They will still double check their findings with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3PULoki\">diamond tester<\/a> (which also tests for the man-made stone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/what-is-moissanite-is-it-a-diamond\/\">moissanite<\/a>), but that doesn&#8217;t help you much when you write in <strong>inquiring<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><h2>So either you drive yourself to a local jewelry store.<\/h2>\n<p>\nOr, there are some simple ways to <strong>tell if your stone is diamond<\/strong>, or something else.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Let&#8217;s take a peek.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Here&#8217;s how to tell if a diamond is fake or real:<\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Breath on the Stone<\/li>\n<li>Look for Inclusions<\/li>\n<li>Look for Rainbows<\/li>\n<li>Read a Newspaper<\/li>\n<li>Touch the Stone<\/li>\n<li>Check the Mounting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Now let&#8217;s dive in&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>1) Breath on the Stone<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Seriously!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nBreath on the stone and see <strong>how fast the steam clears<\/strong>. If it dissipates almost instantly, <strong>it&#8217;s probably real<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nFake stones will stay <strong>foggy <\/strong>for a much longer time.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Breath-On-Stone.jpg\" alt=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Breath On Stone\" title=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Breath On Stone\" width=\"589\" height=\"570\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13828\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Breath-On-Stone.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Breath-On-Stone-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>2) Look for Inclusions<\/h2>\n<p>\nGrab yourself a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3QdaPiy\">10x jeweler&#8217;s loupe<\/a> (unless you&#8217;ve got <strong>bionic eyes<\/strong>), and view the stone at <strong>10x magnification<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nDo you see <strong>inclusions or flaws<\/strong> in the stone?<\/p>\n<p>\nThings like: <strong>Lines<\/strong>, cloudy areas, <strong>black spots<\/strong>, cracks, or <strong>pin-points?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Look-For-Inclusions.jpg\" alt=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Look For Inclusions\" title=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Look For Inclusions\" width=\"589\" height=\"495\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Look-For-Inclusions.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Look-For-Inclusions-300x252.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>If so, it&#8217;s probably real.<\/h2>\n<p>\nReal diamonds (<strong>99% of them<\/strong>) have flaws, and most of these, have flaws <strong>big enough to see with the bare eye<\/strong> (no loupe needed).<\/p>\n<p>\nSo if you see <strong>imperfections<\/strong>, it&#8217;s probably safe to say it&#8217;s <strong>the real deal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nFake stones are generally made in a laboratory and will be &#8220;<strong>flawless<\/strong>&#8221; (like a <strong>cubic zirconia<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\nPlus, almost <strong>all fake stones<\/strong> are <strong>pure white<\/strong> too! White-white, like bleach-white.<\/p>\n<p>\nIf the body color of the stone is blanched, <strong>it&#8217;s probably fake.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>3) Look for Rainbows<\/h2>\n<p>\nDiamonds, if cut well, will have a good mixture of both <strong>brilliance <\/strong>(white flashes of light), and <strong>fire <\/strong>(colored flashes of light).<\/p>\n<p>\nThis &#8220;<strong>fire<\/strong>&#8220;, which is also called &#8220;<strong>dispersion<\/strong>&#8220;, happens when light is bent at an angle (Which happens when light enters the stone and bounces across the pavilion &#8211; <strong>base of the diamond<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>And it&#8217;s a pretty wonderful sight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut there is one stone that exhibits even <strong>more rainbow colors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>In fact, a lot more.<\/h2>\n<p>\nCZ&#8217;s (<strong>cubic zirconia<\/strong>), are one of the few stones (and which are <strong>extremely popular as a cheap diamond knock-off<\/strong>) that have a higher <strong>density <\/strong>than a diamond (about <strong>1.7<\/strong> times more). Hence, it shows off <strong>MORE color<\/strong> than a diamond does. <\/p>\n<p>\nSo if a stone looks <strong>really colorful<\/strong>, it&#8217;s probably <strong>fake.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Look-For-Rainbows.jpg\" alt=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Look For Rainbows\" title=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Look For Rainbows\" width=\"589\" height=\"675\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Look-For-Rainbows.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Look-For-Rainbows-262x300.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>4) Read a Newspaper<\/h2>\n<p>\nPlace the stone in question face down on a <strong>newspaper or magazine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nNow, look through the pavilion and see if you can <strong>read the text<\/strong> clearly.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Read-A-Newspaper.jpg\" alt=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Read A Newspaper\" title=\"Real Or Fake Diamond Read A Newspaper\" width=\"589\" height=\"675\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Read-A-Newspaper.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Real-Or-Fake-Diamond-Read-A-Newspaper-262x300.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are able to <strong>read the fine print<\/strong> through the facets, chances are, <strong>the stone&#8217;s not real.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nFake stones are more <strong>glassy and transparent<\/strong> and the print will be easier to see and read.<\/p>\n<p>\nDiamonds are much harder to see through.<\/p>\n<p><h2>5) Touch the Stone<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Place your finger on top of the stone<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nDoes it feel <strong>warm to the touch?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nDiamonds have a very high <strong>thermal conductivity<\/strong> (which is what a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/46Fnu3P\">diamond tester<\/a> tests for). If the stones are cheap, it&#8217;ll usually get a cheap mounting as well.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo look to see what type of metal it is.
