In the old days, everyone proposed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThe man bought the ring secretly<\/strong> and got down on one knee to propose.<\/p>\n

\nThat was the standard and the wonderful shock and surprise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But is that still the goal today?<\/h2>\n

\nMaybe, but times are definitely changing.<\/p>\n

\nIf the man is proposing, he must not be doing it with “the ring”<\/strong>, or he\u2019s doing it after <\/strong>they buy the ring. Because statistics show the real story.<\/p>\n

\n75% of engagement rings sold today<\/strong> are sold to a couple in love. She is there to help pick out her dream ring<\/strong>. Only about 25% of the time does he shop by himself planning the \u201cWill you marry me?\u201d<\/strong> day.<\/p>\n

\nThis shows many things to me: it\u2019s not just the man\u2019s decision to ask for marriage<\/strong>. Couples are doing it as a joint effort. Maybe it\u2019s because he doesn\u2019t want to be rejected<\/strong>, or maybe it\u2019s because women are not so old-fashioned<\/strong> anymore (a.k.a. stay-at-home wives).<\/p>\n

\nIt\u2019s more modern to plan their lives together, and to pick out the ring that she really wants.<\/p>\n

\nGranted, I believe that she will help pick it out, and then he will still surprise her down the road<\/strong> on one knee at a time and place of his picking. That\u2019s the best case scenario.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s now mostly a couples thing.<\/h2>\n

\nI see it every day, every week and year. It\u2019s not just an anxious, overwhelmed man trying to decide upon a round diamond or a princess diamond.<\/p>\n

So times really have changed.<\/h2>\n

\nIs it because women are equal nowadays, versus the Leave it to Beaver era?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nI believe so. Women want the surprise proposal, but they also want to pick out the ring they\u2019ll wear forever.<\/p>\n

\nSo my recommendation is either propose with a plastic bubble gum machine ring<\/strong>, a string, or a fun promise ring<\/a>. Or even pick out a single solitaire diamond ring<\/a>, and let her know that she can put it into the mounting of her choice later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThat way, nothing is ruined<\/strong>, nothing is lost, and tradition is saved<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd that\u2019s a big fat \u201cYES!<\/strong>\u201d in my book.<\/p>\n
