“I’m lost!”<\/h2>\n

\nEver been hiking and lost?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSearching for Pokemon <\/strong>and have no idea where you’re at???<\/p>\n

\nYour phone dies<\/strong>, you’re stuck in a field<\/strong>, or a forest<\/strong>, or a valley<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

“HELLLLPPPP!”<\/h2>\n

\nWell, did you know that you can actually navigate yourself to freedom?<\/strong> Find your bearings and get back on track<\/strong>, with nothing more than your analog wrist watch<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\nThis is because you can use those hands as a compass<\/strong>, and find your North, South, East and West<\/strong> again…<\/p>\n

Which can be a real life saver!<\/h2>\n

\nIt’s pretty easy too<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nThis is how you use your wrist watch as a compass:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nTake your watch off and hold it in your left hand. Hold it straight out<\/strong> with 12 noon pointing to the left<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nNow… Look at the hour hand<\/strong> (the smallest hand). Find it and turn it towards the sun<\/strong> so the arrow is pointing towards that big burning star<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Like so…<\/h2>\n

Once you have the sun lined up<\/strong>, then all you need to do is to find the halfway mark<\/strong> between the hour hand and 12…<\/p>\n

\nOnce you find the halfway mark, that will point you SOUTH!<\/strong><\/p>\n

See, that was easy!<\/h2>\n

\nNow, to verify these results<\/strong> tested, I brought up my compass (the iphone has a built in compass<\/strong>, not that this would help you any if your battery was dead… but for testing purposes<\/strong>, it’s ideal.)<\/p>\n

The compass showed me the four cardinal directions…<\/h2>\n

\nAnd they were absolutely accurate!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAs shown in the overlay<\/strong> below…<\/p>\n

See, it worked!<\/h2>\n

\nAnd it worked pretty freaking good<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

I was impressed!<\/h2>\n

\nA couple of hours later<\/strong>, I double checked<\/strong> the compass again…<\/p>\n

And once again, it worked perfect!<\/h2>\n

And one more last test…<\/h2>\n

\n3 hours later<\/strong>, I went outside (freaky, eh?) and tested my watch compass<\/strong> again…<\/p>\n

BINGO!<\/h2>\n

\nStill extremely accurate!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThat’s a great thing to learn…<\/p>\n

I can find the North Pole!<\/h2>\n

\nDo keep in mind that this works fine if you’re in the USA<\/strong>… or anywhere on the Northern Hemisphere<\/strong>. But if you’re on the other side of the Equator<\/strong>, the Southern side, then you have to align things differently… Point 12 Noon at the sun<\/strong>. Find the halfway mark between noon and the hour hand, and THAT will point you NORTH!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOdd<\/strong>… Just like the toilet water flushing counterclockwise<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Oh wait, that’s a myth! Right?<\/h2>\n

\nDaylight Savings Time<\/strong> is supposed to mess up these results by an hour<\/strong> by the way… You’re supposed to subtract an hour<\/strong> to find true North<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nBut I live in DST <\/strong>and in all 3 tests… The time was PERFECT<\/strong>, I didn’t have to accommodate for daylight<\/strong> at all… <\/p>\n

The halfway point worked fine!<\/h2>\n

\nDo note that if the sun doesn’t go down until late, like 8-9 pm<\/strong>, then you’ll have to still point the hour hand at the sun… <\/p>\n

\nWhich means, you’ll have to turn your back<\/strong> to the sun, to find the direction markers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Which just makes sense!<\/h2>\n

\nSo find your headings, find your Pokemon<\/strong>, and get the hell out!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOr just buy a real compass from Amazon!<\/a><\/p>\n
