You don&#8217;t want to break the band, cover, or crush the crystal.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>SNAP!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Removing watch links:<\/h2>\n<p>\nA <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00JPXW0N8\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">small screwdriver<\/a>, or a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2bN2gou\">watch link remover<\/a> is needed if you want to add links or remove links from your watch.<\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s fairly easy to do&#8230; <strong>um, most times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nWatch links will normally be put together with 2 different types of fasteners: <strong>pins and screws.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>See below&#8230; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band.jpg\" alt=\"Removing Watch Links from Band!\" title=\"Removing Watch Links from Band!\" width=\"502\" height=\"500\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Removing-Watch-Links-From-Band-120x120.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Screws are the easiest to handle<\/h2>\n<p>\nYou unscrew them (<strong>counter-clockwise<\/strong>) and slide them out.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Pins are a little bit more tricky <\/strong>since you&#8217;ll need a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2cgwaDb\">watch pin remover<\/a> to gently <strong>push the pins out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nThis takes a little practice, and a lot of patience so you don&#8217;t break the pusher, or bend the watch pin.<\/p>\n<p>\nI&#8217;ve been doing watch links for over 23 years, and every now and then<strong> I still break the tool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>It happens!<\/h2>\n<p>\nSometimes links are tough and won&#8217;t budge. Knowing the exact amount of pressure and force is <strong>crucial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut, if you <strong>line up the tool properly<\/strong>, and the pin pushes through the hole perfectly <strong>straight<\/strong>, you should have no problems.<\/p>\n<p>\nYou will also need some <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B000SNBC74\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">pliers<\/a> to <strong>pull the pin out <\/strong>the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p>\nOnce the pins and links are removed, you&#8217;ll need to gently take away or add what you need, and then put the watch back together again by <strong>pounding the pin back into place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nA <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00ZOEJ9QI\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">watch hammer and watch block<\/a> is perfect for this job.<\/p>\n<p>\nLearn more in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/watch-tools-and-how-to-use-them\/\">watch tools post here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nWhen it comes to links, you&#8217;ll never know if they&#8217;ll be easy or hard. Every watch is different, and sometimes the cheaper the watch gets, the more difficult the links are to remove.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut, if it <strong>saves you $25<\/strong> from going to the jeweler, then it&#8217;s well worth the price to pay.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Unknotting chains:<\/h2>\n<p>\nFine chains knot up easily. Some knot up so quickly that just by looking at them ties them up in a bunch.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo grab <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B000PSFC46\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">2 straight sewing pins<\/a> and <strong>that knot will be history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nWhatever you do, <strong>don&#8217;t pull on the chain. <\/strong>You&#8217;ll only make the knot tighter and harder to unravel.<\/p>\n<p>\nLay the chain down. Put one straight pin through a link and wiggle it to grab a hold. Jiggle it a tad to loosen that area. <\/p>\n<p>\nNow <strong>put the other straight pin through the knot on the opposite side<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nWiggle them some more as you draw them apart. <\/p>\n<p><h2>The knot will eventually pull free&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/learn-how-to-unknot-a-chain\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain.jpg\" alt=\"How to Unknot a Chain!\" title=\"How to Unknot a Chain!\" width=\"502\" height=\"500\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/How-To-Unknot-A-Chain-120x120.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nWith a little luck and a little wiggling, you should be able to loosen the knot enough to untie the chain.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Problem solved!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Removing kinks from chains:<\/h2>\n<p>\nGenerally, the types of chains that kink up are the flat chains, or chains that lay flat.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd out of all of them,<strong> the number one chain to kink is: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Herringbone chains<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Herringbone chains<\/strong> are thin and flat, with tiny sections and small pieces that weave in and out of each other. It gives the chain a little bend and shape so it lays nicely on your neck.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chains-That-Kink-The-Most.jpg\" alt=\"Chains that Kink the Most!\" title=\"Chains that Kink the Most!\" width=\"502\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chains-That-Kink-The-Most.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chains-That-Kink-The-Most-300x120.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nSadly, when you bend a flat chain like this beyond the bending point,<strong> it kinks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>So how do you remove kinks from herringbones?<\/h2>\n<p>\nPatience, persistence, and <strong>luck.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nYou have to grab a section of the herringbone closely on either side of the kinked area. <\/p>\n<p>\nThen gently, <strong>oh so gently<\/strong>, rotate the sections around, snapping them back into place one link at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\nDon&#8217;t bend or rotate too much,<strong> you don&#8217;t want to bend the links further<\/strong>. Just nice gentle movements and<strong> a tiny bit of force<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe motions of your hands should rotate in the same direction: <strong>clockwise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nRotate the links, moving them slightly up and down and side to side as the links maneuver back into place. <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Sometimes it&#8217;s easy<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><h2>Other times it&#8217;s maddening.<\/h2>\n<p>\nOften you have to physically turn and manipulate each link one by one. But the good thing is,<strong> it can be done<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nOnce you get the kinks out, do note that <strong>it may be bumpy or loose in that area<\/strong>. That&#8217;s normal.<\/p>\n<p>\nAfter all, you just took a flat object, twisted it up, and flattened it out again. <strong>Damage may show.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nWhat you can do is to lay the herringbone flat on a cloth with another cloth above it, and then <strong>gently roll the bumpy section flat again<\/strong> with a pen, pole, can, or any other round tubular object. <\/p>\n<p>\nThis helps give the chain a nice smoother appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\nSadly,<strong> there is nothing you can do with the looseness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>It will always be a little looser<\/strong> there and it will probably <strong>kink easier<\/strong> in that same spot again.<\/p>\n<p>\nIf it keeps kinking, or if it&#8217;s too tied up and can&#8217;t be fixed, a jeweler can <strong>solder that spot<\/strong>, or better yet, <strong>cut the chain into sections and make bracelets<\/strong> out of them.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Herringbones are a pain.<\/h2>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s a good thing that <strong>herringbones aren&#8217;t very popular anymore<\/strong>. They&#8217;ve seen their light of day.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Tightening jump rings<\/h2>\n<p>\nChains and bracelets often have unsoldered links holding them together.<\/p>\n<p>\nIf the chain gets pulled or caught, <strong>those links will stretch and open up<\/strong>. It could cause your chain, bracelet or pendant to <strong>fall or get lost.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nThe great news is, tightening these links and jump rings <strong>is pretty simple stuff.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nJust grab yourself <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B000SN9Z78\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">2 sets of long nose pliers<\/a> and they&#8217;ll be fixed in a second.<\/p>\n<p>\nGrab one side of the link near the opening with one of the pliers, thread the dangling links or parts of the bracelet through the ring, and with the other set of pliers, then close the ring back up.<\/p>\n<p>\nYour goal is to join the ends together by turning one hand clockwise and the other hand counter clockwise.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Move the ends together until they are snug<\/strong>, closed and tight. <strong>As such<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Fixing-Link-Chains-And-Bracelets.jpg\" alt=\"Fixing Links Chains and Bracelets!\" title=\"Fixing Links Chains and Bracelets!\" width=\"502\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Fixing-Link-Chains-And-Bracelets.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Fixing-Link-Chains-And-Bracelets-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>You don&#8217;t want to leave any slight gaps in the ring<\/strong>, for the chain may slide through. <strong>Get it right, and tight. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nIf the link gets too deformed or looks bad, simply <strong>remove that link<\/strong> and reconnect the rest of the chain.<\/p>\n<p>\nIt may be a link shorter, <strong>but at least it&#8217;s wearable. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Changing clasps:<\/h2>\n<p>\nClasps are usually connected with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B000SN2JWQ\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">unsoldered jump rings<\/a> like shown below. And just like you would tighten a jump ring, these would be no different.<\/p>\n<p>\nUnhook the <strong>broken clasp<\/strong> by using the pliers to open the ring just large enough to slide the clasp free.<\/p>\n<p>\nNow <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YY8D1h\">purchase a new clasp<\/a> either at your local hobby store (like <strong>Michaels<\/strong>), or order them online at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YY8D1h\">Amazon<\/a>. Put the new clasp on facing the same way as the old one did (so you can hook the chain properly), and tighten the ring back up again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Changing-Broken-Clasps.jpg\" alt=\"Changing Broken Clasps!\" title=\"Changing Broken Clasps!\" width=\"502\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Changing-Broken-Clasps.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Changing-Broken-Clasps-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nThere are <strong>two main types of clasps<\/strong> on the market: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YXanI5\">spring ring clasps<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3P4Tab0\">lobster claw clasps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Spring-Ring-Clasps-Lobster-Clasps.jpg\" alt=\"Spring Ring Clasps and Lobster Clasps!\" title=\"Spring Ring Clasps and Lobster Clasps!\" width=\"502\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Spring-Ring-Clasps-Lobster-Clasps.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Spring-Ring-Clasps-Lobster-Clasps-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nJust note that unless you have that jump ring soldered closed, it could open up and pull free again.<\/p>\n<p><h2>All good things to consider.<\/h2>\n<p>\nI usually recommend having <strong>jump rings soldered<\/strong> so you don&#8217;t take the chance of Llosing your valuable pendant.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Removing watch crystal scratches<\/h2>\n<p>\nDepending on the type of crystal that you have on your watch, <strong>you may be able to remove scratches from it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nIf the face is plastic, as a lot are, <strong>you&#8217;re in luck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nThey sell <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Ekm5TJ\">watch crystal polishing cloths<\/a> specifically made to<strong> rub scratches out of crystals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nThis only works if the face is <strong>plastic<\/strong>. They don&#8217;t work on glass or sapphire crystals.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Ekm5TJ\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Polishing-Watch-Crystals.jpg\" alt=\"Polishing Scratches out of Watch Crystals!\" title=\"Polishing Scratches out of Watch Crystals!\" width=\"502\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Polishing-Watch-Crystals.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Polishing-Watch-Crystals-300x120.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s simple and easy to do. Just follow the instructions that come with the cloth, and your crystal will be <strong>scratch free.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Re-gluing loose pearls:<\/h2>\n<p>\nYes, you can re-glue loose pearls from rings, earrings, pendants and more. All you need is the proper tools and glue (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3EmaALj\">jeweler&#8217;s epoxy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\nPearls are glued onto a post (or peg), that&#8217;s what holds them in place.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut before you just slap any old glue on,<strong> there are some things you need to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Remove the old glue first<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Carefully re-glue the pearl<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply pressure until dry<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nTake a closer Look&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Reglueing-Pearls-In-Jewelry.jpg\" alt=\"Reglueing Pearls in Jewelry and Rings!\" title=\"Reglueing Pearls in Jewelry and Rings!\" width=\"502\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Reglueing-Pearls-In-Jewelry.jpg 502w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Reglueing-Pearls-In-Jewelry-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>1) Remove the old glue first<\/h2>\n<p>\nGrab an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00004Z2UB\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">exacto knife<\/a> or some similar sharp item, and gently break the old glue off the bottom of the pearl. <strong>DON&#8217;T SCRATCH THE PEARL<\/strong> or <strong>SCRAPE ACROSS THE SURFACE! <\/strong>They are very delicate and will <strong>mar or scratch easily.<\/strong> Just gently pry the old glue away.<\/p>\n<p>\nDo the same thing with the peg or post. Clear off all old debris so the pearl has <strong>a nice clean contact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>2) Carefully re-glue the pearl<\/h2>\n<p>\nCarefully <strong>mix up the epoxy <\/strong>as the instructions explain. Then use a toothpick or some similar item to dab some glue back into the pearl hole and around the base.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Do the same with the peg or post<\/strong>. Put a little on and around the peg and bottom.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Don&#8217;t put too much<\/strong>, because <strong>you don&#8217;t want the glue to push out the seams<\/strong> and cover your beautiful jewelry.<\/p>\n<p>\nJust put enough so it will <strong>secure the pearl in place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nNow push the pearl back on the peg as far as you can and&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>3) Apply pressure until dry<\/h2>\n<p>\nOnce you push the pearl onto the post, <strong>keep steady pressure on the pearl<\/strong>. Hold it down with your fingers for a couple of minutes. <\/p>\n<p>\nJewelers often use a little <strong>vice clamp<\/strong> that holds the pearl for a bit. But if you hold it with constant pressure, it should be enough to fasten your pearl for good.<\/p>\n<p>\nKeep it there until the glue hardens or dries enough so <strong>the pearl doesn&#8217;t rise off the post<\/strong>. A clean tight fit is the goal. <\/p>\n<p>\nOnce glued,<strong> set it aside for a day or two<\/strong> until it completely dries inside. <\/p>\n<p>\nIf you see any excess glue escape, try to wipe it up before it dries on the nacre.<\/p>\n<p>\nKeep in mind, <strong>pearls are organic <\/strong>and if you get them wet, they will expand and can come loose. <strong>Don&#8217;t wear them in the shower or the pool. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nGluing pearls is easy, you just need a steady hand and a little bit of rressure. :)<\/p>\n<p><h2>Straightening bent earring posts:<\/h2>\n<p>\nHave a bent earring post?<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Well you&#8217;re in luck<\/strong>. All you need to fix it is a pair of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B000SN9Z78\/?tag=jewelry-secrets-20\">flat nosed pliers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nYou can straighten out a post in the blink of an eye, as long as you don&#8217;t <strong>snap the post off <\/strong>in the process. <strong>:( <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nHold the earring securely in one hand, and grab the post with the pliers.
