Are You Paying Twice As Much For A Diamond Engagement Ring?

Did you know, that the average consumer pays twice as much as they should for a Diamond Engagement Ring?

TWICE!!!?

That’s a crazy statistic, just think of what you could do with all that extra money.

It’s a sad reality, but it’s true.

Granted spending TWICE as much may be an exception to the rule, but trust me, you will find that most people do spend hundreds and thousands of dollars more than they should!

So why do people over pay for Diamond Engagement Rings?

It almost doesn’t make sense. They buy it. They wear it. They spend too much.

And it’s all because of a couple of simple reasons:

  • They fell in love with the ring
  • They don’t shop and compare
  • They don’t wait for a discount
  • They finance it for payments
  • They don’t know any better

So now, let’s take a closer look…

They fell in love with the ring

Chances are, if you take your girlfriend shopping for a Diamond Engagement Ring, she’s going to fall in love with one.

And, no matter what else she looks at, no matter what the quality is, or the price is, no other ring will do.

It’s her “Dream Ring” and that’s the one she wants.

So even if a similar ring down the street sells for half the price, it doesn’t matter. She’s in love with that ring and she’s batting those baby blue eyes at you.

Aww shucks! It’s only $7,000 more, right?

They don’t shop and compare

Say you bought her a One Carat Diamond Ring. VVS1, E, for $17,799.99 (No Longer Available). Congrats!

Kay Jewelers One Carat Loose Certified Diamond

But did you know that if you looked hard enough and compared online you probably could have saved thousands?

Compare these two stones below…

STORE, CW, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, CERTIFIED PRICE VIEW
Kays, 1.01, VVS1, E, VERY GOOD, GIA $17,799 VIEW
JA, 1.00, VVS1, E, VERY GOOD, GIA $10,770 VIEW

One Diamond Ring is from Kay Jewelers, the other is from James Allen.

Kay’s ring is not only more expensive, but also a little bit lower in quality (Symmetry). The good thing is, they are both certified by GIA (the BEST in the business).

James Allen One Carat Loose Certified Diamond

So would you have spent more and gotten less?

It happens every day!!!

So before you purchase… STOP!

Shop around and compare quality and prices. You’ll be surprised at the differences you’ll find. It may take some more legwork, but in the long run, you’ll be much more happy.

And so will your pocketbook.

They don’t wait for a discount

The big key to saving money on a Diamond Ring is to plan in advance.

Rushing into things is a surefire way to over pay and get yourself over budget.

The best times of the year to shop for Diamonds is during Christmas Time, Bridal Season (Spring Time), and even Special Events like Bridal Shows, Clearance Sales, or even Red Tag Events…

So check the Jeweler’s Websites, and look for Discounts or upcoming Deals.

Use Trade-ins if you have any.

Pick up my copy of 101 Ways to Save Money on Diamonds.

And even deal directly with the manager or boss.

The point is, just about every ring, at some time, will be discounted or reduced. So if you don’t need an “emergency ring” or a frantic wedding, then relax and wait for the savings bus to arrive.

They finance it for payments

The ring may be a bit more, or a lot more, but, if the store is willing to finance you (at insane interest rates and keep your payments low and affordable) then why not do it?

You’d be amazed at how many people think this way.

They’re buying payments.

Some people may have to, but I’d suggest you think twice. Because you’ll not only pay way more, but you’ll pay double the amount in the future because of Interest, Fees, and Penalties.

Ouch!

Paying with cash is always a better option.

Plus, if you pay with cash you’ll probably get the item cheaper, because cash is a great bargaining tool. Not to mention the fact that the ring will be paid off so you won’t have to pay for it over the course of the next four years…

I also suggest lay-a-way if you can.

Layaways are interest free and you can still have a low monthly payments, if that’s what you choose.

Or, look at putting it on a low interest-bearing credit card, or even getting a loan from your credit union. Something that’s not as crazy as a Jewelry Store Finance Plan. And one that could also give you Cash Back, Rewards, or even Frequent Flyer Miles.

It all adds up.

They don’t know any better

A lot of guys keep away from Jewelry Stores. It’s not their area of expertise.

The Jewelry Store is way too Expensive, Technical, and Intimidating! Guys feel like they’re being taken, and they don’t know where to begin.

But that’s why there are websites like mine. Websites that can teach you about Diamonds, Certification, the 4C’s, Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.

You don’t need to learn it all, in fact you don’t need to learn that much to buy a great looking Diamond.

For example, check out these awesome posts of mine to help you get started…

Or, you could do yourself one better, and purchase my Diamond Crash Course e-book. That’s a great way to learn the bare minimum, and trust me, if you’re spending $8,000 on a Diamond Engagement Ring, you need at least that much. I highly recommend it!

Because walking blindly into a Diamond purchase, with no knowledge of how Diamonds are priced, and why some Diamonds are doubled the price… Can really bite you in the butt.

So be Prepared!!!

You are only going to buy one Engagement Ring your whole life (okay, for some of you, three or four…). And you wouldn’t spend that kind of money on anything else without checking it out thoroughly and doing your homework…

Are you Paying Twice as Much for a Diamond Engagement Ring?

So don’t do it with Diamonds!

Otherwise, you too may become a statistic, or you could pay twice as much as you should. And believe me, even though the examples in this post aren’t exactly DOUBLE (close though), you WILL find Stores and Diamonds and Rings that are!

It’s almost mind-blowing!

Shop around, you’ll see…
