You probably know by now that the round brilliant cut diamond<\/strong> is the most expensive cut<\/strong> of diamond there is.<\/p>\n

\nThis is simply because of demand<\/strong>; most people want one.<\/p>\n

\nAnd, so it goes, that all of the other shapes (called fancy shapes<\/strong>) are less, and some by 50%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nPlus the carat weight also matters. For the jump between a 1\/4<\/strong> and a 1\/2<\/strong> carat is about double<\/strong>… But the jump between 1\/2<\/strong> and a full carat (1.00<\/strong>) can be triple or quadruple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThere are tons of factors<\/strong> that go into the price of each diamond; shape<\/strong>, cut, color<\/strong>, clarity, carat weight<\/strong>, polish, fluorescence<\/strong>, symmetry, visual aspect<\/strong>, certification, cost<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

So comparing shape and price is not easy.<\/h2>\n

\nThe only way to do so is to compare exact same quality of stones<\/strong>. i.e. the same color, clarity, carat weight…<\/p>\n

\nPlus, it also depends on what diamonds are in stock<\/strong> at any given time. You may not find exact qualities in every single shape (as seen below<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nAnd every day the prices of these diamonds fluctuate. Some get sold, some added (meaning the same quality stones will have different costs<\/strong>), they change quickly, their rankings shift up and down. It becomes almost impossible to justify<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But we’ll try.<\/h2>\n

\nBelow are diamonds of the same carat weight<\/strong>; 1.00-1.05, the exact same clarity; SI1<\/strong>, the same color; E<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

But here is where things get tricky:<\/h2>\n

\nYou can’t compare the same cut<\/strong>. Only round brilliant cut diamonds get an actual cut grade by GIA<\/strong>. All the other fancy shapes get none<\/strong>. So you can’t compare cut to cut… What you can compare is polish<\/strong>, symmetry<\/strong>, and fluorescence <\/strong>(which I’ve done).<\/p>\n

That’s the best we can do…<\/h2>\n

\nAlso note, this is comparing SI1, E, 1 Carats<\/strong> (and the lowest prices are shown below). But if we opened up the search, searched for VS, E<\/strong>, or .95<\/strong>, or Very Good polish<\/strong>, things would change drastically. You’d see some stones are cheaper (even of better quality), and others are more expensive. Cost plays a huge role<\/strong>… So the purpose of this comparison is to see how shapes affect price today<\/strong>. Right now. How they rank.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which shapes are priced higher?<\/h2>\n

\nLet’s find out<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nFrom the most expensive diamond shape<\/strong> (at the time of this post), these are the shapes and prices from top to bottom (all diamonds shown from James Allen<\/a>):<\/p>\n

Note that some cuts only had a few diamonds in stock<\/strong>; Asscher, Heart… and Marquise cut had NONE<\/a>. Today may be three<\/strong>, tomorrow there could be a dozen<\/strong>. Or one<\/strong>. The prices move with the market and Emerald cuts could be 2nd in line<\/strong>. You just don’t know until the day comes that you need to buy a diamond.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s all based upon availability <\/strong>and demand <\/strong>(and even location<\/strong>; where you buy it. What’s hot<\/strong> and what’s in trend could change prices as well). The exact quality helps narrow it down, but some qualities are more popular (like SI1, E<\/a>, or VS2, G<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nSo no matter how you look at it. No matter the comparison or industry or store, one thing is for sure<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
