\nWhen it comes to diamonds, size obviously matters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut what most people don’t realize is how size affects every single aspect<\/strong> of a diamond. Some good<\/strong>, some bad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo let’s start off with the good<\/strong> first…<\/p>\n

1) It’s BIG!<\/h2>\n

\nYou can’t deny that the sight of a large diamond is breathtaking<\/strong>. I mean, a really huge diamond can drop your jaw<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThe dream carat weight is 1.00<\/strong> (the average size is .38<\/strong>), but when you get into 1.50, 2.00, and 3.00, you really see people’s eyes light up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nEveryone wants one.<\/p>\n

\nBig diamonds rock!<\/strong><\/p>\n

2) More sparkle, more brilliance<\/h2>\n

\nOf course, with larger diamonds comes a larger viewing area<\/strong>. This also creates more brilliance and sparkle<\/strong>. Bigger flashes of both white light and colored light. It’s the life<\/strong> of a diamond, and the bigger the stone, the bigger the impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nPlus, a perfectly cut diamond<\/strong> (like True Hearts<\/a> or Astor cut diamonds<\/a>), are stunning with all their larger hearts and arrows:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThese diamonds will knock your socks off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3) Inscriptions are easier to read<\/h2>\n

\nBig diamonds are usually laser inscribed<\/strong> (most diamonds over 1.00 carat are), and with bigger diamonds, come bigger girdles, and easier to see inscriptions<\/strong>. Just grab a microscope<\/a> or a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a> and you’ll be able to read them with ease<\/strong> (which is also the best way to prevent diamond switching<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nSo, these are the best reasons to go large<\/strong>, other than bragging rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut there are a lot of downsides <\/strong>too. More than most people realize.<\/p>\n

\nLet’s take a look at them:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) The price<\/h2>\n

\nBig diamonds demand a big price<\/strong> (they are much rare in larger sizes). Price can double, triple, or even quadruple the cost easily. And when you get into massive diamonds like 4.00 carats and 5.00 carats<\/a>, it’s practically the price of a sports car, house, or boat<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

2) Color is more apparent<\/h2>\n

\nThat’s right. When diamonds get bigger, so does the color<\/strong>. It intensifies<\/strong>… like doubling a tinted piece of glass. The color gets easier to see and appears more darker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nCompare the two diamonds below of different carat weights<\/strong>, see how the bigger diamond has more visible color?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSo with a bigger diamond, you probably will want a better color<\/strong>, as well. <\/p>\n

3) Clarity is more obvious<\/h2>\n

\nWhen the diamond gets large, so do the inclusions<\/strong>. The flaws in a smaller diamond may be harder to see<\/strong> (which is awesome), but these same flaws in a larger diamond tend to stand out and get noticed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd if you compared even a smaller diamond, like .25 or .33<\/strong>, you probably wouldn’t see any flaws at all. Size matters!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWith big stones, you’ll probably want to stick in the SI1 clarity range or higher<\/strong>. Otherwise, you may be seeing imperfections for the rest of your life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4) Cut stands out more<\/h2>\n

\nBigger stones also show off a poor cut better (really worse<\/strong>). The diamond will appear darker, it will have less sparkle<\/strong>, everything tends to magnify. Compare the cut below, same cut, different sizes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBigger stones can not only look darker<\/strong>, show off weird attributes like nail heads<\/strong> and fish-eyes<\/strong> (dark areas inside the stone due to a bad make<\/strong>), but you’ll also see the facets better. See if they are misaligned<\/strong>, see if the culet is larger, see if the girdle is huge or uneven<\/strong>. Cut, proportions and faceting become much more apparent and glaring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo with bigger diamonds, you should pay attention to cut<\/strong>. Many larger diamonds will be cut deep (lumpy<\/strong>), where most of the weight is in the base of the stone or the crown (this also can make the diamond look smaller<\/strong> than it really is).<\/p>\n

\nI generally advise purchasing a diamond with an “excellent<\/strong>” or “very good<\/strong>” cut grades<\/strong>, so you avoid most poor cut features. Better cut diamonds not only face up better<\/strong>, but add a lot of bling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5) 36% GLOW<\/h2>\n

\nMany, many big diamonds can also glow in the dark<\/strong>. It’s called fluorescence and is more visible<\/strong> in larger stones. It can make a great diamond often appear foggy or hazy<\/strong> inside.<\/p>\n

\nWhen you buy a diamond, always check the fluorescence grade<\/strong> on the diamond report. I advise “none<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

\nBut fluorescence does affect price greatly<\/strong> (sometimes by 25%<\/strong>), so comparing the same quality and size of stone could get confusing until you look at the grade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n36% of diamonds<\/strong> have fluorescence (which is a natural phenomenon<\/strong> in diamonds)…<\/p>\n

\n\"Amount<\/a><\/p>\n

\n(Diamond counts came from instock inventory<\/strong> at James Allen<\/a> at the time of this post<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

\nFluorescence is something you should see to understand<\/strong>. Some fluorescent diamonds look weird<\/strong>, others don’t. You won’t know until you view them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nWith size comes great responsibility… Just kidding, it’s price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
