You know what a Cocktail Ring is, don't you Ladies? It's a Ring that has tons and tons of small Diamonds in it, held in by billions of
gaudy beads or prongs and stacked up on top of cheap Yellow Gold Mountings! (see picture) Yes,
most Cocktail Rings are old-looking and made or 10kt or 14kt Yellow Gold. The heads and prongs are either White Gold or more than likely, just
Rhodium Plated to look white. They are
Rhodium Plated to make them sparkle more and to mask the globs of Gold from the globs of Diamonds!
So let's get to the point... barf! Why do Women like these gaudy monstrosities? Why do Jewelers still sell them? These are low quality Rings with Diamonds plastered all over them looking like pyramids! I mean, come on... Some Rings have 50 Diamonds in them totaling 1.00 Carat! WOW! The Carat Weight is impressive, but when you do the math, that means those Diamonds are only .02 points a piece! Gasp!
And you know how many prongs it takes to hold in 50 Diamonds? My guess is at least 150 or more. Better get an Extended Service Plan for that Ring, because when those prongs wear down and need to be retipped, it's going to cost you a fortune!
So why do I dislike Cocktail Rings so much? Could it be the insane, crazy, prong-work? Prongs slapped over the Diamonds quickly and haphazardly, sometimes covering them, sometimes not. Most of the times the prongs are missing the Diamonds all together and just sticking up. Don't believe me? Grab a Jeweler's Loupe and take a close-up peek. Those prongs are always going to be catching things, snagging things, snapping off, losing Diamonds... You've got so many prongs, you could lose a Diamond or two and never know it!
Not that you wouldn't mind losing a Diamond once you see the quality of them. Under a 10x Loupe, there's a good chance you'll see lots of inclusions, cloudy spots, black pepper spots, even chips. Most of the Diamonds in Cocktail Rings will look like pieces of salt. Some will look like Yellow Globs of Glue! No lie!
The Mountings are usually cheap and weak. Wire frames, thin hollowed out Gold, nothing substantial, nothing durable. You get a BIG look with very little quality. If you want my advice, pass up the old, gaudy, granny-style Cocktail Rings and get a good looking Ring with a couple of nice quality Diamonds in it.
Newer variations of Ladies Cocktail Rings that are cute, stylish and stunning are called "Right-Hand Rings". (see picture) The new Right Hand Rings are beautiful, modern and one Ring that definitely gets it 'Right'!
