\nMany people have ultrasonic jewelry cleaners<\/a> in their homes already, but most don’t invest in jeweler’s polishing cloths<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And that’s a shame!<\/h2>\n

\nPolishing cloths help remove fingerprints, oils, tarnish, dirt, scratches and dullness from different metals such as silver, gold, steel, platinum, brass and copper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSome cloths, like selvyt<\/a> are great for a light shine, a quick buff, and making your gems sparkle<\/strong>. You really would be amazed at how much better your gold and diamonds will look with a 30 second polish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s quick to do and it’s pretty inexpensive<\/strong> as well! :)<\/p>\n

\nOther cloths like Hagerty<\/a>, are treated or combined with a second layer that has rouge in the cloth. Rouge is a jeweler’s compound<\/strong> used to buff out scratches, dings, dents and nicks in the metal.<\/p>\n

\nYou no longer have to take your jewelry into the jewelry store to make them shine like new again. Just grab a cloth and buff and polish the surface up<\/strong>. You will love how easy it is and how it makes them look and feel.<\/p>\n

\nMicrofiber cloths<\/a> are wonderful for removing prints off watch crystals<\/strong> and making your gemstones glisten.<\/p>\n

\nCombine these with some liquid cleaner<\/a> to remove tarnish<\/strong> and even dirt from underneath your diamonds and gems and they’ll look just as good as the day you bought them.<\/p>\n

\nJewelers use selvyt cloths<\/a> and Hagerty cloths<\/a> in the stores every day. We polish and shine the jewelry up in between customers<\/strong>. We don’t want to be showing off a ring with a big ole fingerprint on the stone. No way!<\/strong><\/p>\n

What’s the best way to use a polishing cloth?<\/h2>\n

\nThe best way to use both regular polishing cloths, and cloths treated with polishing rouge are…<\/p>\n

Polishing cloths:<\/h2>\n

  1. Clean your hands first!<\/strong> It makes it very difficult to clean prints off your rings if you’re touching them with oily, dirty hands.<\/li>\n
  2. Make sure the cloth is clean.<\/strong> If you have dried dirt or debris on the cloth, you’ll push this grit into the metal, and probably leave deep scratch marks across the surface. Clean your cloth, or use a section of the cloth that is clean to polish up your goods.<\/li>\n
  3. Polish in a gentle sweeping motion<\/strong>. You don’t want to push too hard, for you may add scratches into the surface. Rub gently with your thumb and wipe with slight pressure.<\/li>\n
  4. Watch out for prongs.<\/strong> You don’t want to get the cloth caught on your prongs or head. Rub gently around <\/strong>these. The main areas to wipe are the band (shank – where it gets scratched up the most), large surfaces of metal, and the tops of the stones<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Polishing cloths with rouge:<\/h2>\n

    \nUsing polishing cloths with rouge<\/a> is a 2-step process<\/strong>. The first thing you’ll want to do is to use the rouge layer (usually the inner or second cloth) that contains the jeweler’s compound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nGently rub this compound into any surface scratches or dings you may have. If the dings or dents are too deep, you’ll need to take your ring into a jeweler for a professional filing and polishing<\/strong>. But for mild scratches, marks and normal wear and tear, a polishing cloth with rouge works best.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nRub and buff the scratches until they are gone or faint (you don’t want to take off too much of the metal, so be cautious<\/strong>). Then switch cloths and wipe with the untreated cloth (usually the outside layer) to remove the rouge and shine the piece up.<\/p>\n

    \nSometimes rouge (which turns dark and black<\/strong>) builds up beneath the diamonds, gemstones and mounting. You may then have to put your ring or item in an ultrasonic cleaner<\/a> or a jewelry steam cleaner<\/a> to fully Remove this Compound… If not, it may rub off on your skin or clothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nRouge really can make your jewelry look like new again. I highly advise using it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Cleaning chains and bracelets:<\/h2>\n

    \nThe trick to cleaning chains and bracelets is to fold the rouge cloth over the chain near one end, and gently pull the chain through the cloth<\/strong> as you apply some slight pressure. Run the chain through the cloth 3 or 4 times to add a nice, bright, shiny surface to the metal. Just be careful you don’t get it caught or snagged on the chain. And don’t pull too hard, for you don’t want to stretch your chain<\/strong> in the process.<\/p>\n
