Wearing Post Earrings - The Cure For Fat Earlobes

True story:

I was writing up a jewelry repair slip one day, when I had a customer quickly approach me. She says “I want to return these earrings!

She slams an earring box on the counter in front of me.

So right off the bat, I’m unsettled. I reply, “Can I ask you why you would like to return them?

Now I’m opening the box to look at her earrings that she wanted to return…

So she says,”Because my earlobes are too fat!

I exhaled slightly, smirked a little, then said looking up “Now really, how fat could your earlobes ___________

I stopped short.

She had the fattest earlobes I’ve ever seen.

She was right. They were the thickness of my pinky. There’s no way a normal earring post would ever make it through those puppies. I was shocked!

So what can you do with really thick lobes?

Most people would just give up on wearing earrings. But going without, is NOT the best solution.

In fact, the answer is quite simple. People don’t even know an option like this exists… But it does. You get the jeweler to make the earring post longer!

Really!!!

It only takes a day or two. They elongate the length of the post by adding more gold to the end. That way it’ll be long enough to go through your ears.

It’s a wonderful solution.

(See picture at the top for example.)

The whole procedure doesn’t cost much either. It’s simple, painless, it’s the perfect remedy.

So my customer had her earring posts made longer. She was then able to wear them for the very first time and LOVED them. She ended up being so delighted she left the store smiling.

See, anything is possible.

Remember, when it comes to jewelry, they can custom make, alter, fix or fit just about any design to fulfill your needs.

Why deprive yourself and go without the luxury and beauty of jewelry?

Now…

What to do about your fat head?

That’s another problem…

Cheers! :)

  1. Who knew?!? Thanks.

  2. I knew. But then, I’m the granddaughter, of a gifted bench jeweler. My best friend, likewise, is a jeweler’s granddaughter, AND the daughter of a talented watch and clock repairman who worked for the jeweler, after he had opened and ran the only local jewelry store in the town where I live. She now runs the store, and she and I have been doing business together, with me as her customer, for probably 20 years! (Sounds kind of like that old children’s rhyme, “This is the house that Jack built,” doesnt it? ;-)

Anyway, that’s a great reminder, for folks who think they are trapped into a jewelry situation with no way out! That lady who was so angry and likely also quite embarrassed by her physical “challenge” is one you turned into a lifelong customer! Now, she gets to wear pretty earrings just like her slimmer-lobed sisters. The only thing I’m surprised about was that it didn’t end with her bringing in a half dozen other pairs of gold earrings to be repaired like that as well.

Now, do they really add gold to the length of the existing posts? Or do they just replace the short posts with longer ones? ;-)

    • Hi Shari. Both can be done. It really depends on the earring. If the earring is hollow, you don’t want to put heat to the base of it, so adding another section of post to the short post is ideal. But yes, they do have longer post findings too. :) -Richard

  3. You’re absolutely right – I had forgotten all about that part about the hollow tubing creating some earrings. Thirty lashes with a wet noodle for me. But yes, it can be done.

I’ve had earring posts repaired myself, and they were hinged, curved, and a little locking half hoop that snapped down on top of the stationary post, from the other end. Very difficult to explain, unfortunately. They were my favorite hoops, because of their size, and the fact that they locked on nice and tight, but weren’t difficult to remove at the end of my day. I can’t really explain them better than that. But I can’t wear them anymore either, since one disappeared, I can’t buy new ones ANYWHERE, not even from who sold them in the first place. Oh well. Such is life.

    • You could have a jeweler make a mold of the earring and duplicate them. Or do a search on eBay for the manufacturer and style number of the earring. You might get lucky… -Richard
