Misleading. And can easily be <strong>overlooked<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nEven <strong>huge nationwide jewelers<\/strong> sell solitaires and loose diamonds without listing the actual cut. Or if they do, <strong>they don&#8217;t list it properly<\/strong>. They know they look for <strong>cut, color, clarity and carat weight<\/strong>. The 4C&#8217;s have been implanted into people&#8217;s minds for 100 years&#8230; So customers look for &#8220;cut&#8221;, <strong>see something in the cut category<\/strong>, and are perfectly fine with that. <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>&#8220;It has a cut. That&#8217;s good, right?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Some of these stores don&#8217;t even list cut at all:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Cut-Is-Not-Even-Listed.jpg\" alt=\"Diamond cut is not even listed\" title=\"Diamond cut is not even listed\" width=\"640\" height=\"450\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Cut-Is-Not-Even-Listed.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Cut-Is-Not-Even-Listed-100x70.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Cut-Is-Not-Even-Listed-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><br \/>\nThey don&#8217;t list cut, nor mention it in the least (<strong>unless you bring it up to them<\/strong>, and then they&#8217;ll say something about diamonds being cut too narrow or too deep losing light&#8230; but not really telling you <strong>what the cut of the diamond really is<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><h2>Out of sight, out of mind???<\/h2>\n<p>\nTo the <strong>average Joe<\/strong> (who knows little about diamonds or quality), <strong>cut is shape<\/strong>, or the <strong>cutting style<\/strong>, or just <strong>the name<\/strong> itself&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><h2>&#8220;The cut is round!&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>\n&#8220;<strong>The cut is brilliant.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;<strong>The cut is full.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>\n<h2>Isn&#8217;t that enough?<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>NO! Not by a long shot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhen we&#8217;re talking about &#8220;<strong>cut<\/strong>&#8220;, we&#8217;re actually talking about a &#8220;<strong>cut grade<\/strong>&#8220;. One of those is what you want to see under the &#8220;cut&#8221; category. And if you don&#8217;t see one of those 5 grades, then do yourself a favor; <strong>shop elsewhere!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nBecause cut is <strong>way more important<\/strong> then color or clarity.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Cut is what makes a diamond sparkle.<\/h2>\n<p>\nCut is how light interacts, bounces across the stone, and comes back out in <strong>a dazzling display of brilliance<\/strong>, fire, shine and scintillation:<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Brilliance-And-Fire.jpg\" alt=\"Diamond Brilliance and Fire\" title=\"Diamond Brilliance and Fire\" width=\"640\" height=\"375\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Brilliance-And-Fire.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Brilliance-And-Fire-100x59.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Diamond-Brilliance-And-Fire-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nAnd the best cut grade to buy is <strong>excellent <\/strong>(what I always recommend).<\/p>\n<p>\nBut, if you truly want to get <strong>the best cut of all<\/strong>, look at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesallen.com\/loose-diamonds\/round-cut\/?Color=G,F,E,D&#038;Cut=Ideal,TrueHearts&#038;Clarity=SI1,VS2,VS1,VVS2,VVS1,IF,FL&#038;Polish=EX&#038;Symmetry=EX&#038;Lab=GIA&#038;Flour=None?a_aid=JSDG\">triple excellent diamonds<\/a> (usually called &#8220;<strong>ideal<\/strong>&#8221; in the industry).<\/p>\n<p>\nThis is where a diamond has &#8220;<strong>excellent<\/strong>&#8221; grades in 3 categories: <strong>cut, polish, and symmetry<\/strong>. As shown here:<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Triple-Excellent-Cut-Diamond-Grades.jpg\" alt=\"Triple excellent cut diamonds\" title=\"Triple excellent cut diamonds\" width=\"640\" height=\"525\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Triple-Excellent-Cut-Diamond-Grades.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Triple-Excellent-Cut-Diamond-Grades-100x82.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Triple-Excellent-Cut-Diamond-Grades-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Why not list them?<\/h2>\n<p>\nIf you ask me why any jeweler would sell a diamond <strong>without a real cut grade<\/strong>, then there are multiple reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The diamond is not certified<\/strong> (certification costs money, and smaller carat weights, or lower quality stones generally don&#8217;t get certified).<\/li>\n<li><strong>To keep the cost down<\/strong> (if it&#8217;s not certified, the diamond will be <strong>cheaper by hundreds of dollars<\/strong>, giving them the competitive edge).<\/li>\n<li><strong>They don&#8217;t know it<\/strong> (if a diamond was not certified when the jeweler bought it, or if they don&#8217;t have <strong>the right equipment<\/strong> to test and examine it, then an actual grade will be unknown).<\/li>\n<li>They want to be able to sell <strong>whatever cut grade they have in stock<\/strong> at the time of purchase. Meaning, if you buy a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesallen.com\/loose-diamonds\/round-cut\/?Color=G&#038;Cut=Ideal,TrueHearts&#038;Clarity=VS2&#038;Polish=EX&#038;Symmetry=EX&#038;Lab=GIA&#038;Flour=None?a_aid=JSDG\">VS2, G<\/a>, they could have 4 of them of all different cuts in inventory. And since they don&#8217;t list cut, they don&#8217;t have to worry about <strong>which diamond they grab<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a non-issue. They grab whatever they can, <strong>whether it be good or bad<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n<strong>Misleading or vague<\/strong>, it really doesn&#8217;t matter. And the only way to keep from buying a diamond that&#8217;s <strong>dark, dull, and lifeless<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>But there&#8217;s 1 more reason why &#8220;cut&#8221; is not listed:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>It&#8217;s a fancy cut diamond.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nHold onto your hats&#8230; <strong>It&#8217;s about to get even more confusing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>For only round diamonds get a GIA cut grade!<\/h2>\n<p>\nAll the other cuts of diamond do <strong>NOT<\/strong>. <strong>Princess <\/strong>cuts, <strong>cushions <\/strong>cuts, <strong>hearts<\/strong>, <strong>pears<\/strong>, <strong>ovals<\/strong>, <strong>radiants<\/strong>, <strong>emerald <\/strong>cuts, and any other fancy cuts;<\/p>\n<p><h2>DO NOT GET A CUT GRADE!<\/h2>\n<p>\nThis is because fancy shapes and sizes can be cut in any style, shape, width or length desired (whatever fits from the parent rock during the cutting process, <strong>nothing is wasted<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\nSome stones end up long and skinny, some deep and chunky&#8230; they all face up differently. Setting <strong>a standardized cut grade<\/strong> for them is <strong>impossible<\/strong>. They aren&#8217;t symmetrical. They can&#8217;t be analyzed like a round diamond. <strong>There&#8217;s thousands of possibilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo if you venture into fancy cuts, <strong>the question still remains;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>How do you know if you&#8217;re getting a good cut?<\/h2>\n<p>\nWell, there are a couple of ways to tell:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the <strong>polish and symmetry grades<\/strong> as clues and indicators to the rest of the stone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>View the diamond for sparkle<\/strong>, see how it faces up, see if it appears dark or lifeless.<\/li>\n<li>Check out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesallen.com\/loose-diamonds\/round-cut\/?a_aid=JSDG\">James Allen&#8217;s website<\/a>.
