\nBack in the old days, square or rectangle diamonds were cut with steps<\/strong>; a step cut, like the emerald cut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nStep cuts were pretty, but didn’t offer much brilliance or sparkle<\/strong>. Plus, because of the lack of facets, inclusions stood out like a sore thumb<\/strong>. You really needed a top-notch clarity<\/strong> to not see any imperfections with the bare eye.<\/p>\n

\nOnce the brilliant cutting style came along, it over-powered the step cuts<\/strong>. Which is a good thing, because that led to the birth of the princess cut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nUnderstand one thing, this brilliant cutting style is the actual way the stone is faceted. Like a starburst on the bottom<\/strong> (the pavilion), and kite-shaped facets<\/strong> around the crown (the raised section that lifts up the table).<\/p>\n

This cutting style is not the actual shape itself.<\/h2>\n

\nWhich is why this modified cut<\/strong> has been used on almost all the modern common shapes today: Princess Cut<\/strong>, Heart Cut, Pear Cut<\/strong>, Trilliant Cut, Radiant Cut<\/strong>, Oval Cut, and Marquise Cut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThis style of faceting gives the diamond more brilliance and fire and life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nWhen most people think of a princess cut, they think of a square stone<\/strong>. But most stones are not exactly square<\/strong>. Most are more rectangular-ish in shape. Compare these stones below…<\/p>\n

\nYou see, princess cuts can come in all different widths, lengths, and thicknesses<\/strong>… It’s based upon how they’re cut from the parent rock (and what rock is available to make the biggest and best stones from). So the result is a variety of odd shapes and sizes<\/strong>. Some come out square, other’s squar-ish… It just depends on how much money<\/strong> they can obtain when maximizing the rock.<\/p>\n

\nBecause people still think a princess cut is square<\/strong>, no matter whom you ask. I do too<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIn fact, I love the square stones<\/strong> so much better. They appeal to me<\/strong>. Plus, they look way bigger<\/strong> than a rectangular shaped stone.<\/p>\n

\nBut the actual shape really does come down to opinion<\/strong>, and nothing more.<\/p>\n

\nSome people like a longer stone (they look good in longer mountings<\/strong>). Some don’t. <\/p>\n

\nThere is no ideal shape<\/strong>, it’s all in what you like.<\/p>\n

\nPersonally I like the square, as I’ve often stated… And to see if a stone is truly square, just check the certificate<\/strong> and look at the measurements<\/strong>: i.e. 5.24mm x 5.21mm. You’ll notice that even “square<\/strong>” stones are not absolutely-perfectly square<\/strong>. They’ll always be off a smidge. But if you get close enough, it will face up square<\/strong>, for sure.<\/p>\n

What matters more than Shape?<\/h2>\n

\nThe thing that should matter more<\/strong> than the actual shape, is the visually aspect<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nSome princess cuts react with light<\/strong> differently. Some are deeper, shallow, spread, dark, even ugly<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nSome have better symmetry<\/strong> and proportions and just look more appealing (eye-candy<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
