Should you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nDo you really have to remove the watch battery<\/strong> in your watch? And why…<\/p>\n

\nIt really comes down to:<\/strong><\/p>\n

How long will you not wear it?<\/h2>\n

\nWatch batteries, like all batteries, will corrode<\/strong>, especially if not in use. They tend to leak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThink about your old remote controler<\/strong>… The one in the back of the drawer. When you pull it out to use it, it doesn’t work<\/strong> because the battery has leaked all over the insides. Often you can scrap the erosion away and make the remote work again<\/strong>, but sometimes it never comes back to life. This is true for anything that holds a battery; flashlights, toys, clocks<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Watches really are the same way, but worse.<\/h2>\n

\nYou see, when your watch battery corrodes, it’s literally sitting directly on top<\/strong> of the watch movement. That acid leaks all over your parts and rusts them, fuses them together<\/strong>. And many times, the watch is ruined<\/strong>, or you’ll have to replace the entire movement just to get the watch ticking again.<\/p>\n

\nIf you catch it in time, the damage might not be great<\/strong>. But if you leave it for a year, 2 years, 5… then it could be adios to your expensive wrist watch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThis is why it’s crucial to remove the battery from the watch if you’re not going to wear it for an extended period of time<\/strong> (I’d say at least 6 months).<\/p>\n

\nPop the back off the watch, find the battery, and remove it<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nGranted, you’ll probably need yourself a watch tool kit<\/a> to be able to open and unscrew everything, but it’s way cheaper than buying a new watch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nYou can also take your watch into a jewelry store and ask them to remove the battery<\/strong>. Just make sure you get the battery back, so you know which battery it was that fit inside your watch (they make hundreds of different sizes). Put the battery in a ziplock bag<\/strong>, and mark on it which watch it went to. That way, it’s easy to put it back in, or buy a replacement battery<\/strong> when that one dies.<\/p>\n

It’s a simple thing that most people don’t think about.<\/h2>\n

\nPeople only think about it when they want to wear their watch again, and it’s not working, so they bring it in to get a new cell… Only to find out, their old one corroded<\/strong> the entire guts of the watch. Ouch! Hard lesson to learn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo if you’re not wearing it, store it. Save your watch, and the movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
