It’s a weird thing to say… Watches becoming extinct<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut it’s true, watches are more obsolete<\/strong> then you think.<\/p>\n

\nJust like the pocket watch<\/strong>, the common, everyday wrist watch, like the Seiko, Bulova, Citizen, are on their way out.<\/p>\n

\nSales are way down, and have been gradually declining<\/strong> in the last years. I can remember selling tons and tons of watches 20 years ago… Now, very, very few.<\/p>\n

What’s causing this decline?<\/h2>\n

\nIs it because the younger generation isn’t concerned about time<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nNo, it’s the opposite<\/strong>. It’s because of smartwatches <\/strong>and activity trackers (like the Fitbit<\/strong>). That, and the fact that this generation has time on their smartphones<\/strong>. So the need for time, is always close at hand.<\/p>\n

\nSales on chronographs and analog watches are dying, just like the batteries inside of them<\/strong>. Even solar powered watches are getting left in the dust… People used to use their watches for alarms<\/strong>, telling time in the dark<\/strong>, dual time zones, moon phases… Move over wrist watch, the smartphone has taken your place. It does all that, plus more (weather<\/strong>, compass, heartbeat<\/strong>, music…) <\/p>\n

Smart technology has taken over the world.<\/h2>\n

\nAnd I know this firsthand, because it happened to me<\/strong>. I’m a huge wrist watch collector, I own tons of different styles, brands, dressy, casual, digital… Heck, I even own some pocket watches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But then I bought a Fitbit…<\/h2>\n

\nYears ago I bought a fitness tracker<\/strong>. It worked quite well. I lost 30 pounds wearing one (see my full review here<\/a>). Once I started wearing that, I didn’t take it off<\/strong>. I loved how it counted steps, calories burned, and sleep patterns.<\/p>\n

And then last year, I bought an Apple Watch.<\/h2>\n

\nThat was in Summer. And guess what?<\/strong> I haven’t taken it off since. I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do, but honestly, I use it way more then I would have ever dreamed. It’s wonderful<\/strong>. It works perfect with my iphone, and I haven’t worn any other watch since.<\/p>\n

\nSo yes, it happened to me. The shift to the next generation. The future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So are watches becoming a thing of the past?<\/h2>\n

\nI’d say so<\/strong>. Just like everything else; 8 tracks<\/strong>, cassettes, even books<\/strong>… It’s all going digital. Downloads. Streaming… Smart!<\/strong><\/p>\n
