Comparing 6000 Dollar Diamonds

Spending $6,000?

Looking for a great diamond with a pocket book of 6 G’s?

Well hold onto your hats, because there is quite a bit of variance in what 6 grand can buy you in a loose diamond

Not only differences in clarity, but color, cut, fluorescence, and carat weight.

So what will 6 thousand get you?

Take a peek…

P.S. This is what all my abbreviations stand for: POL – Polish, SYM – Symmetry, FLUOR – fluorescence, EX – Excellent, VG – Very Good, G (listed under CUT) – Good

So as you can see when you select 6 thousand as the price range (and not worrying about anything else), the diamond quality shifts in extremes.

Take Clarity

Clarity goes from SI2, all the way up to VVS2 for the exact same carat weight (around 1.00 carat).

Color Changes from Light Yellow to White

Diamond color goes from J color (bottom of the Near Colorless range), all the way up to D (the best color in the World).

Cut as well

Cut grades are from “Excellent” (top of the line), all the way down to “good“. Same goes with Polish and Symmetry.

Fluorescence Varies from None to Strong Blue

That’s from zero fluorescence to Glow-In-The-Dark Blue!

So what does all this mean?

It means, if you’re looking for a $6,000 diamond, STOP, SHOP, and COMPARE!

Because what you’ll find from store to store will be all over the board.

You could end up with visible inclusions (I clarity). You could get a diamond with a yellow hue (J-K-L-M color). You could end up with a diamond that’s cut poorly and makes the diamond appear dark and dull (lacks sparkle).

It could also look foggy or hazy due to the presence of fluorescence.

And even carat weights will vary.

Some stores you could end up with a 3/4 carat, while others (like James Allen as shown above), you can get a 1.29 carat (massive in size).

So you have to look at everything that goes into the price of a diamond: cut, color, clarity, carat weight, polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and certification (GIA is the best there is).

You will probably have to determine what truly matters the most to you, because as you see, you have to sacrifice in some areas. If one area is high up the list, usually that means something else is lower in grades. It’s a give or take (if you select only the best in every field, then expect to pay DOUBLE!)

So looking at all of these stones (all they had for exactly $6,000 at the time of this post), which would I recommend?

These are the Best for the Price:

CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR PRICE VIEW
1.29, SI2, I, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.00, VS2, J, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.13, VS2, J, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.21, VS2, I, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.20, SI2, G, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.20, SI2, G, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.03, SI2, F, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.01, SI2, E, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW

I chose these because they are all triple excellent cuts (what makes a diamond sparkle), have no fluorescence, and the clarities are at least SI2 or higher (meaning no visible flaws).

And if I were to truly narrow it down to my top 2 picks, these are my choices:

The Top 2 Diamonds:

CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR PRICE VIEW
1.20, SI2, G, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW
1.00, VS2, I, EX, EX, EX, NONE $6,000 VIEW

This is because that SI2 diamond is stunning. Very few flaws inside (and you can rotate the stone to see it from all angles). It has a fine white color (G), has no fluorescence, it’s huge (1.20 carats), with an excellent cut, GIA certified, and $6,000, of course.

The other stone, VS2, I diamond, is a much cleaner stone, but the color is a little bit lower in the Near Colorless range (nothing most people would ever notice). It is a little bit smaller stone than the first; 1.00 carat right on the dot. Really an excellent diamond to buy!

So Compare Everything!

Decide what you really want; a better color, a better cut (more sparkle), a bigger stone???

Because $6,000 can get you a lot…

But what are you willing to cut?

Cheers! :)
