French tips?<\/h2>\n

“Waiter, waiter, there’s a fly in my soup…<\/strong>” ha!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not the French tip I’m talking about…<\/p>\n

\nIf you look close enough as some fancy cut diamonds<\/strong>, like the marquise cut, heart shaped cut, and pear cut, you’ll notice that some cuts look different than the rest.<\/p>\n

The faceting is different.<\/h2>\n

\nThat’s because some fancy cuts have French tips.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nNo… not the fingernail<\/strong> kind…<\/p>\n

So what is a French tip?<\/h2>\n

\nA French tip is a variation of the cut in which several small facets replace one large bezel facet<\/strong> at the end.<\/p>\n

\nTake a peek at the diagram below to understand what a French tip<\/strong> looks like…<\/p>\n

\"Fancy<\/p>\n

The French tip makes the points of the diamond look more like a star<\/strong>, and it also adds a touch more sparkle to the ends.<\/p>\n

\nBut these little flashes of reflected light aren’t the real reason<\/strong> why French tips are added to some stones.<\/p>\n

So why are French tips added?<\/h2>\n

\nFor one main reason<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nIt makes the tip of the diamond (which is the weakest spot of the stone) a little bit more durable<\/strong> because it adds bulk or mass to the end.<\/p>\n

\nFrench tips don’t add any more monetary value to the stone, nor does it take any away, it just makes the end a bit thicker and more secure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

French tips are the way to go.<\/h2>\n

\nIf a fancy cut diamond (heart, pear or marquise) has French tips, the only way to find out is to look closer at the stone<\/strong> under a microscope<\/a> or a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a>. French tips will not be listed<\/strong> on a GIA diamond report<\/strong> (why, I don’t know<\/strong>). Loupe the diamond and see if the ends are French or not.<\/p>\n

\nAnd that’s the last word on French tips<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nMakes you want to go microscope a few and see for yourself. <\/p>\n
