{"id":19713,"date":"2024-07-20T08:00:39","date_gmt":"2024-07-20T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/?p=19713"},"modified":"2024-07-20T08:48:56","modified_gmt":"2024-07-20T12:48:56","slug":"check-your-jump-rings-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/check-your-jump-rings-now\/","title":{"rendered":"CHECK YOUR JUMP RINGS NOW"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"blog-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Check-Your-Chain-Bracelet-Jump-Rings-NOW.gif\" alt=\"Check Your Chain Bracelet Jump Rings NOW\" title=\"Check Your Chain Bracelet Jump Rings NOW\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19715\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>Grab your loupe.<\/h2>\n<p>\nYou know what the<strong> #1 thing<\/strong> is to give out and break on <strong>chains, necklaces and bracelets?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>The jump rings.<\/h2>\n<p>\n(Some people call them <strong>O rings<\/strong>, or <strong>C rings<\/strong>&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>\nThese jump rings (the little round rings that hold your links, chains, tennis bracelets, clasps on &#8211; see photo right) <strong>can have many issues<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\nThe first is this&#8230; <strong>Most are not soldered.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Many are open.<\/h2>\n<p>\nWhich means, <strong>if the chain is tugged on<\/strong> (babies love to do this), then the jump ring will <strong>open up<\/strong> and your necklace will <strong>fall off your neck<\/strong> (or arm). <strong>You&#8217;ll lose it if you&#8217;re not careful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>That&#8217;s the first issue to look for.<\/h2>\n<p>\nI highly advise if your jump rings are not soldered, <strong>get them soldered now<\/strong> (but this can only be done if it&#8217;s solid gold or sterling silver; any gold plated or costume jewelry will not work).<\/p>\n<p>\nTake it into a jewelry store and have them <strong>solder those rings closed<\/strong> so they don&#8217;t open up.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd while you&#8217;re looking at them (you really should invest in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2s3FWQD\">the best jeweler&#8217;s loupe ever<\/a>), <strong>also see if the ring is snug<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nIt should be closed, but as you&#8217;ll find, <strong>many are gapped<\/strong>, unaligned, and will allow your chain to <strong>slip through the crack quickly!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>That&#8217;s not good.<\/h2>\n<p>\nThose should also be closed up, snug, and <strong>soldered as well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Now&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>If your jump rings are closed and xoldered&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Congrats.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nBut that doesn&#8217;t mean <strong>all is right<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nBecause no matter what, these rings are <strong>the first thing to wear down<\/strong> on a chain.<\/p>\n<p>\nEspecially since jump rings come in <strong>all sorts of sizes, thicknesses, and shapes<\/strong>. Most are round, but <strong>oval out<\/strong> as they get stretched and worn (see photo below).<\/p>\n<p><h2>And jump rings get devious, too.<\/h2>\n<p>\nBecause they may <strong>look durable, thick, fastened<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\nBut many are actually <strong>frail, weak<\/strong>, and <strong>ready to break<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nThis happens because the chain links <strong>move back and forth<\/strong>. They <strong>saw <\/strong>into each other, <strong>cutting through the metal with constant movement and friction<\/strong>. They actually will create <strong>cavities or voids<\/strong> in the jump rings.<\/p>\n<p>\nThis happens to any kind of link (like the loop that holds your pendant on, or the loops on your earrings or pearl pendants).
