This is a talent that you probably didn’t know existed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Pearl Stringing.<\/h2>\n

\nIt’s not only a hobby for some, but a career<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThis is because stringing pearls is usually not done at the jewelry store<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThese types of repairs are sent out to a pearl stringer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Example:<\/h2>\n

\nSay a customer brings in their pearl necklace that’s broken, or a bracelet where the cord is yellow, dirty<\/strong>, stretching (ready to break), leaving gaps between the pearls<\/strong>, like the top strand, versus the new bottom strand below:<\/p>\n

\nThese pearls need to be restrung<\/strong>. Jewelers will contact a local pearl stringer to fix the bracelets or necklaces<\/strong> (other repairs, like gluing pearls, fixing rings, making earrings, can mostly be done by their own goldsmith).<\/p>\n

\nThe stringers will take apart the entire strand (keeping track of where the beads go<\/strong> in a bead board<\/a>). Then they will clean all the pearls<\/strong> (and any charms or spacers used), and begin the tedious process of restringing them onto a new pearl string<\/a> (tons of different cord exists), knotting them individually<\/strong> if needed, then reattaching the clasp and jump rings. Once completed, this gets sent back to the jewelry store with an invoice<\/strong> (stringers are considered an independent contractor<\/strong> or freelancer<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nMost of the time jewelers will double the cost<\/strong> for the customer (if it cost them $1 an inch, they’ll charge $2). Plus, there is usually a minimum charge<\/strong> as well, many times around $35. This is to cover overhead and labor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nMany times pearl stringers will also supply the findings<\/strong> to fix things as well, like clasps<\/strong>, 0-rings, spacers<\/strong>, extra pearls (in case the strand isn’t long enough, or some were lost or broken), things like that (these can also be ordered by the jeweler<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

It’s a tricky business:<\/h2>\n

\nStringers will need to learn from experience how to string a strand<\/strong>. They can’t make the pearls too tight<\/strong>, nor too loose<\/strong>. The strand will generally stretch a little from wear and tear. So there’s a definite learning curve<\/strong> to applying the proper tension.<\/p>\n

\nThis is not only something you can learn, but something you can teach yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAs well as stringing kits and supplies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThese helpful tools<\/strong> will show you all you need to know to learn this fun pastime<\/strong>. I would advise buying a kit<\/a> and a pearl stringing book<\/a>, just to get things started<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nYou’ll learn all the different designs<\/strong>, styles, and techniques <\/strong>used for most of the strands (and double strands) in showcases today.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s therapeutic<\/strong>, relaxing<\/strong>, and it can make you a few extra bucks<\/strong> in your spare time (while you’re watching tv<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
