The first thing you need to know about Cut, is that
NO Diamond is perfect! No Diamond is Cut perfect, it just doesn't exist! So trying to find a Diamond that has both an
Ideal Cut, a Perfect Color, and a Flawless Clarity, is impossible.
A perfect Diamond is a feat that will lead you no where. You'll get nothing but frustrations. So don't even attempt perfection.
Compromises
With Diamonds there are always tons of compromises. Do you want a Diamond that looks larger than it really is? Do you want one that faces up good, but is a little bit thick in the Girdle? What if you found the perfect Diamond, but it had a large Culet? Or Fluorescence? Or an Insanely low price? Would that influence you?
You see, there are always things to consider and weigh when looking at Diamonds and Quality and Cut.
But before we get too detailed and too intricate with Angle Sizes and Percentages, let's take a closer look at the actual names of the Diamonds Facets that make up a Brilliant Cut Diamond.
Facets
The Facets shown here are for a standard Brilliant Cut Diamond. Since this is the most popular Cut of Diamond there is, and the easiest to understand, I'll concentrate on that Cut. The other Fancy Cuts like the Marquise, Princess, Pear, Emerald, Baguette, Trillion, Oval and Radiant will just have to wait! It just makes it easier for everyone.
So a Round Brilliant Cut it is!
Looking at the Diagram above, you'll see a lot of crazy Shapes and Names. Star Facets? Lower-Girdle Facet? Culet? I won't get into all of these, but I will touch on the most important Facets and Features of them. At the top of the list (and the Diamond) is the Table!
The Table
The Table of the Diamond is one huge area of concern. A small Table can make your Diamond look too small. A large Table can make your Diamond look bigger than it really is. But it all comes with a heavy price to pay!
Tables, Percentages, Fire, Brilliance and what to look for, are all coming up... Read on...
