This floors me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m in shock!<\/h2>\n

\nDeBeers, the largest diamond mining company in the world, is going to start selling synthetic diamonds?<\/strong><\/p>\n

WHAT?<\/h2>\n

\nI don’t get it<\/strong>. It goes against everything DeBeers has stood for in their entire existence (1888<\/strong>). <\/p>\n

\nThey promote “REAL<\/strong>” over “FAKE<\/strong>” everyday of the week. They run campaigns like “A Diamond is Forever<\/strong>“, and “Real is Rare<\/strong>“. <\/p>\n

\n\"DeBeers<\/p>\n

\nBut now they’ve gone and produced their own synthetic<\/strong> (man-made in a laboratory) diamonds called “Lightbox<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

\n\"DeBeers<\/p>\n

\nSure they’ll be about 10 times cheaper<\/strong> than genuine diamonds, but still…<\/p>\n

\nTheir whole company is based upon digging diamonds<\/strong> out of the earth and promoting them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So what gives?<\/h2>\n

\nDeBeers says that they created these stones because of consumer demand<\/strong> (WHAT?<\/em>)… I’ve never once in 30 years ever had a customer come into the jewelry store and ask for a synthetic diamond<\/strong>. EVER!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSynthetic diamonds are created in a lab and grown just like real diamonds in nature (using intense pressure and heat<\/strong>). Their DNA <\/strong>is identical <\/strong>to a genuine diamond, and without the proper tools (diamond testers<\/a>), it would pass as a real stone (which is why Lightbox diamonds will all be etched with a Lightbox logo<\/strong> to tell them apart and identify them easier).<\/p>\n

Synthetic or fake diamonds are not uncommon.<\/h2>\n

\nThe most popular created stone is Moissanite<\/strong>, which Helzberg is selling here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd of course, the most popular “fake” diamond is Cubic Zirconia (CZ)<\/strong>. All those are all made to look similar<\/strong>, resemble a diamond…<\/p>\n

\nWhereas Lightbox is physically a real diamond<\/strong>, just created like a test-tube baby<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But if it’s not “Natural”, is it really “Real”?<\/h2>\n

\nNo matter how you look at it, it’s sure to make an impact on the industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Will it confuse people?<\/h2>\n

\nWill it hurt their business <\/strong>or reputation?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

I’d think so!<\/h2>\n

\nEven if they spend millions on promoting them (and they will be the only ones selling them), I still think it’s silly and senseless<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And the prices…<\/h2>\n

\n$800 per carat?<\/strong> It’s insane! A normal diamond runs around $8,000 a carat<\/strong> (depending on quality). <\/p>\n

\nBut starting in September (2018<\/strong>), Lightbox diamonds will hit the shelves in colors of white, pink and blue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\"Debeers<\/p>\n

\nWould you buy a man-made diamond that wouldn’t last forever?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIt seems like an odd way of saying it, but that’s exactly what DeBeers is quoted as saying:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lightbox will transform the lab-grown diamond sector by offering consumers a lab-grown product they have told us they want but aren’t getting: affordable fashion jewelry that may not be forever, but is perfect for right now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

DeBeers is also quoted as saying:<\/h2>\n

De Beers’ focus is on natural diamonds. We would not do anything that would cannibalize that industry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n(Simon Lawson, head of research and development<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

So which is it?<\/h2>\n

\nI believe they created them to just drive the price of man-made diamonds down<\/strong>. This would widen the gap between genuine diamonds and synthetic even more (right now synthetics sell for about 50-60% the price<\/strong> of genuine diamonds). Making them cheaper would keep the prices of real diamonds justified<\/strong> and strong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But will they catch on?<\/h2>\n

\nWill customers buy them and not buy real diamonds?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or will they fail?<\/h2>\n

\nOnly time will tell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nPersonally I’ll just stick to the diamonds that nature creates<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n\"Genuine<\/a><\/p>\n

Because diamonds should be forever<\/strong>, and if I spend good money on one, I’d certainly like it to last forever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt sounds better than saying “Here Honey, I bought you a diamond knock-off instead!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n
