Grade Bump?<\/h2>\n

\nI’ve often Wrote about the Fact that many Jeweler’s Grade Bump<\/a> their Diamonds.<\/p>\n

\nThey say that the Stone is a VS2 (just as an Example<\/strong>), when in Fact it’s an SI1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nOr, it’s a VVS2 Clarity Diamond<\/strong>, and it turns out that the Diamond Clarity really is VS1<\/strong> instead!<\/p>\n

\nI Warn People that this “Grade Bumping<\/strong>” can happen with both Clarity<\/strong> AND Color<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nA G Colored Diamond could be Sold as an F.<\/p>\n

\nA D Color could really be an E<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This Grade Bump is Legit and LEGAL!<\/h2>\n

\nWhy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBecause Grading Stones is an Educated and Opinionated Guess<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

The FTC Allows It!<\/h2>\n

\nTen People could Grade a Particular Stone and you’d get Multiple Opinions on what the Quality and Grades of that Diamond are.<\/p>\n

\nSo really, who do you Believe?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Certified…<\/h2>\n

\nThis is why I Gently Push People into Buying Certified Diamonds<\/a> (Diamonds with a Diamond Report<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\"GIA<\/p>\n

\nAt least with an Outside Opinion by a Very Credible Source, like GIA or AGS<\/strong>, your Odds of getting the Quality of Stone you’re Paying for is Very Likely. Much, Much Better than just taking the Jeweler’s Word for it!<\/p>\n

\nThe Truth is, Many Consumers do just take the Jeweler’s Expertise, Knowledge, and Word. They are the “Experts” after all!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThe Quality stated MUST be the Quality Sold! Right?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThe Jewelry Store goes so far as to even put that Quality in Writing!<\/p>\n

So how can it be Wrong?<\/h2>\n

\nIf they say it’s a VS2, F Diamond<\/a>, and they list that on the Receipt, and also give you a Full Appraisal on the Item, then it must be Truthful, RIGHT<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Nope! Not Always!<\/h2>\n

\nYou Know Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBecause they know that you’ll Accept the Paperwork, their Word, and their “Good Deal<\/strong>“, and you’ll Never Question it<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nYou’ll shove the paperwork in a drawer or in your safe and forget about it.<\/p>\n

\nYou’ll NEVER Verify the Quality you Bought!<\/strong><\/p>\n

EVER!<\/h2>\n

\nYou’ll take what they give you as Factual and you’ll Never Think Twice.<\/p>\n

\nLet me Repeat, just because the Store puts the Quality in Writing doesn’t mean it’s the Truth!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nEspecially when the FTC says Diamond Quality can be off by One Whole Grade one way or the other<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo a J could really be a K<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An SI2 could really be an I1<\/h2>\n

\n“Ohhh, that’s why it Cost $1,000 Less than Everyone Else…<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\"Diamond<\/p>\n

So What Should You Do?<\/h2>\n

\nIf you want to Buy a Diamond that’s NOT<\/strong> Certified…<\/p>\n

\nLearn about Diamonds First!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nMicroscope<\/a> the Inclusions. Compare the Stones. If the Price is Much, Much Cheaper than every other Store around, then it should Raise a Red Flag!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIf the Diamond is truly what Quality they say it is, it should NOT Sell for Thousands Less<\/strong> than Everyone Else! That Would NEVER Happen! <\/strong> (Unless it’s an Online Store like James Allen<\/a> who has No Overhead<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

\nThere’s a Reason why <\/strong>that Stone is Cheaper: <\/p>\n

It’s a Cheaper Cut…<\/h2>\n

\nIt Lacks Brilliance. The Color or Clarity is Exaggerated<\/strong>. The Diamond has Strong Fluorescence<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Something!<\/h2>\n

\nAnd of course, only Buy from a Reputable Jeweler. Check the BBB<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\nAnd even if you do Buy from them, still take the Stone to a Gem Appraiser<\/strong> and have them Double Check the Quality (Do this quickly while it’s still within the Return Policy<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Verify what the Jeweler says<\/h2>\n

\nVerify the Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nNote that I Suggest a Gem Appraiser<\/strong> Versus just another Jeweler.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/h2>\n

\nBecause the other Jeweler will more than likely try to Persuade you into Returning the Diamond and Buying one from them Instead<\/strong>. Competitors do this<\/strong>. They’ll Knock the Ring and say stuff like “It doesn’t look like an SI1 to me” or “You see that Noticeable Flaw, it’s Very, Very Visible” or “We could Sell you a Much Better Diamond for Less!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nIt’s always a Touchy Topic when you get Competitors Involved to Verify your Purchase. They have something to Gain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo go to a Gem or Diamond Appraiser instead (look them up in the Phone Book<\/strong>). Someone who does nothing but Grade and Evaluate Diamonds and Gemstones.<\/p>\n

\nThey’ll give you an Unbiased Opinion<\/strong> as to what the Stone is and put it all in Writing.<\/p>\n

But Seriously…<\/h2>\n

\nYour Best Bet still, is to Just Buy Certified Diamonds instead!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBuy a Certified Loose Diamond<\/a> (GIA or AGS Graded<\/strong>), and have it Mounted after you Purchase it. And even then, still take the time to look Closely at the Diamond. <\/p>\n

\nMicroscope the Stone. Verify the Flaws in the Diamond<\/strong> against the Flaws listed on the Diamond Report<\/a> (Match them up with the Plot)…<\/p>\n

\nLike so…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Match<\/p>\n

Compare Stones<\/h2>\n

\nCompare the Stone with other Stones in the Same Quality Range, and even Compare them to Grades Higher and Lower. Just to see the Difference!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd if you can, buy a Certified Diamond that’s also Laser Inscribed!<\/strong> (Usually done on Smaller Carat Weights) The Report Number will be Permanently Etched onto the Side of the Girdle. You’ll be able to Loupe<\/a> this and Verify that this Diamond Matches the Report! <\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s the Best Way to get it in Writing<\/h2>\n

\nA Certified Stone will Protect you<\/strong>. Protect your Stone<\/strong>. Protect your Money<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

And that’s a Fact!<\/h2>\n

\nCertified is the only Way to Go! <\/strong><\/p>\n
