The Pros And Cons Of A Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring

“That Was Easy!”

Buying a Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring sounds like an Easy Task

You Buy a Loose Diamond, have it Set in a Simple Tiffany-Style Mounting (see image), and you’re Good to go!

Right?

Not Entirely…

Buying a Solitaire is NOT as Simple as it Sounds…

There are much more things to Consider, like the Pros and Cons listed below.

Especially when Buying a Single Diamond versus a Wedding Set, everything is Different.

So let’s Dive into these Aspects that Affect a Solitaire Diamond, starting with the CONS!

Solitaire Diamond Ring CONS

Fist off…

1) Cookie Cutter Rings!

A Solitaire Diamond, like the Tiffany Style Engagement Ring is a Classic, Timeless, and BORINGGGGGG!

Every Single Solitaire looks the SAME! There’s nothing Cool or Unique about them (Unless you get one like this Skull Engagement Ring HERE!) You see one Solitaire Mounting, you see them all!

2) Average is So Small

The Average Carat Weight bought for a Solitaire Diamond is just 38 Points.

That’s Small!

And to see a Single Stone that Small on her Finger is not going to WOW anyone! It’s a Little, Itty, Bitty Diamond that’s Not Impressive. It won’t Knock her Socks off

This is what a 38 Point Diamond will look like on her Finger…

38 Point Diamond Doesn't Look Very Big

3) You’re Not Done Buying Rings

By Buying a Solitaire Diamond, it’s considered the Engagement Ring. Which means… You still have to Buy another RING!

So Start Saving NOW, because a Wedding Band could get Pretty Expensive later on.

The Solitaire is just the Beginning.

Now if you were to Buy a Wedding Set (that contains both Rings), you’d be done. No more Shopping! You’d be a Happy Camper.

Let’s hope the Wedding isn’t for a Couple of Years, you may NEED it!

4) You’re Gonna Want BIGGER

After you see what a 38 Point Diamond looks like, chances are, You’re Gonna Want BIGGER!

Especially when she tells you that she wants a One Carat Diamond! (The Dream Carat Weight)

And when you Upgrade Carat Weight, the Price not only Doubles, but Triples and Quadruples. Big Diamonds Cost a lot of Bucks!

(Like these VVS1, D, Diamonds HERE!)

5) You’re Gonna Want Better Quality

As the Size of the Stone Increases, so does Quality!

Because Inclusions and Color are more Apparent in Larger Stones, you’ll want to Upgrade the Quality as well. And Upgrading Quality just Blows Price outta the Water.

An Average Quality for a One Carat Diamond is this:

SI1, G-H, Very Good Cut, GIA Certified = $5,000

6) The Settings are HIGH

When you have a Solitaire Diamond, that Stone will Sit up High off the Mounting. They do this for a Reason: So a Wrap or Insert, Jacket or Guard, can Fit up against them.

See image…

(See all these Solitaire Wraps HERE!)

And, not only does the Stone Sit up High, but you’ll be Bumping it More Often because it’s Higher.

Bumps = Bands, Dents, Scratches, Dings, and Pulled Prongs!

Not to mention Chipped Stones!

That’s the Way Life goes with a Solitaire. Take it or Leave it.

Now that I’ve Painted a Pretty Picture of a Solitaire Nightmare… Let’s Turn the Tables and look at the PROS!

The Pros to a Solitaire Engagement Ring

Starting with…

1) It Retains Value

One Single Diamond will Retain its Value Much Better than a Wedding Set with Multiple Stones.

You have all the Money Invested into One Large Diamond, so Trade-Ins, or Re-Selling it later is Easy-Peasy. It’s Easier to Appraise, Easier to Certify, Easier to Insure…

It’s One Stone. You can’t get any Simpler than that.

2) With this Ring “I DO”

The Great Thing about such a Traditional Mounting is this: She’s Going to LOVE it!

That’s Right. Chances are she’ll LOVE a Solitaire Stone, and, it makes your Ring Buying Decision EASIER as well. If you don’t know Her Style, or what She Likes, Stick with what’s Proven and Works! A Mounting that Shows off a Single Diamond Better than any other Mounting on the Face of the Earth, The Tiffany Style Band, is the Best Way to Go!

She can have the Diamond set into Something Different if she likes. Or she can find a Band to Fit up against it.

It’s a WIN WIN!

Solitaires go with just about any Band out there.

You really can’t go Wrong!

3) Loose Diamond Heaven

I always say, if you’re Buying a Diamond Engagement Ring, that you should Always BUY the Diamond LOOSE First (and Certified). And then, and only then, should you Choose a Mounting for it.

That keeps you Focused on the Diamond and Quality, and that way you can View the Diamond Magnified from all Angles and Sides (Like you can at James Allen), and see all the Flaws inside the Stone.

This Task is much much harder to do when it’s Pre-Set. Prongs or Mounting could Easily be Covering up and Hiding Chips, Inclusions, Breaks, Imperfections…

Loose Stones are IT!

Loose First, then Mount it!

4) I See Numbers

Even after a Diamond is set in a Solitaire Ring, they are still Easy to Scope and Identify. Because the Stone sits up High, the Girdle is Exposed, and it allows for Easy Magnification (with a Microscope or a 10x Jeweler’s Loupe) so you can see any Laser Inscription Numbers on the side of the Stone (if it has any, not all Certified Diamonds are Laser Inscribed like the Stone shown below).

Viewing Diamond Laser Inscription Numbers

I LOVE Viewing Diamonds at 10x!

10x Magnification (What they Use to Grade Diamonds with) allows you to View the Stone Quickly, and Instantly be able to tell if it’s your Diamond or NOT! That way, you’ll see if your Diamond was Switched or Swapped Out for a Lower Quality Stone.

SWEET!

5) Let HER Pick the Mounting

Women want to be Surprised with the Proposal and Ring

But they also want the Ring they’ve always Dreamed of…

Which is why again, I Advise a Solitaire Mounting. You Present the Diamond to her in a Plain, Thin Ring, and tell her that you can go Ring Shopping with you (If she wants) so she can Pick out the Mounting she’s always Desired.

She’ll be Excited!

AND… She’ll be Delighted that you didn’t Ruin the Surprise! :)

6) Cleanings and Inspections

A Solitaire Mounting is the Easiest Ring to Clean and Inspect!

EVER!

(And I Prefer 4 Prongs versus 6 because it makes it more open to Viewing and Less Gaudy)

You can Stick a Soft Tooth Brush in between the Prongs and Gently Scrub underneath the Stone where it gets Dirtiest the most.

You can Pick up a 10x Jeweler’s Loupe and Easily see your Entire Stone, the Girdle, the Culet, Inspect it for Damage, Worn Prongs, Chips, etc…

(And you can also Buy Yourself a Simple and Effective Jewelry Cleaner to keep it Spotless)

Clean = Tons of Sparkles!

7) The Mountings are Cheap!

Now, while a Single Diamond will COST you MORE, the Mounting Surely WON’T!

Because this Tiffany Style of Ring is the Most Inexpensive Mounting you could Buy (As long as it’s not Platinum).

The Price is Great!

The Style is Perfect!

And the only thing left to Do…

Is to get a Big Fat “I DO!”

Good Luck Getting Down on one Knee

Here’s Hoping she says “YES!
