Some people have no idea what a 1 carat diamond costs<\/strong> (that’s 100 points of pure carbon).<\/p>\n

\nSo I’ll make it easy for you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll show you the cheapest round diamond<\/strong> I could find, versus the most expensive<\/strong> 1 carat round diamond (round because it’s the most popular shape).<\/p>\n

\nThe only thing they have in common is the size<\/strong>; they are both exactly 1.00 carats<\/strong> on the dot.<\/p>\n

Compare diamonds:<\/h2>\n

\n\"Compare<\/p>\n

\nThe visual difference<\/strong> between these two diamonds is huge. One is full of inclusions<\/strong> (black carbon spots that look like pepper), and the other is crystal clear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut the real question is;<\/strong><\/p>\n

What’s the price difference?<\/h2>\n

\nHold onto your hats… compare the prices below:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nCan you believe the difference in price?<\/strong> $1,740<\/strong> for the cheapest, and $15,660<\/strong> for the most expensive (at the time of this post). And again, that’s only for 1 carats right on the dot. If we were to check out .95 carats<\/strong>, or .98, or 1.03<\/strong>… Things would change again (and be cheaper or more expensive). But that’s why I dealt with strictly 1.00 carats<\/strong> for this example. Just to be fair…<\/p>\n

\nSo let’s dive in and see why the massive difference in price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The diamond clarity:<\/h2>\n

\nThe cheapest diamond is I1 clarity<\/strong>; I1 means that the diamond has eye-visible flaws<\/strong>, it’s imperfect (flaws you can see without the use of a microscope<\/a> or a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nThe most expensive diamond is Flawless<\/strong> (FL). There is nothing visible to the eye, even under intense magnification<\/strong>. It’s perfectly clean<\/strong>, and gets the highest clarity grade on earth.<\/p>\n

The diamond color:<\/h2>\n

\nThe cheapest diamond is H color<\/strong>. Granted, H color is actually not a bad color<\/strong> at all. H is off-white and shouldn’t face up yellow in the least.<\/p>\n

\nThe most expensive diamond is D<\/strong>. The best. D is pure-white<\/strong> (my favorite diamond color), ultra-bright, and really lightens the stone (like there’s a spot light on it).<\/p>\n

The diamond cut:<\/h2>\n

\nThe cheapest diamond isn’t even cut bad either. It’s got a very good cut<\/strong> (one of the best), and has excellent polish and symmetry. <\/p>\n

\nThe most expensive diamond has triple excellent grades<\/strong> in cut, polish, and symmetry (the highest GIA ratings you can achieve). And, if you don’t know by now, the better the cut, the more the diamond will sparkle and shine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Diamond fluorescence:<\/h2>\n

\nAs often, cheaper diamonds usually have fluorescence<\/strong>. Fluorescence can make some diamonds look bad in natural light. It can make them look foggy, hazy, or cloudy<\/strong> (not to mention glow-in-the-dark<\/strong> under UV light<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nThe cheapest diamond has faint fluorescence<\/strong>. The most expensive diamond has none.<\/p>\n

But here’s the funny thing:<\/h2>\n

\nThis “cheapest<\/strong>” diamond, as you can see, is not the worst you can buy<\/strong>. It’s just the cheapest. There are far worse looking diamonds<\/strong>… You could absolutely go 2 grades lower in clarity, and tons lower in color (like K, L, M<\/strong>…)<\/p>\n

\nAnd then, you could also find diamonds that are cut poorly<\/strong> and just look terrible….<\/p>\n

That diamond is not very pretty.<\/h2>\n

\nThe point is, there will always be cheaper, or worst looking diamonds. Just like there will always be more expensive diamonds as well. Prices fluctuate daily<\/strong>, and only apply to stones in stock<\/strong> at any given time.<\/p>\n

\nFor most people, they generally stick somewhere in the middle<\/strong>. Buying not the cheapest, but not the most expensive diamond either. Usually around $4,000 – $8,000<\/strong> is average.<\/p>\n
