\nFor this is something that everyone should stop and do<\/strong> right now…<\/p>\n

Inspect your jewelry<\/h2>\n

\nBecause you’d be amazed at the amount of times I see people wearing pendants, bracelets and earrings with open jump rings<\/strong> (also called c rings).<\/p>\n

\nA jump ring is basically a round ring with a split in it<\/strong>. This ring is used to join other sections<\/strong> or pieces of jewelry together. Like a pendant to a charm (which I always advise having the splice soldered together<\/strong>), or a bead to a bracelet.<\/p>\n

\nMany chains and dangle earrings use jump rings… Lots of them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s a fairly common practice.<\/h2>\n

\nAnd if you look close enough<\/strong> (grab yourself a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a>), you’ll see that the ring should be aligned and closed with no gap in between them.<\/strong> If you do see a gap, like in the cute cookie cat pendant shown below (which shows up massively in close-up photographs<\/strong>), then that gap needs to be closed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, you’ll lose your jewelry.<\/h2>\n

\nThat gap needs to be flush and tight<\/strong>, or else the item will slip free and you’ll lose it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThat, or you’ll catch the open hook on your clothing, sweaters, or hair<\/strong> and do more damage (and pull the jump ring even further apart<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

This is not good.<\/h2>\n

\nHappily, there is an easy fix to this.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd one that you can do yourself<\/strong>, at home<\/strong>, in just seconds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut to do that, you’ll need yourself some needle nose pliers<\/a> (2 of them<\/strong> – one for each hand).<\/p>\n

\nFor you’ll have to put one needle nose on either side of the jump ring (either side of the open gap<\/strong>), and twist them together and in until the gap closes<\/strong> and they are good and tight and the ends are touching each other<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt only takes a moment to do, and if you don’t feel comfortable<\/strong> in doing this, just take your item to a local jewelry store and they’ll gladly do it for you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It’s either that, or bye-bye kitty.<\/h2>\n
