\nFor all you really need to know is the basics about diamonds<\/strong>. That way you can buy a great looking diamond<\/strong>, and not get ripped off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSure you could study for hours, you could scrutinize every dot, detail, facet and color, but why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nFor if you can learn enough in just 60 seconds<\/strong>, then you can save yourself time and money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And that’s just shopping smart.<\/h2>\n

\nSo here we go…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nQuick<\/strong>, efficient<\/strong>, and FUN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1) Diamond Color:<\/h2>\n

\nColor is the easiest to judge;<\/strong> the diamond is either white <\/strong>or yellow <\/strong>(most people prefer white). White colors are D, E, F<\/strong> (pure white), and G, H<\/strong> (fine white). Choose one of them and your diamond will face up fine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2) Diamond Clarity:<\/h2>\n

\nYou can either see inclusions<\/strong> (which are flaws, black spots<\/strong>, dots, clouds, lines, cracks) in your stone, or you can’t<\/strong>. Generally included diamonds (I1, I2, I3) have easy to see imperfections. Any diamond higher than that (SI or higher<\/strong>) will have invisible flaws (only seen under 10x magnification<\/strong>). Those are the best grades to get. SI1 is the most popular clarity on Earth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3) Diamond Carat Weight:<\/h2>\n

\nThe average weight for a diamond ring is just .33 carats<\/strong> (1\/3 carat). The “dream<\/strong>” carat weight is 1.00 carat<\/strong>. I would suggest buying a carat weight that suits your budget<\/strong>. 3\/4 (.75 carats) or larger looks big on the finger.<\/p>\n

4) Diamond Cut:<\/h2>\n

\nEASY!<\/strong> Go with “excellent<\/strong>” grades in cut <\/strong>(as well as polish <\/strong>and symmetry<\/strong>) to achieve a diamond that sparkles like crazy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5) Certification:<\/h2>\n

\nBuy only GIA certified loose diamonds<\/strong> (AGS a close second). Skip everything else (EGL, IGI<\/strong>…)<\/p>\n

6) Fluorescence:<\/h2>\n

\nNOPE! <\/strong>Make sure the diamond report says “none<\/strong>” under the fluorescence grade. Otherwise your stone could look odd, hazy or cloudy in natural light (regardless of the quality you choose).<\/p>\n

7) Buy Shy:<\/h2>\n

\nIf you buy a little less<\/strong> (1-7 points less) than the industry standards<\/strong> (which are 1\/4, 1\/3, 1\/2, 3\/4, 1), then you’ll save hundreds of dollars<\/strong> and still get a stone that visually appears the same<\/strong> size.<\/p>\n

8) Break the Weight up:<\/h2>\n

\nIf you want a 1 carat diamond, break the weight up<\/strong> so that it totals 1 carat total weight. Meaning, don’t buy 1 stone<\/strong>, buy many<\/strong>. Go with a smaller center, that when combined with the mounting, still equals 1 carat<\/strong> (or whatever carat weight you desire).<\/p>\n

9) Think Fancy:<\/h2>\n

\nFancy cuts are every shape of diamond<\/strong> other than the round brilliant cut. And they are all cheaper!<\/strong> Pick up a princess, pear, radiant, cushion, emerald… and you will no doubt save yourself big bucks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
