They don’t grab your ears and pull your head closer to get a better look (can you imagine?) People won’t get near enough to scrutinize the stones to really see if there are a couple of black spots here and there.

They just don’t!

Plus, with diamond studs, the stones are usually under 1/2 carat each (1.00 carat total weight). Which means, even if they did get close enough to see the flaws, the stones are so small a piece that you wouldn’t see much anyway.

That’s the great thing about diamond earrings. You don’t need a really high clarity of diamond (VS, VVS) like you would in a bridal ring.

No one’s going to know the difference

This is also why 99% of all the diamond studs sold on the market today are lower clarities, like I1, I2 and I3. Just understand that I clarity is a huge range, and some I clarity diamonds face up well, and others look like crap.

I clarity defined:

The definition of I clarity is “eye-visible“. They are included diamonds that have eye-visible flaws in them. Flaws like clouds, cracks, carbon spots, black specks and such. But when you put these small stones in your ears, from any distance, and especially if they are partially covered up by your hair, no one will see them.

That’s good!

Plus, buying nice looking I clarity diamonds won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

What should you look for?

When shopping for diamond earrings, there are 4 main things that will drastically improve your odds of getting a pair of kick ass earrings…

1) Diamond Color

2) Great Sparkle

3) Metal Color

4) No HUGE Black Spots

Let me Explain…

1) Diamond Color

Strive for a diamond color that’s white. I usually recommend at least G-H or higher (D-E-F) for best results. Color does matter in studs. Your eyes can see color. If the diamonds are yellow, brown or white, you can detect it.

The whiter the diamonds, the bigger they will look, and the brighter and more beautiful they will appear. They will “POP” in your ears. Diamonds of colorless color (D-E-F) are my favorite. They look like they have a spotlight upon them.

2) Great Sparkle

You want your diamonds to sparkle more than anything else. You want that dazzle from your earlobes. Diamond earrings are probably the most beautiful type of jewelry there is, and diamond studs are so practical and simple that you can wear them every single day.

Plus, diamond studs are noncommittal! :)

They make the perfect gift for any occasion.

To see if the stones sparkle, look at them when purchasing. Tilt them in the light. Hold them up to your ears and look in a mirror. Can you see the sparkle? Do the diamonds dance? Do they grab the light with brilliance and fire?

You want that!

Diamonds that are cut well, will give off tons of sparkle and life.

That’s the main goal of diamond earrings, they need to shine.

They must look stunning.

3) Metal Color

Believe it or not, but the color of metal you have your diamonds in matters.

Setting them in 14k white gold is the best choice. They will add sparkle and beauty to the diamonds.

Why is this?

Because white gold is a highly polished and lustrous, bright, white metal. This adds whiteness and brightness to the stones.

If the stones are set in 14k yellow gold, the diamonds will actually pick up yellow from the mountings and make the stones look yellow themselves.

White gold mountings will make your diamonds look awesome.

Platinum (a more durable white metal) works just as well (but is 4 times as expensive). Platinum is more of a darker, gun-metal gray, so I prefer the brightness of white gold instead.

4) No HUGE Black Spots

Small little imperfections and black specks are fine… Only you will notice them.

But if the flaws get too large, and too obvious (you can see them across the room), then they will take away from the beauty and sparkle of the stone. This is why I advise not buying I2 or I3 clarity diamonds. Stick with I1 or higher and your diamonds will look fine.

Again, I1 clarity will have flaws that you can see with the bare eye. But, in the ear, and with most carat weights, people will never see a thing. But they will notice big, beautiful, white, sparkly stones.

Now you know what to look for.

1 carat diamond studs are the best carat weight. They are the perfect size for ears and you can wear them forever.

A great example of the type of diamond earrings I’m talking about is shown below.

1.00 carat diamonds studs (total weight), with an I1 clarity, F color (awesome), all set in 14k white gold.

Now these are some great looking earrings.

Don’t you deserve a wonderful pair of diamond studs today? ;)

If you’re buying a pair of diamond earrings, like diamond studs (see image right), does it matter what the clarity of those stones are?
