\nYES!<\/strong> It is a secret, and one you’ll love <\/strong>finding out.<\/p>\n

\nFor there is one critical step<\/strong> when it comes to removing watch links…<\/p>\n

\nOh, it’s not the tools themselves<\/strong>… really. They make plenty of great devices. The best ones, and the ones I recommend<\/strong> are shown below…<\/p>\n

\nSo first, let’s take a look at them<\/strong> so you’ll understand exactly what I’m talking about.<\/p>\n

Watch Band Link Remover<\/h2>\n

\nThis small plastic device<\/a> is something every jeweler has. It’s easy to use<\/strong>, painless, and takes just a couple of seconds<\/strong> to line up the link and push the pin through<\/strong> (by screwing the pin pusher through the device).<\/p>\n

\n\"Watch<\/a><\/p>\n

\nIf you have push pins (which are the most common <\/strong>pins) in your watch links (versus screws<\/strong>, which require a jeweler’s precision screwdriver set<\/a>, or clips <\/strong>which use clip spring removing pliers<\/a>), buy this pin pusher<\/a>. It works well!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSecondly, would be the handheld plier pin puncher<\/a>, as shown below…<\/p>\n

Watch Link Plier Puncher<\/h2>\n

\nThis tool is just as simple<\/strong> as the first. You line up the link hole with the pin, and push. The pin pops out in a second<\/strong>. This tool is better for some people to use since the previous one requires you to lay the watch flat<\/strong>. With this device, you don’t have to, because you hold the watch with one hand<\/strong> and pop the links out with the other. It’s like using a staple gun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hammer, Pin and Watch Holder<\/h2>\n

\nThis is the tried and true method<\/strong>. It’s the manual way of doing things, but often, when a link is stubborn<\/strong> and won’t come out, you’ll have to use a little force<\/strong> and hammer it out. So a watch holder that holds the watch band, allows you to align the punch and hammer the pin through. As shown below…<\/p>\n

These are great tools to use<\/a>, although they do require a little bit more practice and dexterity<\/strong> to hold the watch, holder (most jewelers use a wooden one, like this one here<\/a>), pin and hammer all at the same time <\/strong>(and do use the rubber end of the mallet hammer<\/a> on the watch so you don’t damage it<\/strong>). Many people hold the watch, holder and pin themselves and then get someone else<\/strong> to use the hammer (when you have a hammer in your hands, everything looks like a nail<\/strong>). Just watch your fingers<\/strong>! :)<\/p>\n

\nThis kit comes with a pin pusher<\/strong>, and extra punchers<\/strong> (which is great if you already have a mallet or hammer).<\/p>\n

But what about the Secret?<\/h2>\n

\nHere it is…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keep the Puncher Straight!!!<\/h2>\n

\nYou don’t know how many times people break those little metal punchers<\/strong> (make sure you buy a tool with extra punchers<\/strong>, you’ll need them), it’s seriously like every day<\/strong>. This is because they smash the watch band<\/strong> into the device, then push or twist as hard as they can, and BAM<\/em><\/strong>;<\/p>\n

The Puncher Breaks!<\/h2>\n

\nPunchers are delicate<\/strong>. They don’t take much pressure to snap them. So the key is to make sure the watch link hole is perfectly lined up<\/strong> with the puncher, and then gently, carefully<\/strong>, push the puncher through. If at any time the puncher feels like it’s stuck, jammed, or bending; STOP!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Readjust. Realign.<\/h2>\n

\nFor if you put too much force<\/strong> on the pin (say the link is snug<\/strong>, which happens if the links are dirty, corroded<\/strong>, or covered with plating<\/strong>), then all you’ll do is break the puncher<\/strong>. These punchers work great, but you have to proceed with caution<\/strong> and be gentle. They should push the pin out easily. If not, use a hammer and block instead (watch holder)<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nKeep the hole lined up<\/strong>, exert just a little tension, but not enough to break the tool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Because then, you’re SOL.<\/h2>\n
