Is it safe to leave your diamonds or engagement ring<\/strong> at a jewelry store for sizing or repairs?<\/p>\n

Maybe, maybe not!<\/h2>\n

\nIt all depends on where you take it<\/strong>, and who works on your ring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIf you take your ring to a little hole in the wall<\/strong>, some jeweler down a back alley<\/strong> in the middle of no-where<\/strong>, then you might be taking quite a big risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut if you take your ring to a reputable jeweler<\/strong>, then you’re probably pretty safe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nNo decent jeweler would want to ruin or tarnish their reputation<\/strong> over a little diamond (no matter what carat weight it is). <\/p>\n

It’s just not worth it!<\/h2>\n

\nTo be fair and honest with you though, every business from small mom and pop stores, to high profile corporate jewelry stores will have people, individuals <\/strong>that work for them, that may not be so trust worthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It’s just a fact of life.<\/h2>\n

\nIt doesn’t mean the jewelry store is dishonest<\/strong>, or out to rip you off. Just that one single person <\/strong>(the bad egg) that’s working for them.<\/p>\n

\nThis can be anyone, anytime, anywhere. There is no guarantee when it comes to people or life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So what can you do to protect yourself?<\/h2>\n

\nBe prepared!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Know your stone!<\/h2>\n

\nBe able to identify it<\/strong>. Be proactive and show the jewelry store that you know your diamond, and are taking measures to protect yourself<\/strong>, your diamond, and the jeweler as well.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s playing it smart!<\/strong><\/p>\n

So how do you do this?<\/h2>\n

\nMicroscoping your diamond!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nLooking at the flaws, memorizing <\/strong>where they are, so later, you can view them again and identify them once more<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nDraw them out<\/strong> on the repair slip if you must!<\/p>\n

\nYou really should do this!<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\nAnd, if your diamond is laser inscribed<\/strong>, look for the laser inscription on the side of your stone (on the girdle<\/strong>). Match those numbers up with the numbers on your diamond report<\/strong> (certificate). If they don’t match, it’s NOT your diamond!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIf the certificate has a diamond plot<\/strong> (a map of the inclusions), then view the plot and view your diamond under a scope to find the flaws and confirm that it’s your diamond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nInclusions are like fingerprints<\/strong>, every one is unique and different, and no two will ever look alike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nEvery diamond created in nature has it’s own identifying birthmarks<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

You just need to find them!<\/h2>\n

\nAnd, you don’t even need to find them all, for chances are you can’t (unless you’re a trained professional<\/strong>). You only need to find a few<\/strong> of them. The biggest and easiest ones to identify.<\/p>\n

\nUsually these are lines, pin points, black carbon spots<\/strong>… Things that you can easily spot and say “Yes, that’s my diamond!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nView your stone when you drop it off at the jeweler<\/strong>. Ask them to view it under a microscope<\/a>. Find your flaws (they will never grow, shrink, or move, they’ll look like that forever!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

This identification is peace of mind!<\/h2>\n

\nYou’ll know you got your diamond back!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAfter all, no one who wants to switch out your diamonds are going to do it with a similar quality stone<\/strong>… Nope!<\/strong> If they swap it out, they’ll try to put in a lower quality stone<\/strong>, something that’s low color, low clarity, or a bad cut<\/strong>. Something, in other words, that would be noticeable <\/strong>if you scoped the stone.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s all about taking protective measures <\/strong>to keep yourself from getting taken.<\/p>\n

The #1 protection…<\/h2>\n

\nAnd just so you know, the #1 way to protect your diamond, is to actually buy a laser inscribed stone<\/strong> (and you can have this done AFTER you buy the stone<\/a> as well). And usually stones that are under 1.00 are laser inscribed <\/strong>(at least by GIA<\/strong>). <\/p>\n

The #2 protection, is insurance. Of course.<\/h2>\n

\nInsure your diamond<\/strong>. Insure it for loss, theft, or damage<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nAnd last, but not least…<\/p>\n

Trust your eyes and your gut!<\/h2>\n

\nIf the stone doesn’t look right (granted, your stone WILL look different<\/strong> when you get it back, because it’ll be professionally cleaned<\/strong>, … meaning, not dirty<\/strong>), but it really comes down to YOU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nMost people when they drop off their rings, don’t EVER look at the stone or diamond<\/strong>. They barely even give it a second glance<\/strong>. And then when they get it back, they’ll scrutinize the ring<\/strong> (because everyone is sceptical <\/strong>about jewelers), and of course it’ll look different.<\/p>\n

Don’t be this person.<\/h2>\n

\nLook at it NOW!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nGet familiar with your stone, your inclusions<\/strong>, the cut, the facets<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nYou have to identify it.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\nGrab yourself a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a> and study your stone well.<\/p>\n

\nIt really is the only way to be sure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd, don’t forget to have them diamond test the stone<\/strong> (with a diamond tester<\/a>), just to make sure it’s genuine as well. And not some fake stone or CZ!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThere isn’t one store in the world<\/strong> that can always be accountable <\/strong>for all their employees, behaviors, or intentions. <\/p>\n

\nIf someone wants to steal your stone, they will<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt doesn’t matter where they work<\/strong>, or what their position<\/strong> is.<\/p>\n

It happens, and can happen to YOU!<\/h2>\n

\nYou just narrow these odds<\/strong> if you shop at a reputable place (ask your friends and family or check the BBB website<\/a>), and if you are prepared<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Scope your stone!<\/h2>\n

\nMemorize your inclusions<\/strong> (99.999% of all diamonds have them).<\/p>\n

\nAnd do make sure it’s insured!<\/strong><\/p>\n
