Where are Cultured Pearls made?

Colored Cultured Pearls are made in China. They produce these somewhat low quality Pearls in huge quantities. The process that they are made is called "Mantle Tissue Activation" (It's an Ancient Chinese Secret! Don't Ask!)

Freshwater Pearls

They make these Cultured Pearls in Freshwater vs Saltwater. Many of these Pearls are not round, but Oval Shaped in appearance. This is why they call these types of Pearls "Potato Pearls", because of their shape. (A lot of Potato Pearls are now coming almost round these days too! Go figure!)

Most of the Potato Pearls you find on the Market have a nice smooth shape with just a few slight blemishes. The Luster of these Pearls is often good as well with a beautiful rainbow of iridescent colors that add a richness and a shine to the strands. Those glistening greens and oranges and purples and blacks that glow from the Pearls outer shell is what they call the "Orient". It makes the Pearl simply stunning to look at!

Shape and Color

All Pearls will vary slightly in shape and color due to the fact that they are Natural and Porous. Porous means the Pearls will absorb any oils and dyes easily. This is why Dyed Pearls are common and come in a wide assortment of Colors!

But just know that these lustrous Colors will tend to fade in time. Sun, Cleaning, and Wear and Tear will make the Dye fade quicker.

Pearl Hardness

You just have to be a little bit more careful with Pearls. Pearls are soft to begin with. (Only a 2.5 on the MOHs Scale of Hardness.) Which means, you can often scratch a Pearl and Damage or Crack the outer shell of the Pearl called the "Nacre".

Once the Pearl is chipped, there's no way to fix it, except for replacing it.

Cleaning Pearls

To clean Chocolate Pearls like these, DO NOT put them in harsh chemicals or Ultrasonic Cleaners. Clean them gently with a damp cloth and wipe them clean. Don't use soaps or detergents on them either. You don't want to pull any of that pretty Chocolate coloring out!

Chocolate Pearl Prices

The great thing about Dyed Pearls, is that they are not expensive. Usually around $100 per Strand or less. (Where as a Natural Genuine Colored Pearl Strand can be in the Thousands!) Normally you can't tell the difference between Natural Color and Dyed Color anyway... Except for the Price Tag!

Keep in mind, most Dyed Pearl Necklaces don't come in a variety of Necklace sizes though. Most will come in a standard 18" Length and the Pearls are usually around 5-6 MM in Pearl thickness...

Which is perfect for every Day use!
