“Was my Diamond Switched?”<\/h2>\n

\nThat’s the question that plagues many people with engagement rings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nThey often wonder if the jewelry store or jeweler has swapped out their stone<\/strong> for a lower quality stone that isn’t theirs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nLuckily, there are some very quick and efficient ways<\/strong> to tell if your stone has been exchanged<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nSo let’s look at these, since it’s something that every diamond owner should know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1) Certified Laser Inscription<\/h2>\n

\nFirst off, let’s hope that you bought a certified diamond<\/a> (GIA is the BEST<\/strong>), and let’s hope that the stone is Laser Inscribed<\/strong> (usually diamonds under 1.00 ct<\/strong> are).<\/p>\n

\nLaser Inscriptions are tiny Numbers or Letters<\/strong> that are etched onto the side of the diamond girdle, and those numbers are unique to your stone<\/strong>, will be there forever, and are easy to match up<\/strong> with the numbers on your diamond (use a inscription viewer<\/a>, or 30x loupe<\/a> (10x is what they use for grading<\/strong>, but 20 or 30x is best for viewing inscriptions<\/strong>) and you’ll see it pretty easily<\/strong>). <\/p>\n

\nView these numbers when you drop your ring off at the jewelers<\/strong>, and view them again when you pick it back up<\/strong>, just to make sure it’s the same stone.<\/p>\n

2) Memorize your Inclusions<\/h2>\n

\nKnow your flaws!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nEvery diamond has flaws (99.9% of them<\/strong>), and every flaw is unique<\/strong>. Just like moles and freckles<\/strong> on a person, they all look different, are different colors, positions, angles, sizes, shapes…<\/p>\n

No two are alike!<\/h2>\n

\nSo if you view your diamond under a microscope<\/strong>, and memorize your flaws, then you’ll always be able to identify your stone<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nYou’ll know that at the 6 o’clock position<\/strong> (think of your diamond as a clock face<\/strong> for orientation), you have a black spot<\/strong> (or line, or cloud, or pin-point). That black spot has been in that diamond for a billion years<\/strong>. Meaning, it will never change<\/strong>, dissolve, shift<\/strong>, grown, shrink<\/strong>, or look any different from the day you bought it<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nThis also means, that if you view your inclusions, learn where they are and what they look like<\/strong>, you’ll be able to view your stone again, anytime in the future, and those flaws will be there, exactly as before<\/strong> (that’s if you get your stone back).<\/p>\n

Another awesome thing to do…<\/h2>\n

\nDraw your flaws out!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nGrab a sheet of paper and a pencil<\/strong>. Use the Microscope<\/a> and PLOT your imperfections<\/strong>. As so…<\/p>\n

\n\"memorize<\/p>\n

That way you have a visual map<\/strong> of what they look like, and you can refer back to that map<\/strong> at anytime and identify your stone.<\/p>\n

\n(P.S. Make sure your Diamond is CLEAN<\/strong> when you do this, otherwise you could be mapping dirt and crud<\/strong> on the surface of the stone!)<\/p>\n

3) Certificate Plot<\/h2>\n

\nSomething even easier<\/strong> than trying to memorize your flaws<\/strong>, or drawing them out<\/strong>, is to have the experts <\/strong>do it for you.<\/p>\n

\nCertificate Companies like GIA<\/strong>, will often have a diamond plot<\/strong> (map) of the stone, showing exactly where the flaws are situated.<\/p>\n

\nThey’ll show the plot view from the top position and bottom<\/strong>. As seen here…<\/p>\n

So all you have to do is to view that plot<\/strong>, and rotate your stone in the microscope<\/strong> to coincide with those flaws. Then you’ll be able to find them one by one<\/strong> and know that you got your diamond back.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s awesome protection<\/strong> and it keeps you from getting ripped off!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSo there you go, those are the 3 BEST ways to prevent diamond switching<\/strong>, and it all comes down to one thing…<\/p>\n

Knowing your Stone!<\/h2>\n

\nYOU, and only YOU<\/strong>, are responsible for keeping track of your diamond.<\/p>\n

\nYou have to be proactive <\/strong>and view your diamond when you drop it off<\/strong> at the jewelry store (don’t just hand it over and go). FORCE them to view it with you<\/strong>, so you both can see, locate, and find your flaws (which also means, take your diamond certificate with you<\/strong>, just don’t leave it there! That’s YOURS!<\/strong>)… And when you go back to pick up your repair, sizing, polishing<\/strong>, whatever…<\/p>\n

VIEW YOUR STONE AGAIN!<\/h2>\n

\nDon’t just take it and run out the door….<\/strong><\/p>\n

NOPE!<\/h2>\n

\nGo back to the microscope<\/strong> (microscopes are easier for customers to use than a hand held loupe<\/a>), find your flaws<\/strong>, and know that you have your stone back<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Safe and Secure<\/h2>\n

\nAnd you then have protected yourself<\/strong>, your diamond<\/strong>, but your pocket book<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n
