IF IT’S BIG, IT’S OBVIOUS!

THE BIGGER THE DIAMOND, THE MORE OBVIOUS EVERYTHING IS!

If The Diamond Is Big The Flaws Are Obvious

There’s truth to the phrase:

Bigger Diamonds get Bigger Flaws!

But in reality, the flaws don’t really get any bigger, they just become more obvious.

And this is because bigger diamonds have a bigger viewing area. It’s much easier to look into a big stone and see flaws.

Look at a half carat diamond, the flaws are small, hard to see, almost invisible

But look into a carat and up, and the flaws stand out like a sore thumb.

2 carats, 3 carats, 4…

You’ll see tons and tons of flaws.

It’s very normal in large stones (anything over 1 carat) to see huge eye-visible flaws. They just get so rare in nature that it’s a common sight to see. 75% of them will be “included“, which is I1, I2 and I3 clarity.

That’s just the way it goes.

Nature is not perfect.

And when you shop for big stones, almost all the jewelers will carry I quality stones. Most of this is just because of price.

Because even a 2+ carat, of I clarity is still a hefty price tag.

By carrying I clarity, at least they make the stone somewhat affordable.

To see what I mean, compare these two stones below. One diamond is an I1 clarity diamond, and the other is a VVS1

Big Diamonds Have Big Flaws And Darker Color

(See these two MASSIVE diamonds here: I1, G, and VVS1, G)

Crazy, eh?

With diamonds this large, not only is clarity more apparent, but so is color.

A J colored diamond will appear much more yellow than a 3/4 carat diamond.

So unless you spend an arm and a leg, you’ll probably end up getting an I clarity diamond with I color. That’s pretty much average quality in large diamonds.

And that quality is I, I…

As in “Aye, Aye Captain!

And yes, that’s also why we call them “Sailor” diamonds.

Cheers! :)

  1. That “Sailor diamond” needs to walk the plank! What a mess. And only an I-1 with all that “stuff” in there? I’d have to be awfully hard up for a big diamond to think that one was even “considerable” for lack of a better word! (I know – perfectly good word ruined by horrible syntax! Or is that “sin tax”? Because that diamond is a sin! LOL!!) Sorry – I guess I got a little lost in all the grammatical nonsense!
Whew! OK – I’m fine. Maybe it’s because it’s my birthday and I’m a little giddy! Back to the subject at hand. On hand? Oh geez…
That big monstrosity of a rock is just eeewww… I realize that we’re seeing everything enlarged 10X and therefore so much more “in your face” than it would be on someone’s hand, but really? How would you go about setting something like that to minimize its many flaws? In something with lots of prongs and a bunch of side stones to take some of the eye away from them? Seems like you’d need some kind of a distraction, but then doesn’t that really defeat the purpose of having a bigger stone to begin with? To have it, and then try to fool the eye into not looking at it?
That VS1 G stone sure is pretty, but then of course so is the price tag that comes with it! I’d put that in one of those European style solitaire mountings with the unusual flat contour on the underside, just to keep it from spinning around on my finger all day long. With a stone that big, and that gorgeous, I would not want a single thing to take away from it!!
Of course, with prices going astronomical for absolutely everything these days, you couldn’t get any kind of a house anywhere worth living in (at least not anywhere near civilization) for $40,000, and a decent new car or nice pickup these days will run you at least that much, so what’s a $40,000 diamond ring? Ehh – chicken feed! Yeahhhh…right! Actually, I’ll keep my ¼-ct SI1 G bit of sparkle in the illusion mounting, with the two 2 pointers on each side in the vertical box mount, between bead set 4-diamond cathedrals anyday! Doesn’t sound like much, but he bought the solitaire for me, and I designed and had the rest fabricated over a ten year period for different anniversaries, and it’s all mine, and it didn’t break the bank!

    • Yeah, when it comes to big stones, most of them will be filled with inclusions, at least the affordable ones. But, as we all know, there are some lovely I clarity stones to be found, so shopping around and comparing them is always advised. Oh, and Happy Birthday! :)
