Who Buys The Mens and Ladies Wedding Bands?

Who Buys the Wedding Bands?

Him or Her?

The Truth Is:

They BOTH Do!

He is Supposed to Buy Her Wedding Band. And She is Supposed to Buy His.

That’s What Tradition Dictates Anyway

The Funny Thing is, it doesn’t always happen this way. Often the Man will End up Paying for Both Her Rings and His.

And that’s because he normally puts them on a Charge Account, which works out well because you generally Get a Better Deal Buying all the Rings Together at Once (like an Additional 10% off, or Interest Free Financing).

So it just makes sense to Take Advantage of the Extra Savings and Purchase them as a lot. Especially if you want to get Matching Wedding Bands (as many Couples do), or if you need to Order them in the Correct Ring Size.

The Engagement Ring Comes First

The Man will usually Buy the Engagement Ring first, and if the Ring already comes with a Fitted or Interlocking Wedding Band, Perfect. He’s All Done. But if he Buys an Engagement Ring like the Standard and Classic Tiffany Style Ring (simple plain ring), chances are, he’ll be Bringing Her Back into the Jewelry Store to Shop for Wedding Rings later.

That is what I Recommend as well, because he won’t Ruin the “SURPRISE PROPOSAL“, and she’ll still get what she Wants! It’s a Win-Win!

“Okay, we’ll look at his Band…”

And, while they’re at it, this is the time that Most Couples would also take a look at His Wedding Band as well (it’s usually Last on the List). They’ll Try on Plain Bands, Engraved Bands, Etched Bands, Hammered Rings, and even some Bands with Diamonds (Yes, some Men do want Diamonds).

They’ll try on Different Widths and Metals like White Gold, Titanium, Tungsten and Stainless Steel (I Wouldn’t Recommend Sterling Silver – Too Soft and it Tarnishes!) and probably get their Finger Sized so the Ring could be Fitted or Custom Ordered.

Standard Ring Sizes

Most Men’s Rings come in a Standard Size 10, and Ladies Rings usually come in a 6 or 6.5.

So you can see how Convenient it is to just add his Band to the Grand Total. I mean, what’s another Hundred when he’s already Spending Thousands?

It’s not totally Fair, but times have changed and so have the way that people shop for Bridal Rings and Sets.

So Who Buys the Wedding Bands?

He Does!

And he Never Stops Paying for it!

Cheers! :)

  1. Just to give you a little perspective, 40 years ago, my fiancé and I finally went shopping for our wedding rings around the first of June, for our end of July wedding.

I had already been wearing my little quarter carat diamond engagement ring (yep 26 points was OK back then!) since the prior November, which we got from a mall store during one of their pre-Christmas sales. It was bright and pretty and full of sparkle in the full color flyer that had come in the Sunday paper ads, and a quarter carat ring in 14kt white or yellow gold four prong mounting could be had for $119.00 plus tax! Of course nothing was mentioned about quality, and at 19, I still had a lot to learn from my grandfather! So, we had gone to check them out, and my eager Air Force two-striper boyfriend became my official fiancé before we left the store. Could have had a third carat for about $130.00, but I had already decided not to appear too greedy, so a quarter carat was fine, and he opened his very first charge account to pay for it! We were very young, and in love, and all that cute stuff, and did what we could with our limited resources. I think he paid like $20 a month on it for 6 months, and it was paid for. My gosh how things have changed!! We didn’t have much in the way of parental contributions coming to pay for the wedding, which wasn’t the norm. Parents were still footing most if not all the bill back then, if they could. But that wasn’t happening for us. Mine contributed what they could, and family members contributed services, such as photography from my uncle who was a professional photographer. That was considerable, then or now!

Anyway, we went shopping together for our wedding bands, and I had already been in and out of every jewelry store in the Hampton Roads area of southeastern Virginia, looking myself! I wasn’t at all sure what I wanted, not wanting to outweigh my diamond, which didn’t take much! I knew I wanted something relatively plain and simple, but not to disappear completely! The brand new Comfort Fit bands had just hit the market, but my goodness, were they expensive! I really would have loved one, but couldn’t really justify the cost back then. We were walking through a J.C. Penney store on our way IN to the mall, but I saw their fine jewelry counter and made a beeline for it. It was one I hadn’t seen before. We found a 2mm white gold plain band that exactly matched the profile of my engagement ring. Looked like a perfectly matched set, and could be had for the exorbitant amount of $14.99! I have long, thin fingers and at the time, I wore a size 5½. They had a 5 that just fit perfectly. Looking for his ring, which of course I knew was on ME, as was the tradition, I found a lovely matching 5mm 14kt white gold band that just happened to fit perfectly, for the palatial sum of $55.00! Now that had to be put on layaway, as I did not have the wherewithal to purchase it upfront, and being well under 21, could not open a charge account. So, layaway it was, and since I worked elsewhere in the mall, I could just pop over anytime and make a payment on it! And I did. I has it paid off in about five weeks, just in time to put it on him during our wedding ceremony in the azalea gardens of the biggest city park in the Commonwealth of Virginia! The entire affair cost us about $450, including rings, clothes for him, my gown, and fabric, patterns and notions to make two bridesmaids dresses, motel room, the food for a big picnic, a three tier cake, the license, the minister, and flowers to carry. It was heavy on the DIY, and a whole lot of fun! Best investment we ever made!

I think now of the costs of what we bought back then, and would almost give anything to be back there again and relive those times. We didn’t have kids for several years, and had minimal expenses and obligations. The relative low cost of living back then was just the economy of the day, and people made their way through it just as they did any other time. We did still have some rough times ahead of us, but we got through them together. I guess that’s why we’re still here to tell the tale, forty years later! (And, oh yes, I have about a dozen Comfort Fit bands now in various metals and widths, from 10kt to 18kt white and yellow gold, Sterling silver, titanium, stainless steel, cobalt chrome, etc. I started collecting them about 20 years ago!)
