The other day, I’m waiting on a guy<\/strong> who is buying his girlfriend a Citrine ring<\/a> (birthstone for November<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

He’s SOLD<\/h2>\n

\nI take him up to the counter to ring it up, and he says he wants to get it sized<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nI ask him “What size do you need?<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nHe says “I think it’s either a 7 or 7 1\/2<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

\nI respond “We can size it, no problem. But you don’t know the exact size for sure?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

“No,” he says…<\/h2>\n

\n“Her sister guessed on the size because they wear each other’s rings<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

“I see…”<\/h2>\n

\nIt sounds plausible…<\/strong><\/p>\n

BUT…<\/h2>\n

\n“Do you know which finger she’ll wear this ring on?<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nHe looks at me and shakes his head<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n“Because” I go on “All fingers are different sizes<\/strong>, plus each hand is also a different size as well. Her dominant hand will be 1\/2 size larger than the other<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

\n“Really?<\/strong>” He laughs. “I didn’t know that<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

Not many people do!<\/h2>\n

\n“This is what I’d suggest” I tell him. “Don’t get the ring sized yet<\/strong>. Wait on the sizing until she gets the ring.”<\/p>\n

And this is a very good point for all…<\/h2>\n

\nBecause “waiting<\/strong>” to get it sized is actually quite smart and beneficial<\/strong> for many reasons:<\/p>\n

\nLet’s look at them…<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) The ring makes a big difference<\/h2>\n

\nThe size you make the ring could be wrong<\/strong>, even if you know her exact size. All rings and bands will fit and feel differently on the finger. Some are thinner<\/strong>, some thicker<\/strong>, some comfort fit<\/strong>, some tapered<\/strong>, some hollowed out<\/strong>, some are top heavy<\/strong>… They can all fit a little bit looser or tighter<\/strong> depending on the actual design. <\/p>\n

\nSo even if one ring is a size 7, another could be a 6 1\/2 or an 8<\/strong>. You just don’t know until you have a professional look at her finger and size it with ring sizer tools<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2) You could guess wrong<\/h2>\n

\nJewelers will usually provide the “first<\/strong>” ring sizing for “free<\/strong>“. Which means, you pay nothing to get it sized<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nBut, if you guessed wrong<\/strong> or sized it wrong, and it had to be redone or resized<\/strong>, then that second sizing will cost you<\/strong>. You <\/strong>will have to pay for that, and often it’s not cheap.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIt could run you anywhere from $25 – $100<\/strong> or more depending on the size needed<\/strong>, the thickness <\/strong>of the ring, and the type of metal<\/strong> used (Silver, Gold, Platinum).<\/p>\n

3) She may not like the ring<\/h2>\n

\nGuys don’t think about this, but…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nShe may mot like it<\/strong>. She may want something different<\/strong>, or want to return it<\/strong>. Heck, you could even break Up<\/strong> before she gets it…<\/p>\n

\nEither way you look at it, if the ring has been sized already, many times this alteration will “void” the return policy!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nYou could be stuck with the ring all because you wanted to size it beforehand.<\/strong><\/p>\n

OUCH!<\/h2>\n

\nSo that’s why I always recommend “Don’t get it sized before she gets it.<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nPlus, the more you size a ring up or down, the weaker the shank (band) becomes<\/strong>. So I would hold off<\/strong> and advise you to “wait<\/strong>“…<\/p>\n

JUST IN CASE!<\/h2>\n

\nWait for the sizing to see if she likes it<\/strong> and wants to keep it<\/strong>. Then bring her into the store to get it fitted properly by a pro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

No more guessing!<\/h2>\n

\n(Because “Her ring almost fits on my pinky!<\/strong>” Doesn’t count!)<\/p>\n

\nGuessing on the size can get very, very costly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And nobody likes that.<\/h2>\n
