\nI see people at the jewelry store pass up opals because “It’s not my birthstone!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nMany feel that if you wear an opal, and it’s not your birthstone<\/strong>, you’ll be cursed and have bad luck.<\/p>\n

\nThey won’t even buy an opal<\/strong> for someone else if it’s not their official gemstone of the month.<\/p>\n

\nPeople are so superstitious, and this makes buying opals a very questionable purchase<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Who needs bad luck, right?<\/h2>\n

\nSo is there just <\/strong>to this myth? Are opals really cursed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let’s find out…<\/h2>\n

\nOpals have had a long hard life since the beginning of time. Fueled by rumors and old wives tales<\/strong>, these stones are both colorful and unique, but magical and evil as well. Or so they say<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nOpals actually started out as a “good luck charm<\/strong>“, and Caesars would give them to their wives to wear as Talismans. Romans loved them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt was often referred to as “cupid’s stone<\/strong>“, because of their clear complexion.<\/p>\n

\nGreeks even thought the stone came from heavens<\/strong>, and used it for prophecy and premonitions. <\/p>\n

\nOrientals described the stone as “the anchor of hope<\/strong>“…<\/p>\n

So where did it run amuck?<\/h2>\n

\nConfusion over the NAME…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThe name “opal<\/strong>” was accidentally linked to the word “ophals<\/strong>“, which meant “human eye<\/strong>“. But in reality “opal<\/strong>” was named after “opalus<\/strong>“, which meant “to heal the blind<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

\nClose in association<\/strong>, but this little disorientation brought huge consequences. <\/p>\n

\nFor this mishap caused people to believe that it was psychic<\/strong>, and that the EYE <\/strong>(did you see that movie?<\/a>) gave you abilities into the supernatural world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSome even thought that it would make you invisible to your enemies<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nThroughout history, opals have always brought intrigue and fascination, so will it give you teleportation powers<\/strong> as well? Some thought it would.<\/p>\n

Some believed it banished evil and cured eye-sight.<\/h2>\n

\nSome EYES even resembled a cat’s eye<\/strong> and Medieval Europeans believed that a glance upon the stone<\/strong> would bring ill-will. <\/p>\n

\nMany thought Witches used them in their craft<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nThe evil-eye made people sick. It killed crops<\/strong>. It sickened livestock. <\/p>\n

All coincidental?<\/h2>\n

\nI’m sure it was, people always want to find causes for failures and fatality… But hence, the eye was forever linked with dire omens<\/strong> and sinister malevolence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s crazy, because something named to be virtuous<\/strong>, turned ugly and dark over time. <\/p>\n

\nIt’s sad, because opals are beautiful, stunning, and vivid. Like lighting <\/strong>from the sky and glistening rainbows<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nIt is amazing to me, that even in this modern world<\/strong>, superstition still exists and folk lore legends abound. <\/p>\n

\nDoesn’t seem possible. I mean, the Ancient Romans thought of opal as the “Queen of Gemstones<\/strong>“!<\/p>\n

That’s some pretty high praise.<\/h2>\n

\nSome believed that the opal was the result of Zeus’ tears upon the ground<\/strong> after defeating the Titans. <\/p>\n

\nSo is it bad luck, and will it bring a foreshadowing of disaster<\/strong> to come?<\/p>\n

I’d say no.<\/h2>\n

\nI don’t believe in any superstitions: “walking under ladders<\/strong>“, “breaking mirrors<\/strong>“, or having a “black cat cross my path<\/strong>“…<\/p>\n

\nOpals are the birthstone of October<\/strong> (my birthstone).<\/p>\n

So it can’t be evil…<\/h2>\n

\nUnless you combine it with an evil eye, like this pendant below<\/a>…<\/p>\n

Then okay, maybe…<\/h2>\n

\nPersonally, I say buy <\/strong>opals, wear<\/strong> opals, love<\/strong> opals…<\/p>\n

Leave all the bad karma behind.<\/h2>\n

\nAnd if you do see a REAL evil eye<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Run like hell!<\/h2>\n

\nI mean, there’s truth to the saying:<\/strong><\/p>\n
