{"id":19991,"date":"2017-06-24T09:28:05","date_gmt":"2017-06-24T13:28:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/?p=19991"},"modified":"2017-06-24T09:28:05","modified_gmt":"2017-06-24T13:28:05","slug":"what-si-clarity-really-means","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/what-si-clarity-really-means\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT SI CLARITY REALLY MEANS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"blog-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/What-SI-Clarity-Really-Means.gif\" alt=\"What SI Clarity Really Means\" title=\"What SI Clarity Really Means\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19996\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>SI <em>WHAT?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\nNearly half of the diamonds that you see in jewelry stores today have an <strong>SI clarity grade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut &#8220;<strong>SI<\/strong>&#8221; can be rather confusing <strong>if you don&#8217;t know what it means<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo first, let&#8217;s look at the <strong>true definition<\/strong> of SI clarity, and then I&#8217;ll tell you what it really means.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>SI is an abbreviation for &#8220;Slightly Included&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\nSlightly Included are grades on a <strong>GIA clarity grading chart<\/strong> (a scale for grading <strong>inclusions <\/strong>and <strong>blemishes <\/strong>in a diamond). SI clarity imperfections are <strong>normally invisible<\/strong> to the unaided eye (meaning, without the use of magnification, like a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kwTzmN\">microscope<\/a> or a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kwSI5G\">jeweler&#8217;s loupe<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\nThese small inclusions are <strong>visible once magnified<\/strong> (10x magnification is what they use to grade diamonds with), and are often located <strong>centrally<\/strong>, and easily noticed once scoped.<\/p>\n<p>\nSometimes these small markings (<strong>the diamond&#8217;s fingerprint<\/strong>), can be seen <strong>without magnification<\/strong> (this happens more in fancy cut diamonds &#8211; Princess Cut, Oval Cut, Marquise Cut&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>\nThere are two grades of SI clarity diamonds: <strong>SI1 and SI2<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><h2>See the GIA clarity grading chart below:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/SI-Clarity-On-The-GIA-Grading-Chart.jpg\" alt=\"SI Clarity On The GIA Grading Chart\" title=\"SI Clarity On The GIA Grading Chart\" width=\"640\" height=\"875\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/SI-Clarity-On-The-GIA-Grading-Chart.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/SI-Clarity-On-The-GIA-Grading-Chart-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><p>That&#8217;s the chart that everyone sees, <strong>a diagram of diamonds<\/strong> with marks on them to give you an general idea about clarity grades.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut seeing <em>real diamonds<\/em>, <strong>real SI clarity stones<\/strong>, is a much better <strong>learning tool<\/strong>. But both stones <strong>look very similar<\/strong> to the eye. In fact, most people can&#8217;t tell the difference between them side by side (<strong>even under magnification<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><h2>But the biggest difference between them is this:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The inclusions in SI2 diamonds are usually <strong>bigger<\/strong>, more in <strong>abundance<\/strong>, and<strong> more obvious<\/strong> under magnification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>From a side view<\/strong> (through the pavilion), you can often <strong>see the flaws<\/strong> in an SI2 stone (you can&#8217;t see them in an SI1).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nSI1 diamonds are <strong>the best seller of the bunch<\/strong>, and are also <strong>the most popular clarity<\/strong> on earth because they face up <strong>eye-clean<\/strong>, and look just like a more expensive clarity.<\/p>\n<p>\nSI1 diamonds are in all the stores as well (versus higher clarity diamonds are <strong>harder to find<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\nPlus, with SI1 clarity diamonds, <strong>you won&#8217;t see any black carbon spots<\/strong> (that look like <strong>pepper<\/strong>), lines, cracks, cloudy areas, or fractures in the diamond (<strong>without magnification<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><h2>But here&#8217;s what it really means&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>\nAn SI1 diamond will <strong>look just like a flawless diamond<\/strong> with the bare eye. These small inclusions are <strong>a good thing<\/strong> because they make <strong>identifying a diamond a breeze<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nSince flaws themselves <strong>never change<\/strong>, alter, grown, shrink, or move, they&#8217;ll look like that <strong>forever<\/strong>. After all, they&#8217;ve looked like that for over a <strong>billion years<\/strong> already. So at anytime, anywhere, you&#8217;ll be able to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kwSI5G\">pick up a loupe<\/a>, and <strong>view those same flaws<\/strong> and know that <em>that is your stone<\/em> and no one (or no <strong>jeweler<\/strong>) has <strong>swapped it out or switched it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>That&#8217;s peace of mind<\/h2>\n<p>\nNow, <strong>one more word about SI<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\nOn the market you may come across <strong>one other<\/strong> SI clarity range:<\/p>\n<p><h2>SI3 clarity diamonds<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>IGNORE THEM!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nSI3 is <strong>not a GIA grading range<\/strong> (see the grading chart above again). GIA (Gemological Institute of America) does <strong>not recognize SI3<\/strong> as a grade. <\/p>\n<p>\nSI3 is created and used by one grading company only: <strong>IGI<\/strong> (International Gemological Institute).<\/p>\n<p>\nThis <strong>extra grade<\/strong> helps sell their <strong>lower quality stones<\/strong> better.
