SOLD!<\/h2>\n

\nThat’s what everybody wants to do when having a garage sale: to clean house<\/strong>, get rid of old crap<\/strong>, SELL SELL SELL!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd if you can make a couple of grand in the process, that’s the ultimate goal<\/strong> (so you can buy more stuff to fill up the house).<\/p>\n

\nI generally have a garage sale every 2-3 years (if I haven’t touched an item<\/strong> for over 2 years, it’s GONE!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Minimize – Declutter!<\/h2>\n

\nGet rid of all that jewelry you’re not wearing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nNow most of the jewelry that gets sold at garage sales or yard sales, is going to be the cheaper stuff<\/strong>, no doubt; Costume jewelry<\/strong>, silver pieces, the inexpensive rinky-dink items<\/strong> that can easily accumulate in the bottom of your jewelry case. Old fads<\/strong>, Pandora charms<\/strong>, Turquoise<\/strong>, earring drops<\/strong>, stretchy bracelets<\/strong>, your Grandfather’s Timex watch<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nYou may be able to sell expensive items as well (like gold or diamonds<\/strong>), but don’t count on it. People like to shop cheap at sales and always come with $5<\/strong>. Bigger, more costly goods are probably better off for Craig’s List or eBay<\/strong> (see my post here about Selling Jewelry on eBay<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nSo if you’re ditching some bracelets<\/strong>, watches, earrings<\/strong>, rings and things<\/strong>, you’ll want to do this first:<\/p>\n

1) Clean the Jewelry<\/h2>\n

\nGet a polishing cloth<\/a> or a jewelry cleaner<\/a> and go to town<\/strong>. Remove any dirt or debris from the item, because no one wants to look at, touch, or buy a dirty piece<\/strong>. If it’s clean, it’ll not only look better<\/strong>, but sell better<\/strong>. “Hey, look at that… The stones are sparkling!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

2) Get the Original Boxes<\/h2>\n

\nIf you have the boxes or bags<\/strong> that the item originally came in, get them. It’ll make the piece look more expensive and authentic<\/strong>. More expensive? Yes…<\/strong> You can even sell the original boxes on eBay (did you know that?<\/strong> If not, read my post here about selling jewelry boxes on eBay!<\/a>) You items may be worth more than you know.<\/p>\n

3) Watches – Get your Box and Instructions, too!<\/h2>\n

\nWatches are the same way. If you’re selling a watch, grab the original box and instruction manual<\/strong>. Plus, if you have any extra links<\/strong> (say you had some removed to fit your wrist), get those<\/strong>. The new buyer may have a bigger wrist and need them.<\/p>\n

\nAlso, if the watch isn’t ticking<\/strong>, and needs a new battery<\/a>, I’d suggest you put one in (use a watch tool kit<\/a>), or have a jeweler put one in for you (they usually charge you anywhere from $8-$20<\/strong> depending where you go). No one is going to buy a watch that isn’t running<\/strong> (because you yourself may not know if it truly is just the battery<\/strong> or not).<\/p>\n

4) Information!<\/h2>\n

\nOne of the biggest assets in selling jewelry<\/strong>, is giving people enough information about the item. Meaning, what are the gemstones?<\/strong> Peridot? Emerald? Green Tourmaline? Are they real Diamonds or CZ’s?<\/strong> Is the stone lab-created? Faux?<\/strong> You don’t want to leave people guessing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nLikewise with the metals. What is it? Gold, 10k, 14k, Silver? Platinum? Steel?<\/strong> List it! The more info you can give a potential buyer, the better. <\/p>\n

\nDo you know the carat weights?<\/strong> Look at the original receipt or appraisal <\/strong>(and if you truly want to know, see if a local jewelry store<\/strong> can help you out getting the basics). <\/p>\n

\nPlus, if you know other things like the ring size<\/strong>, bracelet or chain length<\/strong>, note it. <\/p>\n

\nAre they genuine cultured pearls?<\/strong> Freshwater? Fake??? How’s anyone going to know if you don’t tell them.<\/p>\n

5) Package it!<\/h2>\n

\nIf you don’t have the original bags or boxes<\/strong>, get some. Get something… It’s cheap enough!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nYou can buy lots of white cotton cardboard boxes<\/a> (in various sizes or shapes<\/strong>), or organza bags<\/a>, jewelry pouches<\/a> (with snap closures), or even just clear poly bags<\/a>.<\/p>\n

6) Price Tag Everything<\/h2>\n

\nGet some inexpensive string price tags<\/a> (you don’t want to put stickers on jewelry), that allows you to write down all the info<\/strong> you collected (even things like a regular retail price<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nLastly…<\/strong><\/p>\n

7) Watch it!<\/h2>\n

\nKeep your valuable items like jewelry, up front and visible<\/strong>, where you can keep an eye on them<\/strong> at all times.<\/p>\n

\nPeople like to steal <\/strong>these little sparkly treasures and trinkets in a heartbeat (another reason to only sell the cheaper goods<\/strong>). Jewelry is so easy to palm, hide, slip it on, and walk right out<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nPut them up on the cashier table<\/strong> if needed. That way you can also chit-chat with people about the items and where they came from<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

8) And the Price?<\/h2>\n

\nSetting a price for the items is up to you<\/strong>. Whatever you think is appropriate<\/strong>, go for it. Just know that everyone will say “Will you take $2 for this?<\/strong>” HA! Be prepared to part with less than expected… That’s the life of a garage sale<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nHopefully you’ll part with some old bling<\/strong>, cufflinks, lapel pins<\/strong>, brooches (even just earring backs<\/strong> or lobster clasps<\/strong>)… and be able to buy some new shiny things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
