Find The Diamond Inclusions

When I’m looking at Certified Diamonds (which is Daily), I like to Play a Game I call:

“Find the Inclusions!”

I do this out of Pure Joy of Diamonds, and I use it Greatly in Training Exercises for New Employees… It Works Wonders! Seeing Really IS Believing! (For one can HEAR about “Clarity“, and look at a Diamond Clarity Chart forever – as you’ll find many Jewelry Stores have – but until you actually SEE the REAL Flaws, it never really CLICKS!)

Find the Inclusions” means this: I Look at a Diamond Plot on a Diamond Report, A.K.A. Certificate (Most Certified Diamonds of Larger Carat Weights have these, as shown below…), and I FIND THE FLAWS!

Diamond Plot On GIA Diamond Report

LOL, not that the Flawless Diamond above has any, but SOON you will see a LOT! :)

I Microscope these Diamonds (Using 10x Magnification), and try to see if I can Locate Every Single Inclusion, Blemish and Flaw listed on the Report.

You’d think it would be easy, especially since you’re viewing the Diamond at the Magnification that they were Graded with.

BUT IT’S NOT!

In fact, most Inclusions in a Diamond like to hide. You can’t find them. Why? Because of many reasons. Here are a few:

  • Sparkle and Brilliance are Masking them
  • They fall Above or Below the Focus Area
  • They are Hidden Underneath the Facets
  • Their Color Blends in with the Stone

And there are plenty more reasons (like the Reflection is Obscuring them), but you get my point. They Disappear! (Unless they’re really Big, Black, and Obnoxious!)

Some Inclusions are just Wisps, Faint Lines, Pin Points, Soft White Feathers… Things that only a Trained Expert can see.

So when you look at a Diamond Plot and see Tons of Red and Green Markings (Red for Internal Inclusions – and Green for Blemishes, or External Flaws on the Surface of the Stone) and think the Stone is Crap, CALM DOWN…

Chances are, you’ll probably only be able to spot HALF of them!

Really!

To Prove this Theory, I’m going to show you 6 Diamonds and their Plots (Redrawn by me from the Real GIA Reports so they weren’t Small or Blurry).

Look at the Stones and see if you can FIND THEM ALL.

I Guarantee you, it will be Tricky!

Here are the Diamonds and their Lovely little Fingerprint-Blueprint Plots

Find The Inclusions In The Diamond Plot

Okay, WAIT!

Before I go on any further, I’ll Stop and Say…

THE PLOT DOESN’T LINE UP!

And what I mean by that, is the Diamond or the Plot is not in the Same Position as each other (think of it like a Clock, does the 2 o’Clock Diamond Flaws Match up with the 2 o’Clock Flaws on the Plot?), which makes Finding the Flaws IMPOSSIBLE!

Plus, Not all the Flaws are Drawn on the Plot either… Some are so Small and Abundant that Drawing out Every Single One is Futile!)

Once you Microscope a Diamond (or if you’re Advanced, you can use a 10x Jewelers Loupe), you’ll have to Rotate the Plot until it lines up with the Exact Inclusions inside the Stone. That will make everything much Easier to see and verify

P.S. Underneath the Diamond Plots on a Diamond Certificate you’ll see the KEY TO SYMBOLS which tells you what Each Type of Flaw in the Stone is Called (Feathers, Crystals, Clouds, Needles…) SWEET! :) Take a look…

Diamond Plots And Symbols

And, if you’re really CURIOUS, take a look at ALL of the Key To Symbols from GIA here…

Neat Stuff! :)

So let’s Rotate that Particular Diamond Plot as shown in the Previous Example above (as well as all the rest of them), and Start Over. You’ll see it really is much more Helpful! :)

VS2 E Round Diamond And Diamond Plot

SI2 H Round Diamond And Diamond Plot

SI1 K Round Diamond And Diamond Plot

SI1 J Round Diamond And Diamond Plot

Better eh?

But I’m sure that some Flaws were Easy to Find, others Weren’t!

One thing to note here is that Lower Clarity Diamonds, Like SI2, I1, I2, and I3, will have Bigger, more Obvious Flaws that will make it Easier to see them and Identify them (being able to Identify your Stone like this is also the BEST way to Prevent Diamond Switching!) When you get into Higher Clarity Diamonds (SI1 and Higher), the Flaws get so Small and Insignificant that it may Prove to be a Real Chore to find them.

And also, keep in mind that the Flaws that you see on a Diamond Report Plot are ALL of the Flaws that are in the Diamond (Flattened into a 2D Drawing of course). Some of these Flaws reside near the Crown, some near the Girdle, others at the Bottom of the Stone (the Pavilion). Some may only be Visible from the Side View! And others, you’re gonna LOVE this, others will actually DUPLICATE and Replicate themselves inside the Stone. One Flaw could look like 8 Flaws – like a Fun House Full of Mirrors… Crazy, right?

When you look at a Diamond Plot, you’ll notice that there are 2 Views: The Top AND Bottom View! You’ll see some Flaws are on one View that aren’t on the other. Take a look…

GIA Diamond Report Plot Top Bottom Views

So even under a Scope, unless you view the Diamond from all Sides, Angles, Up, Down, Tilting the Stone, and even Sideways, you won’t be able to Spot them. Plus, you’ll also have to keep Adjusting the Knobs and Focusing on different parts of the stone to find them. Tricky Tricky!

But, it still is Very Cool!

Customers LOVE it! Employees LOVE it! Everyone LOVES it! They’re so Beautiful and Breathtaking!

So the next time you’re in the Mall, or a Local Jewelry Store, Try it out. (Or Just go to James Allen and look at some Diamonds, Rotate them Around, and then look at the Diamond Certificates and the Plots if they have one… Depending on the Report Requested [by the Jeweler Paying for it], some Diamonds don’t have an Actual PLOT, but I Love it when they do!)

Ask the Jewelry Stores if you can View some Certified Diamonds, to see if you can “Find the Inclusions“.

You Will LOVE it!

It’s Fascinating, Fun, and Hey, who doesn’t like to Play with Diamonds? :)

Cheers! :)
