First Thing You Should Know About Diamonds

The first thing you should know about diamonds may be surprising.

It’s not the quality.

It’s not the 4C’s, cut, color, clarity and carat weight. It’s not even the certification or price.

It’s this fact:

Diamonds are deceiving.

It’s true. To most people, at first glance, all diamonds look the same.

Unless the diamonds actually have some major cracks or black spots, all diamonds will pretty much look similar.

This factor makes it hard for some people to understand why one diamond is priced more than another diamond of the exact same carat weight.

They all look alike.

Once you realize that they look similar, but aren’t, you can open yourself up to learn more about the quality and the 4C’s.

Diamonds are small to begin with. Inclusions are even smaller.

Not to mention the fact that most inclusions or flaws are so small they’re microscopic only. You can barely see them under a microscope or a 10x jeweler’s loupe. No wonder why they look comparable.

But they’re not.

All diamonds are different.

They may have small differences, like a 2% larger table or an extra facet, or a wavy girdle, but they’re there.

These little differences can add up big time. One dot, one pinpoint, one line is all it takes. There could be other things too, like a stone that has a large culet, or one with a high depth percentage, or even a diamond with fluorescence, but there are characteristics, traits, differences.

These may not change the outer appearance of the diamond much either. You might be able to detect a little bit more fire and brilliance in the stone, but the difference is there. More than likely, you will need to microscope the diamond to see.

The microscope doesn’t lie.

The microscope will show you the inside world of a diamond. The inclusions, nicks, trigons, uneven table, misaligned facets, polish and grain lines… All these things add up.

Appearances are deceiving.

Two diamonds side by side can be totally different in price. Thousands of dollars different.

When this happens, it should be like a light bulb going off in your head. It should tell you that you do need to look harder. Delve deeper. Learn more. Understand the 4C’s and why there is a difference.

Diamonds aren’t really deceiving.

We are only deceiving ourselves into thinking that they are.

So open your eyes.

Study diamonds.

Diamonds are all unique, just like you, just like me.

Cheers! :)
