, one looks Slightly Better (It Should for 11 Grand). But the Diamonds are also Magnified at 10x. So you should see a Difference here. Once it’s Mounted on a Ring on your Finger, you think you’d know the Difference? Probably NOT!

But your Pocketbook WILL

You’ll see a BIG Difference in the Price.

Does it look Better? YES! But does it look DOUBLE the PRICE Better?

NO!

$5,000 is a Lot of Green Backs!

Especially if you can’t see that Big of a Variance.

$5,000 can Pay for the Honeymoon!!!!

In the long run, you really have to Justify the Purchase and decide if a Rock is Worth the Money.

For Him, it Wasn’t!

He Bought our Stone!

5 G’s is 5 G’s!

And I’d rather keep my Money in the Bank

Or go to Maui!

What about you?

Would you Spend Double, or Spend the Extra $5,000 on something else?

Let me know below…

Cheers! :)

  1. Absolutely NOT! I would have to think long and hard ~ about 5 seconds worth of “long and hard” – before spending $5,000 more for one stone like Jared’s over the stone you carried!
Like you said, once either or both of them are mounted in a gorgeous setting and then on a finger, I would much rather take *my* 1.28 ct ring, (and the spectacular wedding rings we could also now more easily afford), my new husband and myself on a Hawaiian honeymoon! And STILL not spend it all!
The right mountings ~ perhaps an interlocking set, or a classic baguette side stone set, that would add even more “WOW factor” to the center stone ~ and will downplay the color issue in a heartbeat. Besides, sometimes a little “good” color in a stone makes it put out even more rainbows and sparkles!
