\nIt’s a Moh’s Scale of Hardness Testing Kit<\/a> (I didn’t even know they made them), that features 10 Rocks and Minerals<\/strong> that Make up and Define the Moh’s Scale of Hardness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From 1-10, the Moh’s Scale is:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
1:<\/td>\nTalc<\/strong><\/td>\n6:<\/td>\nFeldspar<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
2:<\/td>\nGypsum<\/strong><\/td>\n7:<\/td>\nQuartz<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
3:<\/td>\nCalcite<\/strong><\/td>\n8:<\/td>\nTopaz<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
4:<\/td>\nFluorite<\/strong><\/td>\n9:<\/td>\nCorundum<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
5:<\/td>\nApatite<\/strong><\/td>\n10:<\/td>\nDiamond<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

\nThis Kit may not Feature Expensive Stones<\/strong> like Beryl or Topaz, but they will have Minerals that are Equal to their Hardness<\/strong> for Testing Purposes.<\/p>\n

So What Exactly is the Moh’s Scale?<\/h2>\n

\nIt’s a Scale that Rates Stones, Rocks, and Minerals from Hardest to Softest <\/strong>(Which is the Resistance in which a Smooth Surface can be Scratched by another). On this Scale, Diamond is the Hardest<\/strong> Mineral, which is a 10. Talc is the Softest<\/strong>, being a #1.<\/p>\n

\nAny Mineral that’s Lower on the Scale can be Scratched<\/strong> by a Mineral Higher on the Scale. So a 9 (Corundum) will ALWAYS <\/strong>be able to Scratch an 8 (As well as a 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1).<\/p>\n

\n\"Mohs<\/a><\/p>\n

\nDiamond (Which is the Hardest Natural Substance on Earth<\/strong>, and IS Included in this Kit) can Scratch Every Stone there is, and it’s the only Rock that can Scratch another Diamond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nI Tested this Kit with a Couple of the Stones<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nRubbing 2 against 6, you can clearly see the Softer Stone (2) Wear Down and Scratch off onto the more Durable Stone<\/strong> (6).<\/p>\n

The Same with 1 against 8…<\/h2>\n

\n\"Gemstone<\/a><\/p>\n

\n1 Scratched off into Dust and it didn’t bother #8 in the least!<\/strong> :)<\/p>\n

\nThat’s how the Scratch Test Works and it Proves the Moh’s Scale of Hardness Theory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Put it to Use<\/h2>\n

\nJewelers <\/strong>can use a Kit like this (As well as Students<\/strong>, Teachers, Rock Collectors<\/strong>) to Test the Hardness of Stones<\/strong> and to Explain what the Scale is, and WHY it’s Important<\/strong> to Gems and their Ability to Last and Hold up well in Jewelry.<\/p>\n

\nGems like Ruby and Sapphire<\/strong> (Corundum – 9) are Very Durable, Scratch Resistant<\/strong>, and will Normally last you a Lifetime.<\/p>\n

\nOther Stones like Emerald <\/strong>(7.5-8) are Softer and may Show Signs of Wear and Tear<\/strong> over the Years.<\/p>\n

\nAnd still, other Gems like Pearls<\/strong>, which are a 2.5 on the list, are Quite Soft and can Scratch easily<\/strong> if not Protected!<\/p>\n
