    \nSo you don’t get yourself in Trouble!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nFigure out what Monetary Range Feels Comfortable to you. Jewelry Stores usually Suggest around 2 Months Salary<\/strong>, but it all Depends on what you can really Afford to Spend after all your other Bills are Paid.<\/p>\n

    You Still Need to Eat!<\/h2>\n

    \nSo what ever you do, don’t over do it<\/strong>. You can always get something a Tad Smaller now, and Upgrade Later in Life.<\/p>\n

    \nSet yourself a Range (like $2,000 – $3,000<\/strong>), and Stick with it!<\/p>\n

    \nThat way the Salesperson Doesn’t Sweet Talk you into Spending $6,000<\/strong> on a Ring that you don’t have.<\/p>\n

    Setting Limits Work!<\/h2>\n

    \nPlus, it also gives you a Bargaining Chip<\/strong>. You can tell the Salesperson “I only have $3,000 to Spend!<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

    \nThat way you both know what you’re in for.<\/p>\n

    3) Take a Quick Course in the 4C’s<\/h2>\n

    \nYes, there is No Beating around the Bush with this one. Diamonds are Priced and sold by the Standards and Grades known as the 4C’s<\/a>: Cut<\/a>, Color<\/a>, Clarity<\/a> and Carat Weight<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    You MUST Learn These!<\/h2>\n

    \nIf you Want to Buy the Best Quality of Diamond you can Afford, then you must get Familiar with the 4C’s BEFORE<\/strong> you Step Foot into any Jewelry Store!<\/p>\n

    \nI can’t say this enough<\/strong>. If you don’t take some Time to Read and Learn, you’ll probably end up with a Low Quality Diamond at a Cheap Price, and you’re Girlfriend will look at her Ring and say “My Diamond has a Huge Black Spot in the Center of the Stone!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

    You don’t want to Hear that!<\/h2>\n

    \nSo do your Homework!<\/strong> <\/p>\n

    \nTake a Quick Course in the 4C’s to give you some Basic over all Knowledge. And wouldn’t you know it, I Wrote an Entire Post on just that! It’s a Great Post called The 4C’s in 4 Minutes!<\/a> Read it, it will Help! <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nLearn the 4C’s, so when the Salesperson says “This is an GIA, I2, F, Certified Diamond with Strong Fluorescence<\/strong>“, you’ll know what they’re Talking about.<\/p>\n

    4) Shop Around, Compare Quality & Prices<\/h2>\n

    \nWhat ever you do, Shop around Before you make any Big Buying Decisions. <\/p>\n

    \nShop the Mall Jewelry Stores<\/strong>, and Shop the Independent Jewelry Stores<\/strong> in your Area. Check them all out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nI suggest you going to at least 4-5 Stores<\/strong> in your Area to really see all the Different Styles, Designs, Prices, Policies and Personalities out there.<\/p>\n

    \nThis may Feel Overwhelming<\/strong>, and you may Hear Conflicting Views (which is why you want a Quick 4C’s Course<\/strong>), but it will give you a really Good Idea of what your Options are, what’s Hot<\/strong>, what’s on Sale, and what Guarantees and Warranties Different Companies have.<\/p>\n

    \nYou’ll find out if you Feel Comfortable with a Store, the People, the Pressure they put on you… If you look at Enough Merchandise, you’ll see what Goods they Sell, and if their Prices are Average, or Way Over Priced!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Compare similar Styles and Take Notes!<\/h2>\n

    \nWrite it all down on a Tablet or the Back of a Business Card.<\/p>\n

    \nI would Spend a Good Day or Two (or Week<\/strong>) going all over Town to see they Offer. <\/p>\n

    \nDo some Rings Sparkle more than others? Are the People Friendly? Do they Pounce on you the Second you Enter the Door? Does one Store’s Prices seem Too Good to be True?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Trust your Gut!<\/h2>\n

    \nOnce you have a Better Grasp of the Situation, Check Online<\/strong> and Compare Styles and Quality there as well.<\/p>\n

    \nI Suggest Heading over to Blue Nile<\/a> or James Allen<\/a> for Loose Diamond Deals! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

    5) Break Up The Diamonds<\/h2>\n

    \nLet’s Face it, a One Carat Diamond is Expensive!<\/strong> (But, it is the Dream Diamond Carat Weight, isn’t it?<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

    \nA One Carat Total Weight Diamond on the other hand, isn’t!<\/p>\n

    \nWhy is this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nBecause one single Diamond ALWAYS Costs more<\/strong> than the Same Carat Weight Broken up into much Smaller Stones.<\/p>\n

    \nLook at the two Diamond Rings below to see what I mean…<\/p>\n

    \n\"Carats<\/p>\n

    \nIf you Buy a Loose Diamond (One Stone<\/strong>), you’ll be in for an Average Price Range of $3,000 – $7,000<\/strong> (Depending on the Quality<\/strong>). That’s a Good Chunk of Money just for the Stone itself (and then you still have to buy the Mounting<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    \nThe Most Affordable Engagement Rings<\/strong> are the Rings with a Smaller Center Stone, but with many more Diamonds around it to really create a Visual Impact, and to make it “POP<\/strong>” and Sparkle like Crazy (Like these Halo Mountings HERE<\/a> and these Pave Mountings HERE!<\/a>).<\/p>\n

    \nOne of my Favorite Engagement Ring Designers<\/strong> is Scott Kay<\/a> (lots of Jewelry Stores Sell Scott Kay Engagement Rings). I just LOVE the Filigree!<\/strong> They have Rings in all Different Styles and Designs. Rings with Big Center Stones, to ones with Smaller Carat Weights and lots of Fancy Work. <\/p>\n

    6) Buy White Gold vs Platinum<\/h2>\n

    \nWhite Gold was made as a Substitute for Platinum. Platinum is Very Durable, Very Rare, and Very, Very Expensive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nIt generally Runs from anywhere from 3-5 times the Price of Gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nThat’s why I say, if she likes “White Metals<\/strong>“, Buy her 14k White Gold! <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nWhite Gold is Bright, White and Adds Much Sparkle<\/strong> and Brilliance to any Diamonds or Gems. It’s just a Big Blur of Stunning Eye-Candy!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    It’s the Perfect Metal of Choice!<\/h2>\n

    \n\"Gold<\/a><\/p>\n

    7) Stick To An Affordable Clarity Range<\/h2>\n

    \nHere’s something that most people don’t know… If you set an SI1 Clarity Diamond<\/strong> side by side with a Flawless Diamond<\/strong> (the Best Clarity there Is<\/strong>), you Won’t Notice any Difference with the Naked Eye!<\/p>\n

    NONE!<\/h2>\n

    \nThe Stones will Look IDENTICAL!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nThis is because any Diamond Clarity SI1 or Higher (FL, IF, VVS, VS<\/strong>) all have Microscopic Inclusions ONLY!<\/strong> You can only<\/strong> see these tiny Flaws and Imperfections under 10x Magnification<\/strong> (what they use to Grade Diamonds with). You’ll need a Jeweler’s Loupe<\/a> or a Microscope<\/a> to see the Flaws.<\/p>\n

    So to the Eye, they will Look the Same!<\/h2>\n

    \nThat’s why Buying SI1 Clarity is Smart and makes Sense!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nYou won’t be Spending Good Money on something you can’t see<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nIf you really want to Spend that Cash on something that does make a Visual Difference, put it into Color. Buy a Colorless Diamond (D-E-F)<\/strong> and it will give you a much Whiter and Brighter Diamond!<\/p>\n

    \nClarity<\/strong> = SI1<\/strong>, Color<\/strong> = D, E<\/strong> or F<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    As so…<\/h2>\n

    \n\"Princess<\/a><\/p>\n

    8) View With The Eye, Then With The Scope<\/h2>\n

    \nWhat are we looking for? SPARKLE!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nThis is what I call the Eye-Test<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nEvery Diamond is Different, and every Diamond looks Different and Reacts to Light Differently.<\/p>\n

    Let your Eyes be the Judge!<\/h2>\n

    \nLook for a Diamond that Sparkles and Dances in the Light. You want the Diamond to have Lots of Life<\/strong>. You want it to Shine like a Thousand Stars in the Sky.<\/p>\n

    \nThat’s the Most Awesome thing about Diamonds… The Brilliance, Fire and Life of the Stones.<\/p>\n

    \nAnd what Causes this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    THE CUT!<\/h2>\n

    \nA Well Cut Diamond Affects the Sparkle and Beauty of the Diamond<\/strong> more than any of the other 4C’s.<\/p>\n

    \nSo Strive for a Cut Grade<\/strong> (as listed on a GIA Diamond Report<\/a>) of Excellent<\/strong> or Very Good<\/strong>. That way, you’ll be sure to get a Diamond that Really Dazzles.<\/p>\n

    DON’T SKIMP ON CUT!<\/h2>\n

    \nLook for Excellent or Very Good<\/strong>, and while you’re at it, check what the Symmetry<\/strong> and Polish<\/strong> says as well. If you truly want the most Sparkle you can get out of any Diamond, make sure they have Excellent<\/strong> or Very Good<\/strong> Grades as well.<\/p>\n

    \nI would also only Trust GIA or AGS Diamond Reports<\/strong> (known as Certificates<\/strong>). They are Highly Accurate <\/strong>and Highly Recommended<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Cut IS the most important 4C there is!<\/h2>\n

    \nThis is where they list them on a GIA Diamond Report<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

    \n\"GIA<\/p>\n

    9) Don’t Get It Sized Or Engraved<\/h2>\n

    \nFatal Mistake #1<\/strong>… Getting your Ring Personalized Before you give it to her<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nHere’s a Fact<\/strong>: 99%<\/strong> of ALL<\/strong> Jewelry Stores will NOT Return an Engagement Ring<\/strong> if it’s been Sized, Engraved, Custom Designed, or Custom Ordered!<\/p>\n

    \nYou Engrave it, you KEEP it!<\/a><\/p>\n

    \nWhile it Sounds like a Great Idea to have it Sized Ahead of Time (so when you give it to her it Fits), it’s NOT!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nWhat if she Doesn’t Like it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nWhat if it Doesn’t Look Right on her Finger?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nWhat if she Wants Something Different?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    What if she says “NO”?<\/h2>\n

    \nThese are all Good Points to Consider, and something as Simple as a Standard Ring Sizing can certainly Mess Things Up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nPlus, when Guys get a Ring Sized, they are usually Just Guessing at the Size<\/strong>. “If it Fits on my Pinky, it’ll Fit her!<\/strong>” Not Cool! That Rarely Works, and Judging from one of her other Rings doesn’t really Work Either. All Rings Fit Differently<\/strong>. Some are Top Heavy, others Wider, some are Comfort Fit<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

    \nChances are it will be Wrong!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nThe Ring still won’t Fit, and then you’ll have to Pay MORE<\/strong> to get it Re-Sized again (The First Sizing is usually always FREE!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

    So DON’T get it Sized!<\/h2>\n

    \nAnd DON’T get it Engraved… Yet!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nYou can Deal with these things After<\/strong> you give her the Engagement Ring, and After<\/strong> she says “YES<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

    \nTake her to the Jewelry Store to get it Fitted. And that’s also when you can Slip the Sales Rep a Message that has the Engraving that you want Inside the Band. Whether it’s something Romantic like “All My Love<\/strong>“, “Hugs & Kisses<\/strong>” “Love Richard<\/strong>” (Yes, you can use my Name), or “6-1-96<\/strong>” (the Day you Met).<\/p>\n

    \nYou could also put something silly like “Pookie Bear<\/strong>“, “I Love You More Than Chocolate<\/strong>” or “Tickle Me Elmo<\/strong>“… Just for Kicks. <\/p>\n

    \n\"Don't<\/p>\n

    \nWhatever it is, have it done when they Size her Ring. Then when you Pick it up Later, it will be a Wonderful Surprise!<\/strong> “Awwwwwwwwww!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

    10) What’s The Return Policy?<\/h2>\n

    \nSome Jewelry Stores have a Very Limited Return Window. Like 3 Days, or 7 Days… Some Stores give you up to 3 Months<\/strong>, some may give you NONE<\/strong>! <\/p>\n

    Find out BEFORE you Buy!<\/h2>\n

    \n\"What's<\/p>\n

    “How Long?”<\/h2>\n

    Knowing how long you have to Return an Engagement Ring can Change when and where you give it to her. <\/p>\n

    \nIf you’re buying the Engagement Ring in July<\/strong>, and Don’t Plan on Giving it to her until Christmas<\/strong>, then Chances are, you will be Way Past the Point of Returns.<\/p>\n

    \nSo if she Doesn’t Like it, or if you Break up in November… You just Bought yourself a Very Expensive Pinky Ring!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nFind out How Long you have to Return the Bridal Ring. See if there are any Restocking Fees<\/strong> or Penalties<\/strong> involved.<\/p>\n

    \nYou don’t want to be Stuck with an $8,000 Diamond Ring that you Don’t Need (You may get $2,000 for it on Ebay<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    \nP.S.<\/strong> You can always Keep the Ring in the Store’s Layaway Program<\/strong>. Stores usually have one. Keep it in there until it’s Closer to the Time when you’ll give it to her.<\/p>\n

    \nDoing that will also Keep her from Accidentally Finding the Ring<\/strong> in your Glove Compartment Box.<\/p>\n

    \nCheck with the Jeweler and see what your Options are<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nJust in case!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nA Couple of other Suggestions, Pointers, Tips and Advise…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    A) Microscope Everything!<\/h2>\n

    \nSee what the Diamond looks like Close up and what the Flaws look like Magnified 10x<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    \nUse the Microscope<\/a> and Check out all the Stones<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    \nLook for Huge Flaws, Inclusions, Black Spots<\/strong>, Cracks, Chips and Fractures.<\/p>\n

    \nYou never know<\/strong>. Sometimes you can Miss these things with your Naked Eye. <\/p>\n

    Use the Scope and Scope it out!<\/h2>\n

    \n\"Microscope<\/p>\n

    B) Pay Cash!<\/h2>\n

    Don’t Charge It!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nPaying Cash Saves you Interest Charges, Late Fees and Monthly Payments. Plus, if you Miss just One Payment<\/strong>, or are Late on a Finance Plan, it can Ruin any “Interest Free Financing Plans<\/strong>” they have, and Add on HUGE Interest Rates<\/strong> at the Maximum Amount Allowed by Law. OUCH!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Paying Cash can also get you a Better Deal!<\/h2>\n

    \nMany Jewelers like Cash better because they Don’t Pay Credit Card Processing Fees, and they also Need Good Cash Flow to Stay in Business and Buy More Rings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nAsk the Jeweler<\/strong> “Can I Get this Cheaper if I Pay Cash?<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

    C) Go All Out For The Proposal!<\/h2>\n

    \nTake her on a Trip. Go to the Beach. Propose at an Amusement Park<\/strong> at the Top of a Ferris Wheel<\/strong>…<\/p>\n
