Compare these Diamonds:<\/h2>\n

\nComparing stones is fun and educational<\/strong>, and that’s why I make these posts.<\/p>\n

\nFor seeing them with your own eyes, and seeing why one diamond is much higher priced<\/strong> than another, is really, well, eye-opening!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBecause some diamonds, at either end of the spectrum, can actually appear similar!<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s True!<\/h2>\n

\nIf you took one of the highest clarity of diamonds (Internally Flawless<\/strong>), and one of the lowest grades<\/strong> of clarity (I1<\/strong> – Included Level 1)…<\/p>\n

You may be Surprised!<\/h2>\n

\nYou may not be able to tell them apart.<\/p>\n

\nSounds crazy<\/strong>… But it really is the truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nTo prove it, I’ve gone to James Allen<\/a> and selected 2 diamonds;<\/strong> IF (Internally Flawless), and I1 (the lowest clarity range<\/strong> on Earth), and put them side by side…<\/p>\n

Can you tell which is which?<\/h2>\n

Astonishing isn’t it?<\/h2>\n

\nYou can’t really tell<\/strong>. One diamond is supposed to be practically perfect<\/strong>, and the other full of sightly eye-visible flaws and inclusions<\/strong>… But they look the same.<\/p>\n

What gives?<\/h2>\n

\nIt’s a combination of a couple of things…<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The size of the stone<\/li>\n
  2. What type of inclusions they are<\/li>\n
  3. Where these inclusions reside<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nSo let’s delve deeper…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1) The size of the stone:<\/h2>\n

    \nWhen dealing with small stones like the ones shown (.30 carat<\/strong>), everything gets smaller<\/em>. The viewable area, the inclusions, the overall appearance… <\/p>\n

    \nIt’s small, and the imperfections inside the stone tend to blend in and go unnoticed<\/strong>. If the diamonds were bigger, say 1 carat (100 points) each, then you could easily see these inclusions<\/strong> with the bare eye (no magnification needed). But anything smaller than a half carat or so, all start to look the same<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nIt just shows you how the apparent flaws in the bigger stones diminish and become almost invisible as you get smaller!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nUnless there are massive flaws, like huge black carbon spots<\/strong>, fractures, or clouds, you will probably never see them (which is awesome since the average diamond engagement ring<\/strong> is only .33 carats.)<\/p>\n

    \nThe main thing to look for in smaller stones is brilliance and sparkle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    2) What type of inclusions they are:<\/h2>\n

    \nLike I said, if the flaws are soft white thin feathers<\/strong>, or if the flaws are broken up and scattered around<\/strong> in points, you probably aren’t going to see them. But if there’s massive cracks<\/strong>, chunks of flaws, or dark spots dead center<\/strong>, it can not only make them more apparent, but it will hinder light and shine and make the inclusions stand out even more<\/strong> (and some stones literally look just like a white piece of salt<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    \nThe key to buying inclusions is how the diamond faces up<\/strong>. If they appear clean to the eye<\/strong> in the center, then chances are the flaws are fine and no one will ever notice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    3) Where these inclusions reside:<\/h2>\n

    \nWhere these inclusions lay, where they are situated<\/strong> in the stone is important. For if the flaws fall directly in the middle, right under the table, you’ll see them pretty quickly<\/strong>. But if they fall to the outside (under the crown facets<\/strong>), or to the bottom of the stone, they could stay hidden forever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nSo look into the viewable area (the window<\/strong>) of a diamond and see if anything huge jumps out. A lower clarity diamond could be a great diamond to own<\/strong> because it brings the price down greatly, and it makes identifying your diamond<\/strong> a breeze!<\/p>\n

    \nGranted, these prices are not so extreme<\/strong> (just 36%<\/strong> difference), but we are dealing with small stones. In larger diamonds, that price difference could be as much as $6,000 or more!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nSo never shrug off<\/strong> a lower clarity stone, it could look just as good as the most expensive ones<\/strong>. It all depends on the size (carat weight), and searching long enough to find that perfect stone.<\/p>\n

    One more thing to consider…<\/h2>\n

    \nIf you get a diamond that’s cut “ideal<\/strong>” or “excellent<\/strong>“, as in these true hearts diamonds<\/strong> below, then the cut itself will help hide flaws<\/strong> and inclusions (as well as color) more. It makes any diamond of any quality appear better!<\/strong><\/p>\n
