At the top of the chart, we have the best color range of them all. Or should I say...
No Color!
D, E, and F is an incredible Color range. They are extremely Brilliant, and will really add a lot of sparkle to any Diamond. Colorless is void of any color whatsoever. To see color, we must move down the list.
What we find most of, (as far a Diamond Color goes in Jewelry Stores) are the color ranges G, H, I, and J. G-J make up the Near Colorless category. Almost all Rings sold in stores today have one of these letters attached to them. G and H, (The higher end of the Near Colorless range) are considered Fine White Diamonds. These are great colors to have in Diamonds (Almost undetectable Color).
I - J Color
I-J is normally where you will start to see the Faint Yellow hues showing through. To most people, this cast will make the Diamond appear darker, or tinted. Some will just think that the Diamond is picking up color from the mounting. While this may be, chances are good that it's just the body color of the Diamond itself.
The lower end of the Near Colorless range (I-J) are the Diamonds that people are always trying to wipe clean. Almost like there's a smudge or stain on the stone that won't come off. It could drive you crazy! But, it's the color of the Diamond and it's in there for life! It's just something that you'll have to deal with. Just like skin tone, most Diamonds do have some color or body tone to them.
K - L - M Color
When you get down into the K-L-M range, the color of the Yellow can be strong! You'll have no problems seeing that yellow cast in your Diamond. Some people like a little warmth in their Diamonds, but usually this K-L-M yellow cast is not a pretty color. It certainly generates a lot of sneers and frowns upon showing.
P Color
Moving on... When you're dealing with the N and beyond color ranges, the color Yellow is like a sea of dirty stained mustard water. (And P color really looks like P) Look at some yellow Diamonds and you'll quickly understand what I'm talking about. These Diamonds can sit in the Jewelry showcases for years because no one wants them. Even if they were marked down 80%, they'd still be a hard sell. Yellow does NOT move well! Brown may, lots of stores have Champagne colored Diamonds and the new Chocolate Colored Diamonds, but they are never going to compare with a Diamond of pure White Color! White is King in Diamonds.
If you're looking for a great color in a Diamond, my suggestion is to stick in the D-E-F range, or G-H color ranges. Those are awesome colors and you'll end up getting a great looking Diamond with lots of brilliance and sparkle!
D-E-F is awesome.
G-H is the next best thing!
