I get emails all the time about people asking whether a stone is a real diamond or not<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd yes, it’s pretty impossible<\/strong> to tell from an email. :)<\/p>\n

\nMost jewelers can look at a stone, and for the most part quickly discern if it’s fake or not<\/strong>. They will still double check their findings with a diamond tester<\/a> (which also tests for the man-made stone moissanite<\/a>), but that doesn’t help you much when you write in inquiring<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

So either you drive yourself to a local jewelry store.<\/h2>\n

\nOr, there are some simple ways to tell if your stone is diamond<\/strong>, or something else.<\/p>\n

\nLet’s take a peek.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here’s how to tell if a diamond is fake or real:<\/h2>\n

  1. Breath on the Stone<\/li>\n
  2. Look for Inclusions<\/li>\n
  3. Look for Rainbows<\/li>\n
  4. Read a Newspaper<\/li>\n
  5. Touch the Stone<\/li>\n
  6. Check the Mounting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nNow let’s dive in…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1) Breath on the Stone<\/h2>\n

    \nSeriously!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nBreath on the stone and see how fast the steam clears<\/strong>. If it dissipates almost instantly, it’s probably real<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nFake stones will stay foggy <\/strong>for a much longer time.<\/p>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n

    2) Look for Inclusions<\/h2>\n

    \nGrab yourself a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a> (unless you’ve got bionic eyes<\/strong>), and view the stone at 10x magnification<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    \nDo you see inclusions or flaws<\/strong> in the stone?<\/p>\n

    \nThings like: Lines<\/strong>, cloudy areas, black spots<\/strong>, cracks, or pin-points?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n

    If so, it’s probably real.<\/h2>\n

    \nReal diamonds (99% of them<\/strong>) have flaws, and most of these, have flaws big enough to see with the bare eye<\/strong> (no loupe needed).<\/p>\n

    \nSo if you see imperfections<\/strong>, it’s probably safe to say it’s the real deal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nFake stones are generally made in a laboratory and will be “flawless<\/strong>” (like a cubic zirconia<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    \nPlus, almost all fake stones<\/strong> are pure white<\/strong> too! White-white, like bleach-white.<\/p>\n

    \nIf the body color of the stone is blanched, it’s probably fake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    3) Look for Rainbows<\/h2>\n

    \nDiamonds, if cut well, will have a good mixture of both brilliance <\/strong>(white flashes of light), and fire <\/strong>(colored flashes of light).<\/p>\n

    \nThis “fire<\/strong>“, which is also called “dispersion<\/strong>“, happens when light is bent at an angle (Which happens when light enters the stone and bounces across the pavilion – base of the diamond<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    \nAnd it’s a pretty wonderful sight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nBut there is one stone that exhibits even more rainbow colors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In fact, a lot more.<\/h2>\n

    \nCZ’s (cubic zirconia<\/strong>), are one of the few stones (and which are extremely popular as a cheap diamond knock-off<\/strong>) that have a higher density <\/strong>than a diamond (about 1.7<\/strong> times more). Hence, it shows off MORE color<\/strong> than a diamond does. <\/p>\n

    \nSo if a stone looks really colorful<\/strong>, it’s probably fake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n

    4) Read a Newspaper<\/h2>\n

    \nPlace the stone in question face down on a newspaper or magazine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nNow, look through the pavilion and see if you can read the text<\/strong> clearly.<\/p>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n

    If you are able to read the fine print<\/strong> through the facets, chances are, the stone’s not real.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nFake stones are more glassy and transparent<\/strong> and the print will be easier to see and read.<\/p>\n

    \nDiamonds are much harder to see through.<\/p>\n

    5) Touch the Stone<\/h2>\n

    \nPlace your finger on top of the stone<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    \nDoes it feel warm to the touch?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nDiamonds have a very high thermal conductivity<\/strong> (which is what a diamond tester<\/a> tests for). This means they feel warm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nOther stones that are fake, don’t have this lovely attribute, and they’ll feel cool, or cold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n

    6) Check the Mounting<\/h2>\n

    \nMost synthetic look-a-likes<\/strong> will NOT <\/strong>be set into precious metals like gold or platinum<\/strong>. If the stones are cheap, it’ll usually get a cheap mounting as well.<\/p>\n

    \nSo look to see what type of metal it is. If it’s 10k<\/strong> (.417), 14k <\/strong>(.585), 18k<\/strong> (.750), or Platinum <\/strong>(PLAT).<\/p>\n

    \nMost fakes will be set in plated mountings<\/strong> (base metal, which also feels very light-weight<\/strong>), silver, gold filled<\/strong> or gold plated.<\/p>\n

    Cheap Stones, Cheap Mountings.<\/h2>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n

    \nAnd lastly, the easiest way to tell<\/strong> if a diamond is fake or not:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The price<\/h2>\n

    \nIf a ring is selling for $79.00<\/strong> (like this huge ring here<\/a>), versus $5,499.00<\/strong> like this real diamond ring here<\/a>, then don’t even ask…<\/p>\n

    IT’S FAKE!<\/h2>\n

    \n\"Real<\/p>\n
