Most honest Jewelers will try to Steer you away from these types of Inclusions. They are…

Black Carbon Spots

Inclusions, Top, Center of your Diamond

Cracks or Fractures running through your Diamond

Chips or Cracks on the side of the Diamond

Now let’s take a Closer look…

1) Black Carbon Spots

Black Carbon Spots are Dark or Black Inclusions that look like pieces of Pepper. (Read: Black Pepper in your Diamond!) They are very Noticeable in Diamonds and stand out like a Sore Thumb.

Black Carbon Spots are normally only visible in Diamonds with I1, I2, and I3 Clarity. (Sometimes you can see Black Spots in SI2 Clarity Diamonds, only visible from the Side View though!)

Black Spots in your Diamond are actually Pure Carbon Minerals that Never Crystallized Properly. Black Spots also identify it as a Low Grade Diamond. If you have Black Spots in your Diamond they will be in there forever.

Not all Carbon is Bad…

The more preferred Carbon Inclusions to have are White Carbon Spots!

White Inclusions can be the same Size and Shape as the Black ones, but because they’re White, it makes them harder to see. A White Diamond Masks the White Imperfections. So if you must get Inclusions, get the White ones!

Point is, stay away from Black Spots!

No Bride-to-be will want to stare at an Ugly Dark Flaw for the rest of her life!

2) Inclusions Top, Center of your Diamond

If you have an Inclusion Dead Center of your Diamond, it will not only look Bad, it’ll Drive you Crazy!

You’ll always be staring at it. It’ll overpower your Diamond. You won’t be able to look at anything else but that Spot! No amount of Brilliance or Sparkle can Hide it. It’s right on the top, Floating in Plain view like a Scar.

You’ll find yourself constantly trying to rub it or wipe it away. It won’t help! Once you know it’s there, you’ll be blinded by it. Eye-visible Inclusions stop light and make your Diamond look Dirty. You won’t want to show it off to anyone for fear that they’ll see that bulls-eye Imperfection. Eye-visible Inclusions like this are considered an I Clarity Diamond!

Try to skip Inclusions that reside top center of your Diamond. Get Inclusions that lay Deeper into the Diamond, or off to the side of the stone, where it’s Hidden by the Facets. Never directly in the center!

3) Long Cracks or Fractures

Cracks, Fractures, Lines and Flaws not only look horrible, but they Weaken your Diamond. If you hit your Diamond hard enough, your Diamond could literally Break in half. It will Crack right where the Fault line is! Your Diamond will now be Split into two Chunks of Worthless Rock!

Fractures and Cracks are Sightly, Deep and Long. They block light, look Dark, and Cloud up your Pretty Little Diamond. All it does it leave your Stone Vulnerable.

Be careful about purchasing a Diamond with long Cracks and lines in them. It may be Cheaper than other Diamonds, but a Broken Stone is impossible to fix!

Don’t waste your Money. Skip the Crack!

4) Chips on the Side of the Diamond

The last of the Worst types of Inclusions to have in a Diamond are the ones that Chip or Break the Surface of your Diamond.

(As a side note: A Chipped Diamond could also mean that the Diamond’s Girdle is Thin and Fractured easily)

Where else will you see this Chipped Girdle surfacing?

Girdle Chips

Chips around the outside of the Diamond will be easy to Spot. Visible Chunks taken out of the edge will not only be Noticeable, but you should also be able to feel them.

Take your Fingernail and run it around the Girdle’s Edge. You should be able to detect if there is a Crevice or Dip in the Surface. Fine Chips around the Edge are common in older Diamonds. (Called Bearded Girdles!) You’ll see these in Grandma’s Diamond Rings, Trade-Ins, or Pawn Shop’s Used Diamonds. (Check them good for Dings!)

If your Diamond has a Gouge or Chunk or Chip taken out of the side of the stone, it should also be listed on the Diamond Certificate or Diamond Appraisal. Keep in mind, a large Chip will lower the Price or Value of your Diamond. That’s not good! Not only will it Cheapen it…

It will Weaken it as well!

If it’s already been Chipped, chances are very good, it’ll Chip easier the next time. Especially if you hit it in the same weak spot as before. You have to be extra careful with them.

Jewelers also have to be extra cautious when setting Chipped Stones as well. Too much pressure from their Pliers could Fracture or Crack a Diamond in just 2 seconds flat!

Jewelers Don’t Sell Chipped Diamonds

Jewelers don’t sell Diamonds with Chips in them. That’s a good thing! (Flaws, Yes! Chips, No! Unless you buy a Pre-Owned Stone… Then, it’s Possible!) Jewelers send out any Chipped Diamonds to have them Re-Cut and Re-Polished into smaller Diamonds.

No matter what, it doesn’t hurt to use a 10x Jewelers Loupe and take a closer look at the Diamond before you buy it!

So there you go…

4 Inclusions you CAN live without. Looking at these types of Natural (and man-made) Inclusions may help you choose a better looking Diamond. It should also help you stay away from Ugly Inclusions that do nothing but Depreciate your Beautiful Diamond.

And that’s the Biggest Flaw!

When People are Shopping for Loose Diamonds, they’re always Curious about Clarity and Inclusions.
