Ring Too Tight and Snug Stuck on Finger?

Women like to play in the Jewelry Store and try on Big Diamond Rings.

They put them on their Fingers and pretend to get them stuck. Some do. The boyfriends will look at me and ask “What do you do if the ring really does gets stuck and she can’t get it off?

I like to smile at them and say “Not a problem. We have this little gizmo in the back that we use to Cut Off the Finger… “

This always makes them Hesitate for a Second. I can see their eyes Grow Big, then they finally get the Joke and Smile and Laugh. Ha, evil isn’t it? Somehow, they always find a way of getting that ring off.

The Ring really is Stuck!

Sadly this is not always the case. I make light of the subject, but some people really do have a problem and can not get their Rings off. Their Rings get Stuck on their Fingers and it gets Uncomfortable and can Cut Off Circulation to the Finger! A Blue Finger can be a cause for Panic and Emergency. It has to be dealt with quickly and carefully. It’s a Scary Thing!

Lots of things can cause your Ring to get Stuck on your Finger. Your Ring gets Embedded into your Skin and HURTS!

What Causes this to Happen?

There are lots of reasons…

Some people put their Wedding Ring on their Finger the Day of the Wedding and never take it off. 20 Years later, when their Bodies and Fingers are Fatter, they notice their Body and Skin has grown up around their Small Ring leaving a Deep Indentation in their Finger. That Poor Ring gets Sandwiched and locked in the Folds of Puffy, Mounded Flesh!

Other Women forget to Remove their Rings at night and wake up with Swollen, Enlarged Fingers that painfully lock their Rings in place.

Men are always too Rough on their Rings too. Some Smash the Ring picking things up. Others get their hands smashed at work causing their Ring to turn into an Oval Flat Tire on their Fingers.

Allergies Cause Swelling?

Some people have Allergies that cause their Fingers to Swell up and Enlarge as well.

The Bottom line is: It doesn’t matter what causes your Ring to get Stuck, but that it is Stuck, and you want to get it Unstuck. You’ve tried pulling the Ring off. You’ve tried Hand Lotions and Soaps and Creams… You may have even tried to put Ice on your Hands and Fingers to Reduce the Swelling. Nothing Works! It drives people nuts. They finally come into the Jewelry Store in a Panic wondering what they have to do to Remove the Trapped Ring.

So HOW do you Remove your Ring from your Hurting Finger?

That really is the Big Question: How do you Remove Rings that get too Tight, Snug, and Hurt the Finger?

There really is no Real Trick to doing this. Sometimes when the Finger gets so Swollen and Engorged it’s beyond the point of help. I’ve seen a Couple Blue and Purple Fingers come into the store before, it’s not pretty!

But there is help…

Jewelers will always try to get the rings off first the normal way. They’ll use Lotions and Windex and work the Ring off the Finger.

Sometimes they are lucky. Sometimes just working the Swollen Finger through the Loop of the Ring can cause it to slip off.

One thing you have to remember, when customers try to get their Rings off they try by pulling the ring straight off, and all that does is Bunch the Folds of your Skin together and Trap the ring even more. Jewelers do something different… They will move the Ring up the Finger a little at a Time, and in the process, Pull Parts of the Skin through the Ring. Gently working the Skin through a little at a time can really make the difference. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t.

Usually when it’s to the point where customers have to come into the Jewelry Store, it’s too late! It’s usually a last resort and there’s only one thing left to do…

Cut It Off!

Yep, that’s right. You knew it was coming. Your pretty little Wedding Band will have to be Snipped in Half! Jewelers are not as Rough as Paramedics though when it comes to Ring removal. In an Emergency, Paramedics use Bolt Cutters and don’t really care about Saving the Ring.

Jewelers are a little bit more Careful. We actually use a Small Circular Saw (P.S. You can Buy one on Amazon for just a Couple of Bucks) that slips in between the Finger and the Ring. This Steel Tool gently Cuts a Straight Line through the Shank of your Ring. (Where they size it. See Picture!) Then with Pliers, each end of the Spliced Ring is Grasped and Pulled up and away from the Finger. Bending the Ring up and back allows us to Remove it off of your Finger. You just have to be Extremely Careful because the Edges of the Ring get RAZOR SHARP from the Saw. It can Slice your Finger if you yank your hand away too FAST. Be Careful! Let Slide the Ring gently off your Swollen Finger. WHEW!

Once you get the Ring Removed…

Once removed, you should feel some Instant Relief. And once that Ring comes off there are two things you must do:

1) Wash your hands immediately! The ring saw slices through the rings and leaves Sharp Little Jagged Pieces of Gold Dust on your hands and fingers. You do not want those Slivers in your eyes! Wash your hands pronto to remove any Small Metal Fragments.

2) Wait a Couple Weeks or even a Couple Months before you get your Ring Sized to Fit your finger again. Right now, your Finger is still Swollen and Puffy from working it for hours. That Indentation took years to indent. It’ll take a while before your finger returns to normal again, which means it’ll be hard to get a Correct Ring Size while your Finger’s in this state. Wait until it heals and then get your Ring Resized to fit!

And don’t worry, Jewelers have a knack for Reshaping, Resizing and Resoldering your Rings back to normal. The Sawing only takes a couple minutes. The Sizing a couple of days. But in the end, your Ring will be back together. It’ll look Brand New again.

You’ll be able to wear it and be Happy.

And you won’t have to worry about your Finger again! :)

10 Comments on RING TOO TIGHT AND STUCK ON YOUR FINGER?

  1. Frankly, I like how my tightly fitted ring fits. It’s permanent and secure and I will never have it chopped off. Others may beg to differ, but that is how I feel about my “non-removable” wedding ring which I’ve worn got many years and have never taken off so far. I think a wedding ring that is too tight to remove is a symbol of Lifetime Commitment.

Thankyou this was very interesting and helpful :) I recently managed to get my very tight wedding ring off it was a slow process but I got there, now I will get it resized. Thankyou :-)

  4. I had the same attitude and was willing to just leave my rings on for a lifetime, until now that the engagement diamond was lost. Those prongs can hurt. Still hoping to find a way without cutting them off. :(

  5. But is it dangerous to your finger when your finger basically grows around your wedding ring leaving a skinny spot where it sits? Does it cut off circulation?

    • Hi Tracy. It can be dangerous, yes. If it cuts off circulation, you could lose a finger. Normally though, this growth occurs over the course of many years, so it’s not an instant strangle. This is why most will go for 20-30 years before they even notice that their ring is 2 sizes too small. Once the ring is cut off, it takes the finger quite a while to grow back to normal thickness. Which is why you should wait to have it sized again. -Richard

    • Tracy, you have to watch you don’t cut off the circulation but other than that the ring should be tight so it doesn’t come off. As another says its a lifetime committment. I once went to a jeweller to have a tight ring cut off and they persuaded me otherwise and its been fine ever since despite it not being removed.
