They’re HUGE!<\/h2>\n

\nDoing a search on Amazon<\/strong>, I ran into a pair of diamond studs<\/a> that has to be the most expensive<\/strong> diamond studs online.<\/p>\n

\nReady for the price?<\/strong><\/p>\n

They’re $74,999.00<\/h2>\n

\nWOW!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd what’s even more insane <\/strong>is this:<\/p>\n

The quality is not high!<\/h2>\n

\nGranted, just about all diamonds above 1 carat (especially in earrings<\/strong>) are either SI2, I1, I2, or I3. And these studs are just that: They are graded SI2-I1 clarity<\/strong>. Meaning, they could be one or the other quality (or both… Whatever stones they happen to have in stock). Also meaning; YOU WILL SEE INCLUSIONS IN THE STONES!<\/strong> That’s what Imperfect stands for; inclusions<\/strong>. Eye-visible flaws!<\/strong> It’s common in larger stones, and half <\/strong>of the diamonds in jewelry stores have them.<\/p>\n

The color is J-K<\/h2>\n

\nJ, K (not Just Kidding<\/strong>), is not a great color<\/strong>. J is at the bottom <\/strong>of the Near Colorless, meaning it will have a slight yellow tint to the diamond. And K is one step further down the color chart<\/strong>. K color could look really yellow<\/strong>! <\/p>\n

\nThis is all difficult to see from the photos they show… because they don’t show you the real diamonds!<\/strong> They are using sample stock photos that they use for all of their diamond studs sold. So you don’t actually see what it is you’re buying. If they did show you the real diamonds, you probably wouldn’t want them!<\/strong><\/p>\n

So what makes them so expensive?<\/h2>\n

\n4 things:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. They are GIA certified<\/strong> (comes with GIA diamond reports<\/strong>; one for each stone.)<\/li>\n
  2. The cut is Ideal <\/strong>(Even though GIA <\/strong>doesn’t have an “Ideal<\/strong>” grade, only an “excellent<\/strong>” grade, which I’m assuming this is).<\/li>\n
  3. The carat weight is enormous<\/strong>; 5 carats total weight.<\/li>\n
  4. The mountings are Platinum<\/strong> with screw-backs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Let’s break this down further…<\/h2>\n

    \nThey have them listed as “Ideal<\/strong>” cut, but don’t say anything about the symmetry or polish grades<\/strong>. And usually if you’re buying GIA certified diamonds, you’d want to see the diamond reports (it goes hand in hand with buying diamonds, and that’s the real reason you’re buying certified; to see the independent verification<\/strong>!)<\/p>\n

    \nThey don’t show you anything!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    They don’t say squat about fluorescence either!<\/h2>\n

    \nIf they truly had 2 stones already picked out for sale, the info would be listed<\/strong>. But the fact that they leave it so open and vague<\/strong>, and don’t give you the diamond report numbers to check online<\/a>, leaves this purchase a very mysterious <\/strong>and questionable<\/strong> buy.<\/p>\n

    \nAnd, from experience<\/strong>, if a store gives you a range of quality<\/strong>, it’s generally the lowest grade<\/strong> you’ll end up with (in this case, I1, K<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    And the price?<\/h2>\n

    \n$74,999.00?<\/strong> It seems quite high<\/strong>. That’s $37,499.50<\/strong> per stone!<\/p>\n

    So let’s compare…<\/h2>\n

    \nGoing to James Allen<\/a> (the lowest diamond prices online<\/strong>), and searching for these exact same quality<\/strong> of diamonds, brings up this:<\/p>\n

    \n\"250<\/a><\/p>\n

    \n(SI2-I2, J-K, Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds<\/a>)<\/p>\n

    Another WOW!<\/h2>\n

    \n$12,000 a piece?<\/strong> That’s $24,000 for the pair of same quality diamonds (only $51,000 less than Amazon<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    But let’s raise the stakes.<\/h2>\n

    \nLet’s give these diamond dealers the benefit of the doubt<\/strong>. Let’s say for some reason that they did give you the HIGHEST quality<\/strong> of range listed (Which puts you at SI2, J<\/strong>, with “excellent<\/strong>” in cut… And going even further, let’s also give them “excellent<\/strong>” in both polish and symmetry<\/strong>, with no<\/strong> fluorescence, too!)<\/p>\n

    This is what you’d get:<\/h2>\n

    \n(SI2, J, Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds<\/a>)<\/p>\n

    \nThat bumped the price up $8,000 to $32,000 each<\/strong> (still $43,000 less<\/strong> than Amazon).<\/p>\n

    Okay, but what about the Platinum mountings?<\/h2>\n

    \nPlatinum mountings with screw-backs would probably add another $500-$1,000<\/strong> to the price tag. But even then, it would still leave those earrings selling for $42,000 MORE!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n$74,999.00 is a ton of money<\/strong> to spend on earrings.<\/p>\n

    \nBut… If you wanted to<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

    What could you buy for that price?<\/h2>\n

    \nFor 75 grand, you could actually get a much, much higher quality of stone; VS1, G<\/strong>, with triple excellent grades in cut, polish and symmetry, and with no fluorescence.<\/p>\n

    \nThose diamonds are selling on average around $38,000 each<\/strong>… And their quality is top-notch<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    \nSo if you’re looking for huge diamond stud earrings<\/strong>, don’t buy them from Amazon (unless you want to lose 40 grand<\/strong>), head on over to James Allen<\/a> and design your own<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
