What is Diamond DTW?

DTW is often brought up when it comes to Diamonds and Jewelry.

DTW means “Pennyweight” which specifically stands for

“Denarius Weight”

DWT is a measurement that is equal to 24 grains, 1⁄20 of a troy ounce, 1⁄240 of a troy pound, approximately 0.054857 avoirdupois ounce and exactly 1.55517384 grams; specifically. It is an antiquated term, but is still used; just not often (Read more about it in my post about Pennyweights).

More than likely what you’ll see is the term “TDW“, which is something totally different.

So what is TDW?

TDW stands for “Total Diamond Weight” and it refers to the Total Weight of all the Diamonds in a given ring.

BUT…

Carat Weights are Inconsistent!

Consistency with listing Diamonds Weights varies with different Jewelers. You have to learn the verbiage. Some list their weights as CWT (Carat Weight Total), as well as CTW (Carat Total Weight), as I talk about in my post here: CT vs CTW.

All in all, they all refer to one thing and one thing only, the combined Total Carat Weight of the entire piece.

An Example

If we’re talking about a Wedding Ring that has one center stone and a few side stones, TDW would mean the combination of the center stone weight and the side stone weight as well. Take a look at the examples below…

Wedding Set Total Diamond Weight

TDW means all the weight of all the stones in the ring. So if a center stone is .75 Carat and the sides stones are two Trilliants at .10 Carats each, then the TDW of that ring would be .95 TDW.

Follow Me?

TDW doesn’t refer to one stone. But ALL the Diamonds in that piece.

Keep in mind, if you have a Wedding Set, with both an Engagement Ring and a Wedding Band, both rings may have their own TDW. Usually though, Jewelry Stores will just list the Carat Weight of the entire set together. To Avoid Confusion!

The Engagement Ring could have 1.00 Carat Total, while the Wedding Band could have an additional .33 Carats Total, equaling 1.33 TDW.

If you don’t know when looking at a Wedding Set, ASK!

You’ll see TDW in magazines and Jewelry Ads, along with their other counterparts: CTW and CWT (Carat Total Weight and Carat Weight Total). They all mean the same thing!

Group it all together

What you’ll find, is that most companies will just list the entire range of Diamond Quality in that piece. Say the center stone is .75, SI1, H, and the side stones are .75, I1, J… They may list that entire ring as: 1.50 TDW, SI1-I1, H-J.

They’ll give you the entire range of Carat Sizes and Quality of Diamonds in that ring together.

Take a look at some TDW examples in the photo below…

What Is DTW - Total Diamond Weight

So one single stone will never be listed as TDW. Instead they will list one stone as CW or CT (Carat Weight, or Carat)… as also seen in the first ring in the image above…

But two stones or more will be listed as either: CTW, CWT, or TDW.

That’s It!

I believe that sums that up! :)

Thank you for this information. This really clears things up.

  2. What does DTW 1.5 mean? I and a half or 1 carat, and a fifth??

  3. We know a larger diamond has a higher price. Not as weight steps goes up price will be increase progressively. So DTW or CTW doesn’t show the value of diamond. e.g. a 2 CT diamond has a higher price than a pair of 1 CT diamonds.
