\nHow often should you clean your jewelry?<\/p>\n

\nHow often should you wait?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWell, to be honest, there is no time frame<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nYou can literally clean your diamonds and gemstones daily<\/strong> if you felt like it.<\/p>\n

\nDiamonds are the hardest natural substance<\/strong> on earth, so no amount of scrubbing, rubbing, wiping, brushing, will harm the stones in the least. That’s the awesome thing about diamonds. They are ultra-durable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

They last forever.<\/h2>\n

\nWhich also means, that a good cleaning will make them look brand new again<\/strong>. So they’re always crystal clear and sparkling like the day you bought them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nGemstones are pretty much the same way. You can gently scrub them<\/strong> (most use a soft toothbrush<\/strong>), and they’ll be good to go.<\/p>\n

\nThe only real issue<\/strong> is if you put gemstones in an ultrasonic cleaner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some gemstones can’t be cleaned:<\/h2>\n

\nSome gems are more brittle<\/strong>, porous, and softer<\/strong>, they shouldn’t be subjected to harsh chemicals, heat, or vibrations (ultrasonic sound waves). Gemstones like emeralds <\/strong>(which most have been oiled), opals <\/strong>(they can dry out and crack), pearls <\/strong>(they absorb the liquids, expand and become brittle), colored diamonds<\/strong> (they can fade and lose their vibrant hues).<\/p>\n

\nThere are many other gems that shouldn’t be put in the ultrasonic cleaner<\/strong> (see the full list here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nCleaning these gems by hand<\/strong> with mild soap and water is totally fine<\/strong>. You won’t have to worry about them…<\/p>\n

So how often should you clean your jewelry?<\/h2>\n

\nI’d suggest once a week<\/strong>. That’s usually enough to keep them sparkling and brilliant, for nothing beats a clean diamond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nNow, as for the metals themselves, you won’t have issues with gold in the cleaner<\/strong>, or by hand (just don’t use any bleach<\/strong>). Silver and other metals, like titanium and tungsten, should probably be cleaned by hand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Polishing by hand:<\/h2>\n

\nGet yourself a polishing cloth<\/a> and carefully wipe the mounting to remove surface scratches<\/strong> (be gentler on white gold, you don’t want to rub away the rhodium plating). Also be cautious of the prongs and channel walls<\/strong>. Polishing them, or rubbing them too hard could cause them to snag<\/strong>, lift, pull<\/strong>, break, and wear down<\/strong>. So work softly around the mounting (you don’t want to loosen your stones<\/strong> either).<\/p>\n

How about a professional polishing?<\/h2>\n

\nJewelry stores use polishing wheels<\/strong> to buff your items like new. But this can also wear away a thin layer of gold<\/strong>, so it’s wise to only have it done a few times a year<\/strong>, just in case.<\/p>\n

Where to clean?<\/h2>\n

\nWhen you clean your jewelry, try to get into the #1 dirty spot:<\/strong> underneath the diamonds and gemstones. Dirt gets trapped under the stones and clings to the underside<\/strong> (the pavilion), where it dries, hardens and builds up like cement<\/strong>. This also darkens <\/strong>your stones, makes them dull, and makes them look horribly lifeless<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo get a tiny brush<\/strong> and dab underneath them to make their bottoms sparkle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nClean your jewelry and diamonds good (I throw my diamond earring in the cleaner once a week<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nClean them often<\/strong> (jewelry gets dirty really fast from lotions<\/strong>, perfumes, soaps<\/strong>, oils).<\/p>\n

Get yourself some cleaning supplies:<\/h2>\n

\nBuy an ultrasonic cleaner<\/a>, polishing cloth<\/a>, dazzle stik<\/a>, or jewelry cleaning solution<\/a>…<\/p>\n
