\nCut is a fascinating 4C<\/strong>, and it has some very interesting facts about it that makes it a great topic<\/strong> and conversation starter<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

So let’s begin…<\/h2>\n

\nThis is, 5 things you DIDN’T know about Cut!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nStarting with shape…<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) Cut is NOT Shape!<\/h2>\n

\nThe cut of a stone is not<\/strong> Round, Square, Rectangle…<\/p>\n

\nIt’s the way a diamond is faceted and proportioned<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nIt’s the height of the crown, the thickness of the girdle, the depth of the pavilion, as seen in the diamond profile below<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nCut is how the facets are angled<\/strong> to produce cool designs and cutting styles<\/strong> like the Brilliant Cut, Marquise Cut, Princess Cut, Pear Cut, Emerald Cut and Cushion Cut…<\/p>\n

\nSo if you ask a salesperson what the cut of the stone is, and they reply “ROUND<\/strong>“, leave and leave quickly!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBecause that ain’t gonna cut it!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

2) No Cut Grades for Fancy Cut Diamonds<\/h2>\n

\nOkay, this may be a surprise for some<\/strong>, but the only true cut grades on the market are for the Brilliant Cut Diamond<\/strong>. And those are: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut there are no official grades<\/strong> for any fancy shaped stone like the Princess Cut, Oval Cut, Radiant Cut or Cushion Cut… That’s because there is way too much criteria involved<\/strong> to pin-point an exact ideal proportion… Like the Depth and Width… Many fancy cuts have 2 or 3 measurements<\/strong> and some need a deeper cut to really bring out the design and brilliance of the stone. <\/p>\n

\nSo instead, I usually tell people to look for 2 other features<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Polish and Symmetry!<\/h2>\n

\nPolish and Symmetry grades<\/strong> will give you a better overall indication<\/strong> of what the cut is of a fancy cut diamond. As seen in the diamond report<\/strong> below…<\/p>\n

\nAnd secondly…<\/strong><\/p>\n

SPARKLE!<\/h2>\n

\nView the diamond with your own eyes<\/strong>. See if it sparkles like crazy. That’s what truly matters. Sparkle and beauty!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

3) GIA’s New Cut Grades!<\/h2>\n

\nGIA<\/strong>, the Gemological Institute of America<\/a>, the founders who designed and devised the 4C’s<\/strong>, came up with new cut grades for brilliant cut stones that really improved customer knowledge about the topic.<\/p>\n

\nBefore these new grades, jewelers relied heavily on the Table and Depth Percentages<\/strong>, which often went by the 60\/60 rule of thumb<\/strong>. This was approx. 60% Table Width and 60% Diamond Depth. As seen here…<\/p>\n

\n\"60<\/p>\n

But the 60\/60 rule was difficult for customers<\/strong>, and even jewelers to decipher<\/strong>. Especially since you also had to look at the girdle thickness, crown angles, table width, proportions, percentages… And it was confusing and difficult to comprehend, let alone determine if the diamond was cut well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd the main reason that diamonds aren’t cut well<\/strong> to begin with is simple:<\/p>\n

PROFIT!<\/h2>\n

\nDiamond cutters maximize the parent rock<\/strong> so they can make the most amount of profit<\/strong> from it.<\/p>\n

Who can blame them?<\/h2>\n

\nBut it left diamond cut all over the board<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

GIA changed all that!<\/h2>\n

\nThey made learning cut easy. For everyone!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAt just a glance you can NOW see how a diamond is cut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

WOW!<\/h2>\n

\nP.S. <\/strong>The BEST cut grades are triple excellent stones<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nAlso know as Hearts and Arrows<\/strong>, Hearts on Fire<\/strong>, or True Hearts<\/strong> (As seen here at James Allen<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nTrue Hearts shows Arrows from a top view<\/strong>, and Hearts from a bottom view<\/strong> (when seen through a special loupe). They are stunning and the best that money can buy<\/strong>. Take a look…<\/p>\n

\nHearts and Arrows will give a diamond the most sparkle that any diamond could have<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nNothing beats them!<\/strong><\/p>\n

4) Cut makes Everything Better!<\/h2>\n

\nCut is the ultimate “C”<\/strong>. It makes the Clarity better<\/strong>, the Carat Weight bigger<\/strong>, the Color whiter<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nIt’s all because of sparkle and brilliance<\/strong>. The better the cut, the better EVERYTHING<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

\n\"Excellent<\/p>\n

\nInclusions in the stone will be harder to see<\/strong> if the stone is sparkling. It masks the flaws!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThe brightness of the stone makes it appear whiter!<\/strong> And because it’s blinging so much, it makes the stone appear BIGGER!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSo buy an Excellent cut diamond<\/a> and the whole diamond will look better<\/strong>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

5) Cut brings a Diamond to Life<\/h2>\n

\n\"An<\/p>\n

\nWithout the proper facets and angles<\/strong> and proportions, diamonds would have no brilliance or sparkle whatsoever.<\/p>\n

\nThey’d look just like every other rock<\/strong> on the face of the earth.<\/p>\n

Lifeless!<\/h2>\n

\nBut with an excellent cut stone, with all the ideal precisions<\/strong> and mathematical proportions<\/strong>, light enters a diamond, gets reflected across, and exits the diamond better than any other natural stone on the planet.<\/p>\n

\nAnd this life is what makes a diamond so beautiful<\/strong>. It makes people want them. Love them. Desire them.<\/p>\n

\nWe get lost in the fire and scintillation<\/strong>. We dream of owning such a glorious stone…<\/p>\n

Cut Rules!<\/h2>\n

\nSo if you buy a diamond<\/strong>, especially for an engagement ring<\/a>, buy it loose<\/strong>, buy it certified<\/strong> (GIA, or at the very least, AGS), and buy it with an excellent cut, polish and symmetry<\/strong>, and you’ll see that diamond sparkle FOREVER<\/strong>!<\/p>\n
