FAMILY RINGS VS MOTHER’S RINGS

“What’s the diff?”

What is the difference between family rings and mother’s rings?

That’s a good question that deserves an answer.

And luckily, that answer is pretty simple…

Family rings:

Family rings are generally rings that hold family member’s birthstones. It could be any family members, immediate or distant; grandparents, mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, grand kids, step kids, aunts, uncles… Any family member that you love and cherish could be put in a family ring. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see some people put their pet’s birthstones in these rings too. :)

Family rings will often be the exact same styles and designs as Mother’s rings are, just with family gemstones versus only kids. Some rings will even have their engraved names directly on the ring itself, as shown in the family ring below…

Mother’s rings:

Mother’s rings usually only have her kid’s birthstones in the ring and nothing else.

Sometimes the father (who usually buys this kind of ring with the kids, and usually as a Mother’s Day gift) will put the mother’s birthstone in the ring as well. But 9 times out of 10, it’s just the kids, as seen below…

Recommended birthstones:

There are a wide variety of stones that can be used for these types of rings. I always recommend genuine stones versus fake or synthetic stones. They’ll look better and last longer. I also recommend faceted gemstones versus organic stones or fragile stones (Such as pearl, opal and tanzanite).

The gemstones (or birthstones) that I recommend for family rings and mother’s rings are as follows:

Birthstone list:

• January: Garnet
• February: Amethyst
• March: Aquamarine
• April: Diamond (if you can’t afford one, use CZ – Cubic Zirconia)
• May: Emerald
• June: Created Alexandrite – Pearl is round and too soft, and a real Alexandrite is too rare and very expensive!
• July: Ruby
• August: Peridot
• September: Sapphire
• October: Pink Tourmaline – Opal is too soft, and if the Birthstone is for a man, you may want to use Green Tourmaline instead! :)
• November: Citrine, or Yellow Topaz can be substituted!
• December: Blue Topaz, or you can also use Blue Zircon or Tanzanite, even though Tanzanite is softer and not recommended for everyday wear.

What style of ring you decide to purchase doesn’t matter much, just buy one you like and one that will hold the right amount of stones.

Additional stones:

Just be prepared to add on additional stones if the special occasion arises… You never know when the stork will pay a sudden visit. :)

Thankfully, they make rings large enough to hold an endless amount of stones…
